THE CITY REBORN FROM THE ASHES OF AMERICA'S MOST DISASTROUS FOREST FIRE
Doris (Douglas) (Goehring) Vandello, 95, passed away Saturday, Jan. 16, 2018 at an area hospital.
Born Dec. 23, 1922 in Iron Mountain, Mi., to the late Leonard and Hazel (Nauman) Douglas, the family moved to Jim Falls when she was a child. She graduated from Chippewa Falls High School and later attended UW-Madison.
She married Merlin Goehring on June 19, 1942 in New Orleans and their honeymoon was a three hour cruise on the Mississippi River before he reported for duty in the United States Navy.
They had five children and in the early years of their marriage, she was a housewife and stay-at-home mom. Later she received an Education degree at UW-Oshkosh and taught first grade at Denmark Elementary for six years before he was transferred to Marinette. She then returned to school and received an associate degree in Office Management.
She worked as an office manager for Dr. Ken Yuska until retiring in 1988 and her husband preceded her in death in 1987.
She enjoyed sewing, learned to quilt in retirement and wintered in Florida, where she met widower, Richard "Dick" Vandello, whom she later married. They traveled taking cruises, bus tours and their timeshares. They summered in Wisconsin, reuniting with their children and grandchildren.
She is survived by four children, Tim (Elaine) Goehring, Steven (Beatrice) Rose, Richard Goehring and Heidi Goehring; a step-son, Don (Mikel) Vandello; two grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by both husbands, Merlin Goehring and Dick Vandello; a daughter, Lydia Goehring and a grandson, Dale Goehring.
Per the family's wishes, a Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Cotter Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the family.
