Susan M. Johnston
Susan (Sue) Mary (Klass) Johnston, 60, of Monroe, Va., passed away Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2016 at home after an 18 year battle with cancer.
Born Feb. 26, 1956, in Menominee, Mi., to the late Robert Carl Klass and Jacqueline Witeck Klass, in her final days, she expressed her desire to reunite with her parents.
Her husband, William (Bill) Michael Johnston, was her caregiver and cared for her through her battle and in her final months, remaining at her side for her final breaths.
She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing at UW-Madison in 1978 and a degree of Masters in Nursing at Old Dominion University with a Family Nurse Practitioner Certification by the Commonwealth of Virginia Boards of Nursing and Medicine in 2001.
She retired as a Registered Nurse in 2016 after 25 years at University of Virginia Health System Pediatrics Emergency Department. Her life was devoted to serving others as a life guard in high school and college, pulling kids out of the pool, as an emergency room nurse saving many lives and later a nurse practitioner serving medical needs of many. Her most enjoyable, fulfilling experiences were as a nurse caring for children.
She liked having a good time, her laugh was genuine and contagious and her inner child lived on through the end. There was lots of laughter and her friends and family had positive love for each other.
She volunteered for the Girls on the Run Youth Organization, the annual Habitat for Humanity 5K Run in the Town of Amherst and at Sweet Briar College. She had high energy, an uplifting spirit, a positive fun loving attitude, toughness, determination, friendliness, laughter and a bright smile.
She enjoyed music, drumming, jogging, hiking, kayaking and spending time outdoors with her husband and their dogs and had a huge heart, especially for kids and dogs.
A good understanding of life and how to live it, she was comfortable with how she lived life and had a firm belief in a spiritual after life. She was a gift from God and she will be missed by her family.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Benjamin Michael Johnston of Leesburg, Adam Christopher Johnston of Petersburg and Luke William Johnston of Lynchburg; three siblings, Michael (Dori) Klass of Oro Valley, Az., Barbara (Angelo) Perrus of Green Bay, Wis. and Patrick (Mary) Klass of Seymour and many other family members and friends.
