Area Teams Take to The Mats

Lena Levels Peshtigo in Non-Conference Dual

Peshtigo's low wrestling numbers and Lena's revitalized wrestling culture was on full display Friday, with Lena grabbing a 60-6 team win.

There were only two live varsity matches, with the teams splitting them. Lena got a win from state qualifier Luke Misco, who pinned Ethan Brissette in a minute and 39 seconds.

Peshtigo got six points from Kyle Rupert in a minute, 30 second pin of Franky Umentum in the 160-pound weight class.

The rest of the varsity matches were forfeits, with Lena getting six points from the forfeit wins of Sam Marquardt (138), Josh Kristof (170), Cody Dellise (182), Jackson Dahin (195), Franky DesJardlais (285), Dylan Comins (106), Jayden Belongia (113), Kevin Chang (126) and Ayden Decoursin (132).

The teams also got some exhibition matches in. Peshtigo's Reese Yunke pinned Lena/s Kevin Chang in 5:21 at 120, while Rupert pinned Nathan Younger at 170 in 5:17.

Lena's Marquardt won by tech fall over Joey Kopp at 145, Comins beat Cole Sherman by an 18-2 score. Sherman also faced Belongia, who got a 12-second pin at 113.

Misco pinned Yunke in 4:57, Chang defeated Brissette 5-2 and DeCoursin topped Kopp in a tech fall.

"Definitely a lot we can work on, but that being said, I'm happy we got the matches we did. We got time on the mat, and with this year being so crazy, that's what you're looking for," Lena coach Chad Misco said.

For a school like Lena that doesn't always have great wrestling numbers, a COVID-limited season couldn't have come at a worse time.

"It doesn't happen often in Lena," coach Misco said. "That's what kind of makes this whole situation tough with COVID that we finally have a team and we can't go to tournaments and we can't go to as many duals as we want to, but you make the best of it."

Teams can only wrestle ever seven days, which won't make things any easier for first-year Peshtigo coach Kory Weed either.

"Very tough," Weed said. "We're going to make the best of it obviously. We've got a lot of obstacles we need to overcome in order to get there, but we'll make do."

Marines Shutout by Irish in NEC Conference Opener

Marinette's start to the wrestling season Tuesday did not go as they hoped, as the Marines dropped a 74-0 team score to Wrightstown.

Wrightstown won all eight of the live matches and collected six forfeit wins.

In live matches, Kyler Verbeten (120) pinned Gavin Thiry in 5 minutes, 40 seconds, Jacob Durocher (126) pinned Cole Vargo in 2:54, Isaiah Pennenberg (160) pinned Domenic Paradiso in 3:11 and Quincy Klister (285) pinned Darik McMahon in 1:01.

Kaiden Koltz (138) beat Isaiah Walker in a 5-1 decision, Nick Alexander (145) defeated Josh Walker by an 8-2 score and Logan Koel beat Dakota Cuff by 19-3 tech fall.

Winning by forfeit for Wrightstown were Riley Verbeten (113), Kaden Verbeten (132), Ethan Vande Hey (170), Mason Rice (182), Austin Koltz (220) and Everett Koltz (106).

First year Marinette wrestling coach Matt Marotz said the biggest thing his team needs to work on is conditioning.

"We've got to work on our conditioning," he said. "It's hard with a lot of quarantines going on with our team, so when they come back, they're not conditioned and not ready for this, so we've just got to get in the practice room and condition a lot more. I think that's the main problem is a lot of people are getting tired, especially it's really hard to breathe with these masks on."

While Marinette's wrestling turnout was a bit on the low end this year, the Marines will hope to be close in some of their upcoming matches, which will all be conference duals, with no tournaments. Teams must also have seven days between matches.

"It's definitely a work in progress," Marotz said. "We've got some other matches coming up that should be a little more competitive, hopefully."

Other protocols in place for the season include extra cleaning of shoes and mats, with two mats in use each match so that one mat can be cleaned and dried while the other is in use.

Panthers Fall to Irish in Season Opener 42-22

The Oconto Falls Panthers started their season with a 42-22 loss to Freedom on Tuesday.

For Oconto Falls, Clayton Whiting pinned Derek Kleuskens in a minute and 45 seconds at the 195-pound weight class, Graeson Pankratz (113) pinned Landon Wautier in 22 seconds, Luke Trepanier (138) beat Justice Mitchell in an 11-1 major decision and Landon Budz won by forfeit at 120.

For Freedom, Brady Bock (106) beat Garrett Ginter by 4-0 decision, Carsten McHugh (132) beat Jaden Ganter 3-1, Nathan VandeHey pinned Dylan Thomson in 2:48, Tucker Brockman (152) pinned Diego Estavillo in 32 seconds, Ben Gredael (160) pinned Jeremy Caldwell in 4:35, Reece Manteuffel (170) beat Trevor Schindel by 5-0 decision and Troy Nabbefeld (182) beat Aidan Stary in a 3-2 decision.

Hunter Brockman (285) and Lucas VanGrinsven (220) won by forfeit.
