Chief Joseph E. Giver

Issue Date: September 23, 2021

Chief Joseph E. Giver, 62, of Marinette Wisconsin passed away Sunday, Sept. 12, 2021 at Aurora Bay Care Medical Center  in  Green Bay.

Born Dec. 10, 1958 in Niles, Mi. to James and Jean (Ryan) Giver, he spent his early life in the Berrien County area. He attended Berrien Springs Public School, Berrien Springs Seventh-Day Adventist Church School and then Wisconsin Academy in Columbus, Wi. for 4 years, graduating from high school there in 1977.

After graduation, he met Darla Buettner of Clintonville at Wisconsin Academy while attending an alumni reunion and they married on July 14 1991. They began their new life together in New Berlin, living across from a fire station. They celebrated 30 happy years of marriage this year and she stayed by his side, supporting him as a Firefighter/ EMT/ Fire Chief throughout his career.

After graduating from Wisconsin Academy, he moved to Hinsdale, Ill. near family where he worked at Hinsdale Hospital in security. The next year he joined the Hinsdale Fire Department and took Firefighting/EMT classes, finding his calling in life for a career. Later he moved to Milwaukee where he worked for Bell and Curtis Ambulance and joined the New Berlin Fire Department, working his way up the ranks of Lieutenant. He became a crash rescue firefighter at Mitchell International Airport and worked at all three departments, 440th, 128th and the County.

He came to Marinette and served as Chief of the Marinette Fire Department and then was Chief in the Dousman and Verona Fire Departments before retiring in January of 2020.

After retiring he worked part time for Kenworth as a shuttle driver for trucks and also worked part-time as a driver for NORA nationwide organ recovery transport alliance and recently returned to Marinette for retirement where he joined the Town of Peshtigo Fire Department as a firefighter. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

He was passionate about his job and had an interest in large apparatus fire trucks, their sirens and lights. Dedicated to his Fire/EMS work, he always helped and served others as needed on a call. Although he had no children of his own, he delivered 10 babies in his career. Collecting Fire Department shoulder patches and T-shirts was his main hobby. For many years each fall he hunted in the UP of Michigan with his family, but winter was his favorite season and he loved to snowmobile. He was also a member of the Wisconsin and Michigan Model Railroad Club.

Survivors include his wife, Darla; his mother, Jean Giver; a brother, Johann (Linda); a sister, Joy; three nephews; five nieces; a great-nephew; two great-nieces and many other relatives and friends and professional colleagues in the Fire/ EMS Service in Wisconsin and the United States.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents in the Ryan and Giver families; his father, James and a brother, James, Jr. (age 4).

Visitation will be held at Hansen Onion Martell Funeral Home in Marinette on Thursday, Sept. 30 from noon until time of a Memorial Service at 4 p.m., with Fire Department honors. Pastor Tom Hubbard of the Seventh Day Adventist Church will officiate.
