George Vavrunek, 81, passed away on Dec. 10, 2020, at home in San Diego, Ca., surrounded by his immediate family.
Born on Oct. 18, 1939, to Joseph and Clarice (Sarah) Vavrunek of Marinette, Wis., George was the third child in a family of five siblings, including Carol Walters, Delwin Vavrunek, Sarianne Parrish and Mary Lou (Jim) Hallfrisch.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Clarice and siblings, Carol, Delwin and Sarianne.
He was the husband of Christine (Banach); father to Laura (Andy Taylor), Amy (Robert Stromberg) and Steven (Ryo) and grandfather to Andrew and Ryan.
George and Chris met in Marinette and moved to Milwaukee, Wis., in 1964. After marrying in Milwaukee in 1965 and starting their family, they returned to Menominee in 1968 where George was employed by Enstrom Helicopter Corporation for 11 years.
In 1979, George and his family moved to San Diego where he worked for General Atomics for 32 years. George and Chris enjoyed traveling and during their 55-year marriage visited many scenic parts of the United States, the Caribbean Islands and the Bahamas with vacations in France, Sweden, Egypt, Japan, Bali and Mexico.
They continued to celebrate each wedding anniversary on the Hawaiian islands of Maui, Oahu or Kauai. His greatest pleasure was spending time with family walking the beach at Torrey Pines, bike riding with his grandsons and joining barbecues and celebrations of Holidays throughout the year.
He was always willing to share a hand to family members, neighbors and friends who had car problems or household repairs that needed attention and he loved being called "Mr. Fix-it" by the neighbors. He will be sorely missed by those who enjoyed his friendship, camaraderie, his stories and his smile.
George will receive Military Honors upon interment in the Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego after the Covid-19 restrictions are lifted. In his memory, you may wish to consider a donation to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network https://www.pancan.org/
