Michael J. "Mike" Nelson, 69, of Green Bay, formerly of Gillett, passed away Friday afternoon, Feb. 2, 2018 at home.
Born Jan. 7, 1949 in Oconto Falls, to Alfred "Swede" and Jeannette (Backhaus) Nelson, he grew up on the family farm in the Town of Underhill, attended Gillett Public Schools and graduated from Gillett High School in 1967. He served in the United States Army in Vietnam.
He lived in the Gillett area for most of his life where he worked at the local canning factory until a disability forced early retirement. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and working in the woods on his CAT and was a lifelong member of Christ Lutheran Church in Hintz.
Survivors include seven siblings, Sandy Wilson, Gillett, Barbara (Soren) Sorlie, Cecil, Judy Nelson, Green Bay, Marsha (James) Mahan, Appleton and Pat (Rhonda) Nelson, Debbie Nelson and Bill (Barb) Nelson, all from Hintz and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Sidney Wilson.
Visitation was held at Jones Funeral Service in Oconto Falls on Tuesday, Feb. 6 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visitation continued at Christ Lutheran Church in the Town of Underhill (Hintz) on Wednesday, Feb. 7 from 9:30 a.m. until time of the funeral services at 11 a.m. Rev. Michael Paholke officiated followed by burial in the Church Cemetery.
