Area Runners Shine at Freedom Invitational

Issue Date: September 6, 2017

Peshtigo Boys Top Team, Marinette's Carviou Has Best Finish

Peshtigo's boys cross country team was the third-best team at the 29-team Freedom Waters Invite Saturday, Sept. 2, while also finishing as the best small school team. Only Appleton North and Appleton West were better than the Bulldog boys.

Of 196 runners at the event, junior Reid Marquardt took 23rd (17:23.76), senior Tyler Lund took 29th (17:34.25), freshman Caleb Smith placed 52nd (18:02.56) and junior Cole Trimberger took 54th (18:03.06). Trimberger is coming off a state-qualification last season, but is nursing a hamstring injury.

Sophomore Cyle Michalski took 60th (18:07.20), sophomore Matt Jornlin came in 190th and junior Euan Gillespie took 192nd (24:01.11).

Runners one through five had a gap between them of 44 seconds, and that will be an area the Bulldogs will focus on this year, their coach said.

"Narrowing the gap to the low 30-second range and moving the pack closer to the front of the race will be our focus for the remainder of the season," Peshtigo Coach Keith Nault said.

The Freedom coaches, Thain Jones and Dean Aerts, held a memorial for former Peshtigo Coach Jim Stillman, who passed away last year, where they spoke of their long-time friendship with Stillman and the impact he had on the lives of many students and athletes.

Oconto Falls' boys took seventh, led by senior Noah Ludemann, who took 32nd (17:38.19). Junior Brody Schindel came in 35th (17:41.59), senior Justan Konitzer placed 40th (17:50.95), senior Jared Van Haren came in 75th (18:28.39), junior Brent Wolf took 86th (18:44.79), sophomore Evan Roberts came in 99th (19:02.44) and junior Dylan Nelson was one second behind Roberts, taking 100th with a time of 19:03.02.

Coleman came in 17th as a team, led by their two leaders, senior Miles Kremsreiter and junior Kasey Casper. Kremsreiter took 27th with a time of 17:29.84 and Casper placed 28th, just three seconds behind (17:32.71).

Junior Caleb Gross placed 71st (18:20.39), junior Koltin Grzybowski came in 128th, sophomore Brandon Engels took 174th (21:44.05) and sophomore Javlin Baars took 183rd (22:34.21).

"I was very pleased with our efforts," Coleman Becky Chaltry said. "We now have a full Boys team" Miles and Kasey were side by side most of the run which made for an exciting race."

Marinette's boys placed 18th, one spot behind the Cougars. Carson Polomis performed well for the Marines, with the junior taking 13th overall (17:02.20). Junior Jacob Michaels took 85th (18:44.23), sophomore Matt Maye placed 97th (18:57.28), junior Tyler Fayta came in 105th (19:08.81), junior tony Courchaine took 144th (20:01.24), junior Quinn Golueke placed 152nd (20:21.13) and freshman Alec Queever took 184th (22:45.15).

Crivitz came in 29th. Senior Shane Bauer took 136th (19:48.01), senior Travis Giese took 12th (21:13.66), freshman Ryley Bemis came in 178th (21:51.79), freshman Alec Grandaw came in 191st (22:52.33) and senior Rhys Pepin took 193rd (24:26.67).

Gillett did not have a full team, but they entered three runners in the boys race. Freshman Derek Hanson took 19th in the small school rankings (17:57.99), freshman Riley Engebretson took 60th in the small school standings (20:23.36) and sophomore Nate Davis took 104th (25:52.70).

Marinette's girls were the top local finisher in 14th place. Junior Kim Carviou was the best local finisher on either the boys or girls side, as she took third (19:28.24) in girls' competition. Katelyn Kitzinger also had a strong finish, as the sophomore placed 14th (20:29:95). Freshman Samantha Pieper took 64th (26:24.52), junior Makennah Jasper placed 156th (26:24.52), sophomore Madeline Torkko came in 158th (26:27.37), freshman Cora Wendt came in 160th (26:47.81) and freshman Emma Wendt placed 174th (30:19.71).

Peshtigo's girls came in 15th with two top-15 finishers of their own in senior Katrina Salmen and junior Alana Finger. Salmen took 12th with a time of 20:21.88 and Finger placed 15th (20:30.52). Junior Viola Smith took 104th (23:40.73), sophomore Maria Powers placed 129th (24:39.45), sophomore Marissa Graese took 154th (26:24.22) and junior Sidney Gullicksen came in 157th (26:25.45).

Head Coach Keith Nault said Finger beat last years' time by 47 seconds, while also noting team captain Salmen's performance, adding, "improvements like this over last year are an indicator of the fitness of the top two Bulldog women."

Oconto Falls placed 23rd as a team. Junior Breanna Sadowski took 34th (21:27.77), sophomore Autumn Canavera took 37th (21:38.91), sophomore Haley Bell took 149th (25:53.98), sophomore Morgan Helmle took 163rd (27:16.70), sophomore Morgan Van Haren placed 172nd (29:37.43), junior Katie Kurth took 175th (33:08.51) and junior Emily Gonnering came in 176th (34:24.34).

Crivitz was 24th. Senior Lexi Oyer took 55th (22:24.79), junior Kjirsten Stumbris took 110th (23:52.37), sophomore Taylor Giese placed 127th (24:36.31), sophomore Zoey Brown took 155th (26:24.22), senior Lexi Schroeder placed 162nd (27:11.11) and junior Rebekah Poh took 166th (27:39.98).

Coleman only had two runners, freshman Molly Seefeldt, who was 18th in the small school standings and senior Anna Dohl, who was 26th. The two ran respective times of 22:46.93 and 23:27.94.

Both times were personal records, Head Coach Becky Chaltry said.

Gillett did not have enough runners for a full team, but they did have the fastest small-school runner, as freshman Sylvia Hansen ran a 19:25.12 for a 3:53 pace.

"She is one of our freshman this year but that doesn't stop her from going, getting in a good position and finishing strong," Gillett Coach Emily Young said. "Sylvia is an athlete and she has something in her that a coach can't teach, which is self-discipline, focus and a hunger to do her very best at every practice and every meet. I'm excited to see where this season will take her."

Senior Lauren Herzog was seventh in the small school race (20:44.57), senior Becca Brehmer was 11th (21:30.07) and sophomore Ana Grover took 53rd (24:37.13).

"Lauren also had a great meet as well. She raced with confidence and strength" She also has a great season to look forward to."
