PATRIOTIC TRUCKS-Eugene Frank, a Veteran of Viet Nam recognizes his fellow veterans with a "Tribute to Our Troops" on each of the trucks in his fleet. A number of his trucks will be on display during a program on Veterans Day November 11, 2017 at George Webbs/Eagle Express. Shown from left are Chris Frank, along with his son, Logan Frank and father, Eugene Frank, standing in front of one of the Patriotic themed fleet of trucks owned by Franks Logging Co. Peshtigo.

Eagle Express/George Webb's To Honor Area Veterans on Nov. 11th

Issue Date: November 8, 2017

Veterans Day is intended to honor and thank all military personnel who served the United States in all wars, particularly living veterans. In honor of this day the Eagle Express Truck Stop will give a five cent per gallon discount from Nov. 6 to Nov. 12 to all veterans. A number of special tributes are also being planned to salute those who served.

On Saturday, Nov. 11 George Webb's Restaurant located inside the Truck Stop will offer a free Classic Breakfast from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. to all veterans. The breakfast consists of two eggs, freshly grilled hash browns or American fries, a side of toast and coffee. Volunteer hostesses from Operation United Hearts will conduct special activities starting with a personal greeting where each veteran will receive a flag lapel pin and a patriotic coaster representing the various military branches served in, while supplies last. These coasters were hand made by the ladies of the "Wisconsin Warmers" of the Oshkosh Senior Center.

Each veteran will also receive five free tickets for door prize gift baskets filled with items donated by area businesses and citizens wanting to show their appreciation for the veteran's services. Gift baskets will be on display for veterans to pick and choose which items they will put their tickets in, hoping they will be the lucky winner of that item. Door prize drawings will take place throughout the day, and you do not have to be present to win! Each veteran will also receive a special ticket for the drawing of a handmade queen size "Patriotic Quilt" and matching sham made by and donated by Cheryl Klemmer of Omro and quilted by Cindy Heuer of Fond du Lac.

"Mail Call" will be heard throughout the program as special messages from the Peshtigo Learning Center and Peshtigo Junior/High school students will bring words of thanks to each veteran.

Veterans will have the opportunity to stick around and visit volunteer veterans of foreign wars: Eugene Frank-Viet Nam, Henry Klemmer-Viet Nam, Troy Noble-Afghanistan and Beverly M. Parrette-Iraq. These veterans will be on hand to make sure that no veteran eats alone or too simply sit and visit over a bottomless cup of coffee.

Available on display from 7 a.m. to noon will be an exhibit of bronze military grave markers created by Henry J. Klemmer, Omro, a veteran of Viet Nam. These military flag holders are a familiar sight in cemeteries all over the country honoring a veteran's grave. The sight of the the American flag gently blowing in the breeze as it stands tall in one of these markers, you immediately know that flag is representing a veterans final resting place. Today these bronze military flag holders can also be seen proudly displaying a flag in honor of the veteran who resides there. This exhibit includes an inclusive representation of all wars fought by US Military on American soil as well as foreign soil dating from the War of 1812 to the most current war in Afghanistan.

Armistice Day is commemorated every year on Nov. 11 to mark the armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany at Compiègne, France, for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of World War I, which took effect at 11 a.m. in the morning, the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the 11th month" in 1918. On Armistice Day it was proclaimed that at 11 a.m. that day should be "filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for their service."

Keeping with that commemoration a special program will take place at 11 A.M. followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and singing of the National Anthem ending with a message to veterans from Peshtigo Mayor, Cathy Malke.

The committee says they like to think that "Only in Peshtigo" could this outpouring of respect to our veterans be accomplished in such a fun, fulfilling and honorable way, so please join us and take this time to "Thank A Veteran." Organizers and committee members of Operation United Hearts are Kathy Crabtree, Tammy Barrett, Bev Doucette, Violet Frank, Nancy Bruce and Glenda Mathews.
