Area Boys Begin Regional Playoffs

Issue Date: February 28, 2018

Eagles Soar to Regional Victory

The Suring Eagles took a solid WIAA Regional win Tuesday night when they took down the visiting Elcho Hornets 71-31.

The gigantic lead was thanks to a superlative first half from Suring's Ryan Mahoney who fired in 19 first half points.

By the end of the first half the Eagles seemed to have the win already in the bag as they held a 37-19 lead.

Things didn't let up for the Hornets over the second half as the Eagles pounded in another 34 points to Elcho's 12.

Mahoney need the night as the games top performer with 28 points. Caleb Lally followed up with 16 points while Cody Smith got six.

Mac Morrison led the Hornets with 15 points while Hunter Novak got seven.

Florence Takes Down

Goodman-Pembine In

Regional Action

The Florence Bobcat boys bagged an 80-73 win over the Goodman-Pembine Patriots Tuesday night to advance to the next round of the WIAA playoffs.

Riley Hixon took the lion's share of the points Tuesday night with 30 points to his name. Evan Beaster posted 26 while Kaden Schuls added 18.

"I think we absolutely saved our best game for our last," said Patriot Head Coach John Swick. "We got off to a good start and grabbed an early lead. Both teams were able to hang in as we took turns going on runs and then getting stops. We came out a little slow in the second half and got down by 10 pretty quickly but battled back to make it a one point game late. Then it came down to free throws and ball security and we just couldn't finish it off. Hats off to Florence, they made the shots they needed at all the right times. It's always hard to lose but this one is hard for the seniors that are moving on. They are an amazing bunch and did themselves proud tonight."

The Patriots were led by Hagan Braaten with 27 points and Elisha Heath with 13 points. Wyatt Marcy added 12 points while Caleb Nelson chipped in with 10 points.

Marines Advance With

Win Over Jaguars

A big first half propelled the Marinette Marines to a double-digit win over the Ashwaubenon Jaguars in the first round of playoff competition on Tuesday.

Marinette led 32-19 at the break, negating the effects of a 28-25 second half from the Jaguars.

Matt Wagner had 19 for Marinette, while Jake Poetzl had 14 and Jordan Wendt added 11. Wagner shot 5-14 from the field, but was an efficient 7-8 at the free throw line.

The team was 15-19 at the line. Wendt also made five of six and completed his double-double with 10 rebounds, though that was barely half as many as Ashwaubenon's leading rebounder.

Ashwaubenon's Anthony Guarascio led all scorers with 23 points on 10-25 shooting, with 19 rebounds to boot. Despite his 19, Marinette out-rebounded the Jaguars 33-32.

Cougars Post

Playoff Win

The Coleman Cougars will not be hanging up the shoes just yet. Tuesday night they took on Laona/Wabeno for a WIAA Regional playoff matchup and survived by the skin of their teeth 57-55.

The two point win had everything to do with the efforts a of Cole Woulf, Austin Marquardt and Cayden Bintz. The Three cougars wouldn't be denied and the score sheets are this out. But the end of the game Marquardt was the games top scorers with 20 points. Woulf had 17 while Bintz bagged 13.

Jacob Christiansen led the Rebels with 13 points while teammates Jesse Pakulski and Baylen Caley both got 11 each.

STAA Moves to Next

Round of Tournament

The St. Thomas Aquinas Cavalier's secured a WIAA Regional playoff victory over the visiting White Lake boys Tuesday night 43-39.

The closing battle was highlighted by a super effort from cavalier Jack Farley, who found a way to post 25 points, enough for the top scoring spot, helping to push hs Cavvies past White Lake.

Christian Hornick also did his part with 13 points while Tyler Stuart added five for all the points the Cavs obtained.

White Lake was led by Jamison Smith with 12 points. Chris Schewe posted nine.

Bulldogs Stall Trucker

Offense; Face Little

Chute Friday

The Peshtigo Bulldogs defeated the Clintonville Truckers 58-42 on Tuesday in the first round of regionals, holding their opponent to just 30 percent shooting from the field.

The Truckers went 15-50 overall, launching 22 shots from three-point range and making nine, amassing only 14 points in the first half.

"I thought we played good team defense," Bulldogs Coach Nate Motkowski said. "It wasn't just one or two guys that played really tough defense. We went 10 guys deep early. All 10 came in and played tough defense and I think that made the difference.

Kyle Finger led the Truckers with 11. Presley Rosenow and Aiden Polzin got 10 each.

The Bulldogs won the rebounding battle 37-22, led by senior guard Max Neumann, who had nine. He also scored 10 points.

Trent Carriveau led the Bulldogs on the offensive end with 12 points on 6-9 shooting. Cameron Noffke got nine, while both Mitchell VanVooren and Nick Nielson added six.

The Bulldogs made 22-50 shots, attempting only four three-pointers. The team only shot 13-25 from the free throw line, however.

As for attempting only four shots from deep, Motkowski said "We talked about that in the last couple days, where we want to score inside and we want to score there early. I thought our guys got some wide-looks."

Motkowski credited the Truckers, who didn't allow the lead to balloon in the second half, for hanging around in the second half.

"I give them all the credit in the world," Motkowski said. "It doesn't matter if they're up 10 or down 30, they play hard until the whistle blows."

The Bulldogs face Little Chute in the next round of the playoffs.

"We know they've got some big guys and shooters. They mix it up on defense a little bit," Motkowski said. "We lost at their place last year in the regional final so we're kind of looking to get back at them. I know we're going to have to be a bit cleaner."
