Dan Klimek Named New Grover ChiefIssue Date: January 6, 2022 The Town of Grover meeting was held Tuesday, Jan. 4 with a short agenda.
After approval of the agenda and other formalities, the meeting moved into Public Comment with resident Monica Schwittay asking, "What is the deal with roads not being plowed out? No offense but I don't want to be running my equipment up and down to get rid of the snow because once there is damage to the road that is going to be on my tail". Chairman Brad Wyss replied, "Traditionally we wait to plow until after the snowstorm is over. This last storm we were going out with a grader in your area. That cleans up good but it doesn't sand and salt it. We then followed through shortly after with a sand and salt mix". Clerk/Treasurer Lisa Witak interjected, "I know the road was open the morning of the last snow storm". Wyss added, "We can change the way we plow, but that is going to cost substantially more, we have always waited until after the snow was done, otherwise your just running trucks twice as much to double back. We did get caught with that one snowstorm that was like concrete when it stuck to the pavement". Jim Wortner from Road King then commented, "The only one that was a challenge was the one that was the mix of snow, rain, melting and freezing, but the rest of them we plowed normal and the roads were all done within seven hours. We have never plowed before the snow was done".
Another result from the storm were downed trees that were cleaned up but there are still some on Bridge Road that need cleaning up. Wyss added if anyone sees any areas that need attention to let them know and it will be taken care of.
A comment was made by a resident that the road by town hall has always been plowed for the fire department and the last storm the road was not cleared. Wyss added, "I heard from the Fire Department about that bad storm, but haven't heard from them other than that".
Dan Klimek, Grover - Porterfield Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief is now the Fire Chief. He was sworn in after the meeting. Klimek said, "That was a bad one with the slush and ruts on the road. Hindsight is 20/20. I was out with my tractor along with many others. There wasn't much they could do with that storm". Schwittay added "With the situation of the weather conditions of melting, freezing and snowing, we have to think a little smarter and be proactive instead of reactive".
With Assistant Fire Chief Klimek now accepting the Fire Chief position as of Jan. 1, 2022, it leaves the Assistant position available. Klimek advised the position has to posted for 30 days and it will be for filling out the remaining one year term and then it will be on the regular two year rotation. He also added, the new pickup truck is on order and have been notified that it may not be available until September of 2022.
In his Fire Department report, Klimek noted that it was busy with 148 calls for 2021, including 19 calls on one day, lots of trees down, some carbon dioxide calls, EMS calls and a City of Marinette fire call assist.
Work has started on the remodel of the interior and office of the Town Hall. Wyss commented they received an updated quote that was $1,800 so far and with additions of desk, four drawer cabinet, one drawer pullout and a two drawer file cabinet, it will add approximately $350. The original amount was approved as not to exceed $2,300, so no action was needed and they will decide what they will move forward with, if any, of possible changes or additions that fall beneath the $2,300.
With the absence of a Zoning Administrator the Town advertised for the position and Shane Seefeldt, who was the zoning administrator a few years back, applied and was approved for the position that was also effective immediately.
Another vacancy opening was for Supervisor II of which Allen Carlson applied for and was approved for the position effective immediately.
Before the meeting ended, Chief Klimek commented, "We had another fatality at Kasal Lane, are they ever going to do anything with that intersection"? Wyss replied, The lights that were installed along with the acceleration lane several years back really seemed to help. I don't think the State is going to do anything". Supervisor I Katie VanDeWalle then questioned, "From a Town standpoint, are we able to shut off Vernon Hills Drive to the highway? What are our options"? Residents also made comments with possible right turn only, or putting in something similar like they did in Abrams. Resident Gordy Klimek added he had an idea that he showed the state and he will take Wyss out and show him the plan in person of what can be done without having to shut anything down. Wortner added there is a DOT personnel that comes to the area every week and I will get you his number. Wyss agreed to contact the DOT to see what possible options would be available to make the area safer.
The next meeting will be held Tuesday, Feb. 1 at 6:30 p.m.
