Redbirds Take Two in Weekend Double Header
Hosting the Appleton A's the Marinette Redbirds were able to secure two wins Saturday afternoon taking the first game 2-0 and the second game 2-1.
Marinette's game one was all about the defense and it showed as the A's struggled to get a runner to third base.
Marinette started the evenings hitting action with a first inning Ryan Woods single. Austin Belonga brought him in off a single to center.
Marinette got their second run of the evening in the second inning when Jason Hofer led off with a walk and went home off Jordan Rasner single to center.
Then it was four and a half innings of scoreless baseball as Marinette helped the A's off for the 2-0 win.
Cody Bezio took the mound win allowing four hits, no runs and no walks while striking out one.
Sheboygan's Rodney Valdez took the loss giving up five hits, two earned runs and three walks while striking out nine.
At the plate Marinette was led by Blake Miller with a two of three showing. Belonga was one of two with one RBI while Woods was one of three with one run.
The A's where led by Logan Reckert with a one of two performance at the plate.
Game two was a bit closer but not by much as the A's wriggled in one run while the Redbirds kept their pace with another two run game.
Marinette again found the first run in the opening inning. Jordan Powers led off with a walk and went home when Scott Eldredge hit a fly out to left field.
The third was another inning that the Redbirds found success at the plate as Eldredge swatted a single and crushed home on a past ball.
The A's managed to get one across in the sixth as Taylor Grim hit a single and John Vanderploeg a fly to left that gave Grim his opening.
Marinette's Brian Bell took the win over six innings allowing five hits, one earned run and four walks. He struck out six on the day.
Vanderploeg took the loss for the A's giving up three hits, two runs (one earned) and six walks while striking out six. At the plate Marinette's Eldredge was one of two with one run and one RBI while Jason Hofer and Weslie Rivera were both one of three.
The A's Grim went two of three with a run while Grant Kosanke was two of three.
