Lena Drops

Non-Conference

Match With Kewaunee

Kewaunee topped Lena in a close contest on the mats Tuesday, 42-30.

Lena started out with six points from a Nathan Younger forfeit win at 160. Kewaunee would take the next 18 points, however, with Mitchell Thompson pinning Josh Kristoff (170) in 1 minute, 1 second, Kemper Robinson pinning Cody Dellise in 1:40 and Jason Reinke pinning Jackson Dahin in 1:26.

Lena got back on board with a Frank Desjarles pin of Jacob VanGoethem in 1:33 and tied it up when Dylan Comins won by forfeit at 106.

After a Matt Wery pin of Jadyn Belongia at 120, Lena would take the lead on back-to-back pins from Luke Misco (126) over Gina Augustian in 1:59 and Kevin Chang (132) pinning Mitchell VanGoethem in 1:58.

Those would be Lena's final points, however, as Kewaunee took the final 18 points to win 42-30 as a team.

Max Severin (138) pinned Ayden Decoursin in 5:32, Jack Severin pinned Sam Marquardt at 145 in 5:50 and Logan Steinhorst pinned Franky Umentum in 1:38 to round things out at 152.

That final score won't mean much to a young Lena squad that is just trying to get reps in during a year that will limit how much live action they can get in. Lena coach Chad Misco also said that he shifted some wrestlers around to get them into matches.

"It probably cost a couple kids but I'd rather see them wrestle than take a forfeit. That was my thinking on that," he said. "We have a long ways to go, but again we're young and something like this gives us something to work on. You just take bits and pieces and go back to the drawing board."

Teams can only wrestle once a week and there will be no tournaments this season. With that in mind, the two teams took to the mat for some exhibition matches afterwards.

Kewaunee's Mitch Thompson (170) pinned Younger in 1:37, Reinke pinned Delisse in 3:15 at 195, Robinson pinned Dahin in 1:18 at 195 and Jack Severin pinned Decoursin at 138 in 1:59.

Coach Misco said that he gave Decoursin the option of whether or not to wrestle Severin, a state champion and future Wisconsin Badger, and Decoursin decided to take it on.

Max Severin beat Marquardt 10-0 at 138 as well.

Lena got three wins at 120, with Comins pinning Wery at 120, Belongia pinning Augustian in 5:20 and Luke Misco beating Mitchell VanGoethem by tech fall.
