Marines Drop Panthers; Kotecki Fires No-Hitter

Issue Date: April 26, 2018

Marines Breeze Past Panthers, Start Season 4-0

Marinette used a six-run third inning to defeat Oconto Falls in a North Eastern Conference matchup, 12-5, on Tuesday, April 24.

Marinette took a two-run lead in the first inning. Chloe Lambie walked, stole a base and scored, and Mackenzie Bebo also scored, with Abi Duda picking up an RBI on a two-out hit.

"Duda stepped up and hit well," Marines coach Corry Lambie said after the game.

Oconto Falls took a 3-2 lead in the third on runs from Aly Fabry, Steph Peterson and Olivia Steffens. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Marines exploded in the third.

Lexi Kacola, Matti Renikow, Lambie, Duda, Jordan Boettcher and Syd Nemetz got a run apiece, as the Marines took the lead for good. Tatum Ihde had two RBI in the inning on a triple. Boettcher got an RBI in the inning and Lambie had two.

Oconto Falls got two back in the fourth with a two-run homerun for Katelyn Albrecht, but it wasn't enough to get back into a lead.

Bebo scored again in the fifth inning on a Duda RBI and the Marines got three more in the fifth. Renikow, Ihde and Maya Carviou each scored, with a couple of Panther errors in the inning aiding in the scoring.

"We did a nice job waiting for strikes," coach Lambie said. "We hit the ball well to the opposite field. To me that's a sign that you're letting it get deep in the zone, you're not getting out in front and hitting the ball weakly."

Nemetz, who is just a freshman, was the team's starting pitcher.

"I was very impressed with composure and her competitiveness out there," coach Lambie said. "She never got rattled. She just kept throwing strikes. I was very pleased with the freshman going out there and battling back after a few moments of adversity."

Marinette didn't commit any errors in the game, despite cooling temperatures around gametime.

"I think if we struggle throwing strikes, playing defense in this weather stinks. Nobody enjoys it. If we can keep it around the plate and make them put the ball in play, the girls are happy to go out there and play defense, so our goal for our pitchers is to go out there and have no more than three walks a night," Lambie said. "It was cool, but that's one of those uncontrollables, and you just go out there and compete. Because they were around the plate all night, I think we played solid defense."

Coleman Cruises Behind Kotecki No-Hitter

The Coleman Cougars scored an 8-1 victory over Goodman/Pembine on Tuesday riding the no-hit pitching performance by Annabelle Kotecki to the victory. Kotecki struck out eight and walked just two batters in five innings of work.

Goodman/Pembine's one run was unearned.

The Cougars leading hitters were Kotecki who went 2 for 3 with a triple, Lauren Osterberg who was 2 for 2, Kailey Klimek, Amy Hoffman, and Beth Gannigan each collected a hit.

Kalen Berger took the loss for Goodman/Pembine.

Peshtigo Cruises Past Crandon, Falls to Rhinelander

Peshtigo split a pair of games Tuesday in Wisconsin Dells, the team's first games of the season, falling to Rhinelander and defeating Crandon.

The Bulldogs beat Crandon 9-4. Crandon took a 1-0 lead after one inning, and the teams were tied 2-2 after three, but it was all Bulldogs from there.

Kennedy Chmela and Madi Martin each scored runs in the second to give the Bulldogs a lead. Crandon tied it up in the third.

A three-run fourth was important for the Bulldogs to get the win, as Shae Tonn, Grace Meyers and Martin all scored.

Emma Frederickson scored runs in the fifth and seventh and the Bulldogs got two in the sixth from Tonn and Olivia Lewis.

Tonn got on base three times in the Crandon game, as did Martin.

Crandon relied heavily on Lindsey Littleton, who scored three of the team's four runs.

Against Rhinelander, the Bulldogs lost a high-scoring affair 12-8. Tonn went 2-5 to lead the Bulldogs at the plate. Lewis, Chmela, Frederickson, Meyers and Skylar Watson each recorded a hit. Tonn went the distance and was tagged with the loss, giving up seven hits and striking out seven. Frederickson lead the team with three runs batted in.

Lady Rangers Make Easy Work of Thunder Hawks

Wausaukee scored seven first inning runs against Oneida Nation on Monday and never looked back in a 12-2 victory.

Lexi Zak got the win for the Rangers working three innings without giving up a run. Zak struck out six and did not walk a batter.

Noemi Faustino took the loss going the distance allowing 12 runs on 3 hits and 7 walks.

The Rangers were led at the plate by Sammy Gruszynski, Sirina Tyler and Madelyn Schlies with one hit each.

Wausaukee Edged by Laona/Wabeno in Non-Conference Play

The Lady Rangers were edged by Laona/Wabeno 9-8 at home in extra innings on Tuesday. Maddison Renikow lead the way for Wausaukee going 3 for 4 with three runs scored. Madelyn Schlies went 2 for 3 and Kaelyn Schlies had a single for the Rangers.

Libby Tinsman got the win for Laona/Wabeno.

Wolverines Beat Cardinals, Fall to Hodags in the Dells

The Crivitz softball split a pair of games in Wisconsin Dells on Tuesday getting past Crandon 10-6 and falling to Rhinelander 15-2.

The Wolverines got a quick start again Crandon scoring seven runs in the first 3 innings. and cruised to a 10-6 victory. Sara Bublitz got the win for Crivitz giving up just three hits in six innings of work. Bublitz also led the Wolverinesat the plate going 2 for 3. Saige Nelson, Jas Zach, Sienna Gunns, Maggie Swanson and Emily Bublitz each collected one hit for Crivitz.

The wolverines had a much harder time with the Hodags going a combined 3 for 16 against Rhinelander pitcher Molly Wagner.

Brooke McFadden led the way for Crivitz with a double in two trips to the plate. Kieran Gribbon and Kailee Golla each hit a single. Riley Muelles took the loss giving up six hits.
