Mary Ann Gardon

Mary Ann (Pesch) Gardon, 92, long-time editor of the Peshtigo Times, passed away Monday Feb. 1, 2021.

Born Oct. 6, 1928, the oldest daughter of the late Leo J. (L.J.) and Anna M. (Smegoski) Pesch, she graduated from Peshtigo High School as Salutatorian in 1946 and was named one of six honor students from her Senior class. She was voted by the Senior Class and Faculty for Peshtigo High School 1946 Daughters of the American Revolution award for outstanding school service, with selection based on qualities of patriotism, loyalty, leadership and service.

She chaired the 1945 prom, maintained a high scholastic average throughout her high school years and was a member of all school clubs, holding major offices in most of them. She was editor of the senior yearbook, the Peshcocan and performed in the senior class play. In 1950 she graduated from Marquette University.

She married Charles Gardon on March 31, 1951 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Peshtigo. They were married for 69 years and had 12 children. While raising her 11 children, Mary Ann edited the news stories and did bookkeeping and billing work from home, while husband Charlie handled reporting and managing editor responsibilities at the Peshtigo Times office.

Mary Ann had a life-long affiliation with the Peshtigo Times and started working at the age of nine making 10 cents per hour. At age 14, she began helping with the bookkeeping and has been a part of the family business ever since. She became Editor after her father passed away on June 2, 1981 and continued in that position until after her 90th birthday. When she semi-retired, her son Charles (Chuck) Gardon took over management and editorial responsibilities.

Under her family's leadership, the Peshtigo Times won countless award from the Wisconsin Press Association for its quality news coverage, photography, editorials and advertising. Mary Ann for many hats and pitched in to help wherever needed. She had a reputation for always being the first person to arrive at the office every morning and the last to leave in the evening. She handled the stress of press time without ever losing her calm and smiling demeanor.

Her father won Business Person of the year in 1980 and following in his footsteps, Mary Ann was nominated for the same award in 2013 by the Peshtigo Chamber of Commerce, but declined in favor of having the Peshtigo Times selected as Business of the Year instead. In her acceptance speech, Mary Ann said the family has been blessed with good and loyal employees and echoed her fathers's philosophy that most important factors in business is maintaining and preserving the public trust and protecting the Public's right to now.

Even at age 90, she was still editing news, assigning reporters to their tasks and handling much of the billing. She always took the time to chat with friends and customers who stopped in at the office.

A deeply religious woman, she was a life-long member of St. Mary's Church in Peshtigo. Mary Ann left a huge impact on those that knew her and she will be deeply missed by many.

Survivors include her husband of 69 years, Charles; 10 of their 12 children, Charles P. (Deborah) of Peshtigo, Peter (Jean) of Verona, Patrick (Terry) of West Bend, Mark (Margaret) of Green Bay, Mary (Thomas) Moule of Green Bay, Anne of Maryland, Elizabeth (Paul) Arneson of Marshfield, Kathleen (Paul) Olnes of Omaha, Nebraska, Paul (Sheryl) of Longmont, Colorado. and John (Aimee) of West Chester, Ohio; a daughter-in-law, Peggy Gardon of Peshtigo; a sister, Patricia (Ralph) Schneider of Peshtigo; 26 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren with one on the way.

In addition to her parents, Mary Ann was preceded in death by two sons, Alexander and Michael; a brother, Leo; a sister, Carol Schubart and a brother, Nicholas, who died at birth.

Visitation will be held at St. Mary Church in Peshtigo on Thursday, Feb. 11 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a Rosary Service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue at St. Mary Church on Friday, Feb. 12 from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Berth and Rosenthal Funeral Home of Peshtigo is assisting the family with arrangements.
