Born November 10, 1935, son of the late Lawrence and Genevieve (Schounard) Hartwig of Marinette, he spent his childhood growing up in Marinette as well as spending much time at their farm his family also owned between Grover and Coleman.
Before graduating from Marinette High School, Robert attended Martin Luther High School in New Ulm, MN where he was an exceptional athlete setting many state records in basketball.
After graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served as a dental assistant and technician while stationed in Germany. Returning home after 4 years of service he was introduced to and later married the love of his life, the former Donna Schroeder of Loomis WI on September 5, 1959.
He worked at Marinette Paper Company (Scott Paper) from 1959 -1963, then moved to Peshtigo and took over his fathers gas station business shortly after his father unexpectedly passed away. He opened an additional gas station a few years later, Hartwig's Gas-4-Less in Crivitz. In 1987, Robert built and operated the Rubber Ducky Car Wash in Marinette and retired in 1998.
As a member of St. Mark Church in Wallace and over 40 year member of Zion Lutheran Church in Peshtigo, he was active in many church activities and served as a council member and church officer numerous times.
Affectionately known to many in his later years only as Papa, he was devoted to and cherished the time he spent following his 3 grandsons academic and athletic accomplishments, where ever that took him. He often commented it was the greatest joy of his life to see his grandson's play ball and succeed in life. He also enjoyed traveling with family and his dearest friends, always seeking fun and adventures.
