Marie Tomaszewski, 92, passed away Friday, May 12, 2017 at St. Mary's Home in Manitowoc.
She was born June 21, 1924 in a log cabin belonging to her grandfather in Crivitz and her parents were the late Frank and Mary Worachek. She lived most of her life there and attended Crivitz High School and then Vocational School in Green Bay. She worked for Northern Transportation Company of Green Bay and returned to Crivitz on weekends.
On May 17, 1946, she married Walter Tomaszewski of Crivitz, who had recently returned from Germany after World War II and together they started Tommy's Sport Shop in Crivitz. While he trapped minnows, she was in charge of the shop, counting out dozens of minnows and using a pencil to pick up the night crawlers she sold. She used her vocational skills by writing the Crivitz news for the Peshtigo Times for over half a century, until her retirement at age 81.
She was involved in many activities, was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, sang in the choir and was active in the Christian Women's Organization. With her love of reading, she helped promote the building of the Crivitz Library and was on the first library board. She was also on the Historical Society board that built the Crivitz Museum, belonged to the Crivitz Writer's Club, the Northeast Garden Club, the Crivitz Recreation Association and the American Legion.
She received many honors including Woman of the Year from the Crivitz Recreation Association, the second woman to receive the award. In 2014, she received a certificate from the American Legion for being a continuous member for 60 years.
She enjoyed life, square dancing, polka dancing at weddings, traveling with her husband, her brothers and their wives and friends. The couple visited the 48 states, with her favorite being Las Vegas where she played the slots. She will be remembered for her chicken soup and her hand decorated Christmas cookie ornaments.
She is survived by a brother, Lawrence (MaryAnn) Worachek of Crivitz; four children, Jane (Gary) Thompson of Cleveland, Jim (Debbie) Tomaszewski and David Tomaszewski , both of Crivitz and Tony (Jamie) Tomaszewski of West Allis; 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; two sons, Walter Terrence Tomaszewski and John (Jack) Tomaszewski of Crivitz; two brothers, John Worachek of Reedsville, and Frank Worachek of Necedah and a sister, Sr. Francile of St. Paul, Mn.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 19 at Rhodes Charapata Funeral Home in Crivitz from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., followed by a Mass at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Church in Crivitz. A graveside service will follow.
