Middle Inlet Seeking Deputy Clerk/TreasurerIssue Date: December 16, 2021 After struggling for nearly two weeks to keep town business on track during the absence of Clerk/Treasurer Patricia Schutte Middle Inlet Town Board voted unanimously at its regular monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9 to create a position of Deputy Clerk/Treasurer and advertise for someone to fill it.
Supervisor Chuck Stanek, who had been Clerk/Treasurer for many years until April of 2019 when the position was changed from elected to appointed, has been filling in during Schutte's illness, but said it is difficult returning after three years. Many things in the office have changed, including the computer system used by the current clerk.
At a special 10 minute meeting on Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 7, Wade and Van approved a motion officially appointing Stanek to serve in the position of Interim Clerk/Treasurer and execute all related financial and communication duties relative to the position, including authorization of his signature for financial records and documents. Stanek abstained from voting.
After discussion the board agreed the town should maintain a maximum balance of $5,000 in its checking account and transfer excess funds to the Money Market account.
Stanek, Wade and Van had gotten the town through the final stages of the budget process, including the special town budget meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 1. Stanek had submitted the proper paperwork to the Marinette County Treasurer's office so the property tax bills can go out on schedule, and made preparations for the Dec. 9 board meeting.
However, at that Dec. 9 meeting, Stanek declared, "I'm done," to Town Chair Rich Wade and Supervisor Don Van and recommended creating a backup position for the absent clerk/treasurer. Wade and Van readily supported his suggestion that as a board they should start advertising now to solicit applications for a deputy clerk/treasurer. Stanek said the person would not need to have a lot of special training to start, and suggested they could wait until a future meeting to set the hourly wage and formally create the position.
Stanek also suggested they should find someone interested in holding the deputy clerk/treasurer job for a long time, so they do not need to keep training new people over and over.
"We learned our lesson on this one," Wade declared after he, Van and Stanek all voted in favor of advertising for someone to fill the new Deputy Clerk/Treasurer position.
By unanimous vote, the board formally approved and adopted the $697,098 budget for 2022 that had been finalized at a special Electors Meeting and Town Board meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 1.
The evening for the board had begun at 6 p.m. with a workshop board session to review vouchers totaling $34,394.72 that were approved after the regular board meeting was convened.
The board also approved a list of election inspectors for 2-year terms starting on Jan. 1, 2022. They are Chief Inspector Naomi Blum, unaffiliated, and unaffiliated inspectors Richard Wenzel, Barbara Larson-Herber, Theresa DeGroff, Laurie Oestreich, Jeff Oestreich, Marion Wenzel, Ronald Wenzel, Linda Dodd and Oma Cook, all unaffiliated, and Debra Brockman and Romelle Stanek, recommended by the Republican Party.
The name of David Turkiewicz had also been on the list for approval as an unaffiliated election inspector, but he had passed away after the list was prepared.
Stanek advised the board that the $27,000 cemetery CD was coming due, and commented that their bank has the best interest rates in the county. The board agreed he should renew the CD.
Wade reminded residents that salt/sand mixture for roads and driveways is available at the containment area behind the fire station on Old Town Road 37, which is adjacent to the Town Hall. He reported all street signs in the town that had been damaged, defaced or stolen have been replaced and repaired, patching was completed on town roads as weather permitted, and Project Section 3 reconstruction base work on Wayside Road from the intersection of Wayside road and Pleasant Road heading 3,750 feet west is completed.
Wade completed his report with an announcement that all town road projects for the year had been completed under budget, and a "thank you" to the Town Board Supervisors and Clerk/Treasurer Schutte for doing a great job in 2021.
Van reported that bi-weekly garbage pickup has begun for the winter. He said there had been some complaints that garbage was not picked up, and reminded the public that if the road has not plowed GAD garbage trucks will not go down it. Wade said some sand and gravel town roads had not been plowed after the recent snow storms because the base is not frozen and plow trucks would tear up the surface. they will be plowed once the base is frozen.
Stanek reported on some improvements at the town hall, including a nice new gas stove in the kitchen, and a handicap access ramp and wrought iron railings at the back entrance. A roof leak in the kitchen has been repaired and a cupboard section damaged due to the leak has been removed. New shades are being obtained for all windows in the town hall and in the office of the building.
The cemetery is closed for the season, Stanek said. Stanek said he also had locked the access road from Maple Beach to Lake Noquebay, and while doing so noticed that the gate post there has sunk.
In his report on problem properties, Wade reported formal notice has been served that legal action will be taken if the Cynthia Magerowski property at W7586 County X is not cleaned up in 30 days, and Wendy Gribbin Klawitter will be issued a citation if her property at W7382 County X is not cleaned up by the end of the coming week.
The meeting ended with wishes for everyone to have a good holiday season.
