Mary J. (Jones) Higley, 97, passed away Friday, Oct. 20, 2017 with family at her side at the Harbors Retirement Community in Menominee, Mi.
Born Jan. 7, 1920 in Clifton, Az., to the late Dr. William S. and Edith (Jackman) Jones Sr., she graduated from Menominee High School in 1938 and attended University of Arizona where she studied home economics and was a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. She married Hugh Clifford Higley Sr. on June 21, 1941 in Menominee.
A member of First Presbyterian Church in Menominee, she served as an Elder and Deacon and volunteered as a Cub Scout den mother, for the Red Cross, local hospital auxiliaries and the PTA. She belonged to and served as president of the Chapter BK of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and the Wisconsin State Chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood (1971-1972). She was also a member of the Menominee Women's Club, the Daughters of the American Revolution and served on the boards of the Salvation Army and the Menominee Cemetery.
She led an active life, enjoyed playing the organ, traveling, needlework, cooking, working in her home, yard work and being with her grandchildren.
She is survived by two sons, David (Carol Lynn) Higley and William (Kandy) Higley, both of Menominee; a daughter-in-law, Marge Higley of Ann Arbor, Mi.; 11 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren; a sister, Elizabeth J. Smith of Phoenix, Az.; a sister-in-law, Joyce Bauman of Marinette and many nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh C. Higley Sr.; a son, Hugh C. Higley Jr. and a brother, Dr. William S. Jones Jr.
Friends may call at First Presbyterian Church in Menominee on Saturday, Oct. 28 from 1 p.m. until time of the funeral services at 3 p.m. Rev. Jon Nelson will officiate followed by a private family burial at Riverside Cemetery in Menominee.
