Cougars Fall to Spartans in Season OpenerIssue Date: December 29, 2020 Cougars Can't Hold Off Spartans in Non-Conference Matchup
The COVID-19 pandemic couldn't stop one of the state's best wrestling matchups, as Coleman and Luxemburg-Casco met Tuesday to run back another edition of their inter-conference rivalry.
In this year's matchup, Luxemburg-Casco escaped with a 40-36 win after three straight wins to end the day.
With Coleman holding a 36-25 lead, Lux-Casco's Kyle Kroll (220) pinned Sawyer Seefeldt in 44 seconds and Travis LeGrave (285) pinned Spencer Karban in 1 minute, 44 seconds to give Lux-Casco the 37-36 lead. Isaac Jerabek (106) then topped Cameron Kimmell in a 9-5 decision to seal the win for his team.
Coleman got six wins from 14 matches, but they were all pins, with John Nowak (120) beating Tyler Derenne in 3 minutes, 51 seconds, Brady Gross (126) pinning Colton Falish in 1:56, Karson Casper beating Tristan Thiry in 1:08, Cole Klimek topping Ryan Routhieeaux in 2:30, Tyler Blanchard beating Collin Schroeder in 1:34 and Coby DenRuyter defeating Isaac VandenBush in 2:54.
Coleman coach Kevin Casper pointed out Nowak as the first wrestler who stood out to him on the night, though he had high praise for all of his winners.
"John Nowak had a big match for us. He wrestled very well. I thought he did a really good job," Casper said.
For the Spartans, Easton Worachek beat Raymond LeMieux 13-0 at 113, Max Ronsman (132) pinned Chance Gruber in three minutes flat, Luke Shefchik beat Will Bieber by a 9-5 score, Hunter Joniaux (152) pinned Owen Kinziger in 3:31 and Isaac Blohowiak (160) pinned Ramiro Cortez in 1:04.
It was Coleman's first wrestling matchup of the season due to "a lot of uncertainties throughout the year already," coach Casper said, adding, "Starting out with one of the premier teams in the state makes it a little more difficult, but at the same time, I'm proud of our kids. We still wrestled well."
The Cougars were also missing two varsity wrestlers and needed to "knock the rust off," by improving technique and conditioning, Casper said. He seemed confident they would do so in short order.
"And we will," he said. "That's kind of been a staple of our program. We typically start out slower and as the season goes on, we keep getting better and we will. We have nothing to hang our heads over."
Bulldogs Shutout Blue Devils In Packerland Dual
Peshtigo defeated Oconto 36-0 on the wrestling mats Tuesday, winning the only two live matchups of the day.
Peshtigo's Kody Klimek pinned Aidan Diaz at 285 in a minute and 30 seconds and Connor Thomas (195) pinned Owen Hansen in a minute and 10 seconds.
Winning by forfeit for the Bulldogs were Cole Sherman (106), Reese Yunke (120), Brendon Conn (126), and Kyle Rupert (152).
In an exhibition, Peshtigo's Kyle Rupert beat Owen Hansen by 7-4 decision.
Marinette Matmen Slip Past Lena 42-36
Marinette edged Lena 42-36 on Tuesday despite the Wildcats getting two more forfeit wins on the night.
After six matches, Lena held a 30-6 lead, with Dylan Comins (106), Luke Misco (120), and Sam Marquardt (138) winning by forfeit, Kevin Chang (126) pinning Cole Vargo and Ayden Decoursin (132) pinning Shayla Diaz.
Gavin Thiry (113) pinned Jayden Belongia for Marinette's only points in the early going. They would get on a roll in short order, however, kickstarted by Owen Suennen (145) and Jonny Bieber (152) winning by forfeit.
Josh Walker (160) pinned Nathan Younger, Domenic Paradiso (170) pinned Josh Kristoff and Dakota Cuff pinned Cody Dellise (182), and all of the sudden, Marinette had a six-point team lead with three matches to go.
Jackson Dahin won by forfeit for Lena at 195 and 220 was a double forfeit, meaning the teams were tied at 36 going into the final match, where Darik McMahon gave Marinette the win by pinning Frank Desjarles at 285.
In exhibition matches, Marinette got three wins and Lena got one.
Luke Misco moved up to 126 to beat Cole Vargo in an 18-2 tech fall for Lena, while Marinette's Isaiah Walker (145) pinned Sam Marquardt, Jonny Bieber (160) pinned Nathan Younger anad Dakota Cuff (195) pinned Jackson Dahin.
