Peshtigo Splits a Pair; Marines Edge Out Tigers

Issue Date: April 26, 2018

Bulldog Boys Split a Pair in the Dells

Peshtigo beat Crandon 11-8 in Wisconsin Dells Tuesday, but they committed nine errors and fell to Rhinelander on Tuesday.

Against Rhinelander, the Bulldogs' pitching staff allowed six runs, with just one earned, in the 6-4 loss.

Nick Neilson started the game, going two and two thirds innings, allowing one unearned run. Darren Dionne went two and a third, with two unearned runs, and Nolan Lemke went two innings, with two unearned runs and one earned run.

Riley Reif, Trevor Bloch, Travis Plym and Brody Heroux each scored runs, but the Bulldogs struck out 12 times.

"It was our first game outside in almost a month and it definitely showed," Bulldogs coach Neal Henrigillis said. "It's almost impossible to win a game committing nine errors and striking out 12 times."

It wasn't all negative, however. "On the positive side, we stuck with a tough Rhinelander team and the bottom of our order had good at-bats. Hopefully it was just jitters with getting back on the field."

The Bulldogs allowed eight runs in the second game, but their bats came alive, with Reif, Bloch, Heroux and Brandon Eick each scoring two runs. Mitchell Ahrens, Plym and Nielson all scored as well.

Eick had a triple and two RBI to go along with his two runs in the second game. Bloch also had a good day overall, with Henrigillis saying of his second hitter, who drew three walks, "Trevor had a good, patient day at the plate. He set the table for our middle of the order."

Jacob Gordon came in in relief and got the win, pitching two innings. He struck out four and didn't allow any runs, after Brock Bero started and allowed four runs. Alex Dolata pitched two and two thirds, allowing four runs, half of them earned.

It was the relievers' first two times pitching at the varsity level, and Henrigillis said "they both showed good composure and handled themselves in a positive manner."

Henrigillis said the team was poor on defense again, but said, "our bats were better and we ran the bases aggressively, which gave us a lead throughout the game."

Marines Hold on to Early Lead, Drop Wrightstown 4-2

Marinette got its first win of the season with a 4-2 victory over Wrightstown on Tuesday, April 24, improving its record to 1-2.

The Marines dropped a double-header to Luxemburg-Casco earlier this spring before snow delayed the sports season further.

Marinette jumped on Wrightstown early, scoring a run in the first, two in the second and one in the third.

"We were able to get out early, get some runners on base and score on some miscues on their end," Marinette coach Andy Walters said. "It wasn't a real flashy game for us, but when it's early in the season like this and cold, a win is a win."

Tanner Cole came around to score in the first inning after reaching on an error. He also singled in the second.

Matt Eldredge singled and scored in the second inning, while Will LaLonde came around to score after a walk got him on base. Trey Bretl gave the Marines their final run in the fourth, walking and coming around to score.

The Marines only had five hits in the game, but they were able to draw some walks and get runs on the board.

Bretl started the game on the mound, pitching 5 and two thirds innings, striking out eight Tigers and allowing two earned runs.

"He did a really nice job," Walters said of Bretl's start. "It was definitely a pretty solid performance."

Eldredge came into the game in the sixth with runners on second and third and two outs, escaping from the inning and closing out the game.

Rangers Slip Past Maroons on Gruszynski Walk-off SingleThe Wausaukee Rangers edged the Menominee Maroons on Monday 5-4 on the strength of a seventh inning single off the bat of Tyler Gruszynski.

Menominee had tied the game 4-4 in the top half of the seventh. Billy Bailey led off the inning with a walk, advanced to second on a fielders choice and scored on a single by jacob Rivard.

With the game tied, Cole Caylor led off the bottom of the seventh with a double into the right-center field gap. Gruszynski came to the plete and after taking a ball, hit a sharp single to right field scoring Caylor to end the game. Kyle Struve got the win for the Rangers in relief. The loss went to Menominee Kyle Anderson.

The Rangers were led at the plate by Hayden Renikow, Justin Parr, Caylor and Gruszunski who all went 2 for 3 on the day. The Maroons got a 2 for 4 effort from Rivard.

Crivitz Clips Crandon, Drops Contest to Rhinelander

The Crivitz Wolverines traveled to Wisconsin Dells on Tuesday and came away split in their doubleheader.

The Wolverines came up 3-1 winners in their game with the Crandon Cardinals behind a strong pitching performance by Jaden Werner. Werner went the distance allowing just one run in seven innings of work. Werner gave up three hits and walked only one batter striking out 12 Cardinal batters. The Wolverines collected five hits in the contest led by Vinnie Jopek who went 1 for 3 on the day with an RBI and a run scored.

Jacob Voss, Werner, Charlie Johnsen and Tyler Schubert all had a hit for Crivitz.

Crivitz fell to Rhinelander in their second contest 8-2. Kougar Wagner took the loss for the Wolverines going three innings giving up four runs on six hits and two walks. Alec Grandaw worked two innings giving up four runs, none of which were earned, on three hits. Austin Burnside closed out the game throwing one inning, giving up zero hits and walking one.

Jakob Vox led Crivitz at the plate collecting both Wolverine hits.

Brad Comes got the win for the Hodags.

Niagara Beats Kingsford In Extra Innings 3-2

Niagara's Josh Weber scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth on a bases loaded walk issued to teammate Ethan Sweig in Tuesdays game with the Kingsford Flivvers. The free pass broke a 2-2 tie giving the Badgers the win. A strong pitching performance by four Badgers led to the win.

Starter Anthony Hansen, Lauden Kaldor, Josh Weber and Tristan DeJardin, who got the win, combined to throw a three hit game for the Badgers. Niagara was led at the plate by Zac Prideaux who collected three of Niagara's six hits.

Coleman Powers Past Goodman/Pembine

Blake Forner led Coleman with two hits as the Cougars mauled goodman/Pembine 16-0. Mason Risner collected three RBI's and Cole Woulf had two in the win.

Wausaukee Takes Two From Laona Wabeno

The Wausaukee Rangers beat Laona/Wabeno twice on Tuesday 904 and 7-1. Aiden Shaw and Kyle Struve each picked up a win for Wausaukee. Andrew Schroeder and Matt Delfosse led the Rangers at the plate going 2x2.
