Regional Heart Breakers Leave Suring as Sole SurvivorIssue Date: February 17, 2021 Suring Beats NEW Lutheran For Regional Title
The Suring Eagles came up victorious in a stunner against NEW Lutheran Green Bay on Saturday with a score of 48-43. On their home court the Eagles were able to hold the Blazers scoreless for a better part of the first half of the game holding them to 10 points while amassing an eleven point lead. While resting some of the Suring players before halftime the Blazers were able to score five more points to reach a halftime score of 24-15 with the Suring Eagles ahead. The Eagles defense was spot on, holding most of the Blazer's top scorers to single digit scores. The Blazer were only able to outscore the Eagles by one point in the second half, as Suring held on for the five point win. "It was awesome our defense really came out to play. We were able to hit some clutch shots and our girls perservered", said Suring Head Coach Mitch Wolf. "Earlier in the year we had some close losses and I told them you're learning how to win. Then we hit that Coleman game and we were down and able to come back, then Lourdes were down and able to come back. Winning close games." Seniors Kylee Stelzer and Paige Krueger paced the Eagles with 15 points each. Kate Mahoney added eight including two three pointers, while senior Kelsey Smith added seven to the final tally.
Gillett Season Ends Against Crandon
The Gillett girls basketball team who have been tough all season long suffered a post season loss to the Crandon Cardinals Friday night in Gillett 54-49.
The Cardinals employed a quick scoring offense that racked up 28 points over the first half while holding the Tigers to 20 points.
Gillett did gain ground over the second half with an additional 29 points but fell behind in the long run due to 26 more points by the Cardinals.
Aubrey DeBauch took top scoring honors for the Tigers in the post season showdown with 26 points. Teammate Karissa Schaal posted 10 points while Macey Franti added nine.
Crandon was led by Mara Stamper with 14 points and Maddie Stamper with 13 points. Holly Palubicki added 12 points.
Coleman Loses One Point Heartbreaker to Laona/Wabeno
The Laona/Wabeno Rebels and the Coleman Cougar girls took the court Friday night for WIAA post season basketball action and unfortunately were handed a very close one point loss by the Rebels 38-37.
The tough loss saw the Cougars work their way to an early lead, entering the locker room with a little wiggle room 23-18.
That wiggle room quickly disappeared during the second half where the rebels fired off for 20 more points while stopping the tough Cougars at 14 points leaving the Cougars down by a single point as time expired.
Hailey Ziemer led the way for the girls in green with 13 points. Teammte Cameron Compe followed up with 11 points while Aubrey Bintz chipped in five points.
The Rebels were led by Halia Babich with 10 pints and Elizabeth Krause with 12 points.
Bulldogs Lose Double O.T. Heart Breaker to Panthers
The home stretch of the Peshtigo Bulldogs' 2020 season was marked by numerous hard-fought overtime games, so its perhaps fitting that the Bulldogs' season came to a close with a 56-55 double-overtime loss to Oconto Falls on Friday night.
It was an offensive struggle for both teams in the first half. Seven minutes in, it was just 7-5 Peshtigo.
With 8:20 on the clock in the first half, Emma Gilligan hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 10, but that would be the last field goal Peshtigo made until the first-half buzzer, as there just seemed to be a lid on the basket.
At the half, Oconto Falls led 17-15, with Tori Hutchinson making a shot at the buzzer to give the Panthers a lead.
School staff must have removed the lid on the basket in the second half, as the teams came out in the second half and scored at a higher rate.
"They really played good defense on us the first half, man-to-man especially. I think it sort of caught us off guard a little bit. That's the most turnovers we've ever had all year," Peshtigo coach Bruce Parkovich said. "But I thought the girls adjusted in the second half and played like our normal selves and I thought we did a nice job the second half."
Sydney Lund scored 16 of her 19 points in the second half and overtimes to lead Peshtigo in scoring. Oconto Falls never gave Peshtigo a lead until the Bulldogs took a lead on a Lund bucket at 38-36 with less than four minutes remaining.
With 2:40 to go, Hailey Peitersen scored to give Oconto Falls the lead back, but Lund matched it to tie the game at 40.
After baskets by Allison Dudka and Grace Wickman with the clock dwindling, it looked like Peshtigo was in pole position to advance, but Alexis Euclide scored an and-one basket with 44 seconds on the clock.
Trailing by two, Euclide made a shot with two seconds on the clock to tie the game and force overtime. She would score 20 points to lead all scorers, with all 20 coming in the second half or overtimes.
In the first overtime, Peshtigo again led, 53-51 with a minute left, after two free throws by Lund. Again, Oconto Falls scored with time in short supply, this time on a pair of free throws by Peitersen.
The lid was back on the basket in the second overtime. Oconto Falls scored with its first possession, then neither team would score until there were 57 seconds left on the clock, when the Panthers got a free throw.
Lund made a pair of free throws with 30 seconds to play, but Peshtigo fell short by a point. Oconto Falls ran the clock down and Peshtigo didn't foul until there was just 1.4 seconds on the clock.
That left just enough time for a three-quarter-court heave, which fell short.
Parkovich said noise in the gym made it difficult for the players to hear him yelling to foul.
"Even the girls on the bench said "coach, they can't hear you,' but I guess at some stage you've got to realize something's got to happen and it's just too bad it was that late we ended up fouling them," he said.
Gilligan had 11 points for Peshtigo and Dudka had nine in her final game for Peshtigo. Dudka and fellow seniors Wickman and Dreya Detry made a big impact for Peshtigo on the year, in addition to Lund's huge year.
"They really stepped up a notch this year, and it wasn't necessarily scoring, it was other things that I was proud of with rebounding, playing defense," Parkovich said of his seniors, calling them "the glue" for Peshtigo all year.
Mckayla Goebel had 13 for Oconto Falls.
Badgers Beat Back the Rangers
The Niagara Badgers got ahead early and never let off on their way to a 66-38 home court victory over the Wausaukee Rangers Friday evening.
The match up saw the Badgers post 36 points over the first half while defensively clamping down on the Rangers to stop them at 17 points.
Wausaukee picked up a little slack over the second half with their 21 points but a 30 point effort from the Badgers would be more than enough to put the game on ice.
Wausaukee was led by Rachel Schlies with 23 points while Schroeder posted six.
Niagara was led by Josie Rock with 16 points and Morgan Borcherdt with 13 points. Alyssa Cretton picked up 12 points on the night.
