Gary A. Roland
Gary Adam Roland, 73, of Ashwaubenon, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2018.
Born Aug. 27, 1944 at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay, to Adam Roland and Roxanna (Roland) VanLandghen, he was the fifth of six children and for his first seven years, lived on a farm in Ashwaubenon. His family then moved to Oneida Street in Green Bay where he attended Cormier School and Jackson Elementary School for grades 1 - 8. He then attended Franklin Middle School and graduated from Green Bay West High School in 1963.
He was in choirs and talent shows in school and after graduating, he worked many jobs, including Oshkosh Trucking, Tidy Laundry and Murphy Cement. The rest of his life was spent in building, mostly as a finish carpenter. He built his first home as a bachelor and later built a home on Sunny Creek Drive.
He loved music, was a charter member of Calvary Lutheran Church, sang in the choirs for over 50 years and was one of two people who started the "Boys Choir", accompanying them on guitar. He was in a band in the mid to late 60's called the Infiniters and they played at Bay Beach Pavilion and teen hangouts. He and his friend, Don Kanugh, then formed a band called "Him and Me". He played guitar and Don played accordion at local bars, weddings, class reunions and other special occasions.
He enjoyed hunting deer and turkey with his crossbow, black powder and rifle and spent many hours at the hunting shack teaching his sons to hunt.
He met the love of his life, Anita Torkelson on a "blind date" to a Packer/Viking football game in October of 1971. They were engaged two weeks after, married on June 10, 1972, were together for 45 years and raised two sons.
The family enjoyed many trips together throughout the United States and Europe and were involved in their sons' lives in scouting, music, high school football, swimming and more.
He is survived by his wife, Anita; two sons, Robert (Andrea) of Champlin, Mn. and Garrick (girlfriend, Melissa Favorito) of St. Charles, Mo.; two grandsons; a brother, Donald Roland, Mountain; sisters and brothers-in-law, Bonnie (James) Haverkorn, LaVonne Carpenter, Sonya (Wayne) Black and Diane (Bob) Link, all of Green Bay, Diana Torkelson, Altoona and Dale and Mary Jo Torkelson, Black River Falls and many special nieces; nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Adam; his mother, Roxanna and two brothers-in-law, Robert and Kenneth Torkelson.
Visitation was held at Calvary Lutheran Church in Green Bay on Saturday, Jan. 20 from 9 a.m. until time of the funeral service at 11 a.m., with Pastor Earl Vorpagel III officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in Beaver Creek Lutheran Church Cemetery in Taylor. Lyndahl Funeral Home of Green Bay assisted the family with arrangements.
