Issue Date: September 6, 2017
Wausaukee-A Blood Drive will be held at the Wausaukee School on Monday, Sept. 25th from 12:30 to 5:30 pm. The Wausaukee Lions and Leos along with Legion members will help. Persons may come anytime of the day. All Wausaukee blood drives qualify for senior scholarships. This year $2,500 in scholarships were given to Wausaukee seniors. Call Barb at 715-759-5747 or 715-927-5213 to make an appointment or just walk in. The goal of 50 pints is necessary to maintain have good staffing.
Red bloods cells can also be drawn. Those who meet the criteria may give by making an appointment as this type of donating will stop about 4:30 p.m. before the end of the drive. This will count as 2 units or pints.
Healthy donors may give every 56 days or 8 weeks. Donors may give in Wausaukee and Crivitz all year round and Silver Cliff twice. Persons must be at least 17 years old and weigh at least 110 pounds. Students 16 years old may give blood with a form signed by their parents. Every unit of blood can be used for three or more patients. If taking any medication you may give blood but they need to be checked if okay. Diabetics may also give if they are under control. Rules have changed over the years and now many more people are able to give.
Before donating eat a good diet and drink plenty of water. This will keep one's iron count up. Low iron is the main reason people are unable to donate. Broccoli, raisins, nuts and other high iron foods also helps. Each donation can help 3-5 people.
Anyone who would like to help with the drive call Barb at 715-759-5747 or 715-927- 5213. Help is needed in loading, escorting donors, canteen, registration, setting up and taking down. Bars and cookies can also be donated. Persons may also call for an appointment to donate blood.
