Peshtigo Takes Perfect Record To State

Issue Date: May 31, 2018

Jacobson is Sectional Medalist; Wagner Qualifies in 3rd Place

After a couple of years of coming up just short, the Peshtigo Bulldogs finally got over the hill, advancing to state competition at University Ridge in Madison for the first time in school history.

Peshtigo fired a 339 as a team to move on to state, led by senior Bryce Jacobson, who went to University Ridge as an individual qualifier last season.

"The team got it done," Jacobson said after the Division II Sectional in Ripon. "This team is the best by working hard at every practice and taking time on weekends to practice. It really shows."

After Jacobson, Peshtigo's best score was Trent Carriveau's 85. Ty Davis carded an 88, Jordan Carvenough had an 89 and Tyler Lund shot a 92.

"I'm so proud of my team," Carriveau said. "We played well all year and this added to the resume. Our team goal was to make it to state and we did it."

Lund said he personally needs to hit the ball better off the tee to improve his score in Madison, but said, "Our team finally got to where we wanted and for that I'm very proud. Everyone played well today and got us to Madison, and we will do the best we can to turn it up a notch for the state tournament and compete for a title."

Bulldogs coach Kyle Cheney said "every player had a hand in this championship," adding that "we kept our composure through the tough holes and finished strong in grinding out a team win."

The state championship will take place on June 4 and 5. The Bulldogs won't be the only players from DII there, as Marinette's Matt Wagner moved on with a tie for the third-best score of the day at 79.

"Matt played well," Marinette Coach Cary Waloway said. "He didn't make any big mistakes and hit a lot of greens. His score could have been a lot lower if he made a few putts."

"I started out really good on the front," Wagner said, referencing the mid-90s heat in Ripon. "I think the heat got to me a little bit but I think I shot a good enough score."

Ty Kretz, who has consistently shot in the high 70s and low 80s this year, carded an 87 in his freshman sectional debut. Wes Knutson shot a 94 and Chas Ferm had a 105. Marinette's 365 team score was tied for eighth in the field. The top two teams advanced.

"We did fine and then we had troubles," Waloway said. "It's disappointing. I'm sure they're all disappointed. They just didn't play as well as they did yesterday in a practice round.

Oconto was 11th as a team with a 391. Andrew Westphal shot an 86, Spencer Leary finished strong for a 94, Will Sherman shot a 97 and Jacob Delzer had a counting score with 114 that was hurt by a 20 on hole 13 after a good front nine. Dawson Dionne had a 123.

Oconto Falls' Ryan Morris, an individual qualifier, shot a 96 in his final high school match.

Winneconne was the other team to advance to state, beating Waupaca in a playoff hole after both shot scores of 347.

Casper and Bauer Set D-3 State Tee Times

Two familiar M&O Conference faces will be heading to state after Tuesday's Marathon sectional.

Coleman's Kasey Casper and Crivitz's Shane Bauer each qualified as individuals for state, which will be held at University Ridge in Madison on June 4 and 5.

Casper tied for third in the field at 79, while Bauer shot an 80. Casper's teammate Cody Van Hoff was just a stroke away from making it, as he fired an 81 that put him in sixth overall.

This will be Casper's third trip to state as just a junior.

"It's an amazing feeling to be back at state for my third time," Casper said. "My putting was not too sharp today but my second shots saved me."

In the 90-degree weather in Marathon, Bauer had to battle for his first state appearance in four years.

"Mentally and physically, these 18 holes were the hardest I've ever had to play," Bauer said. "Battling in 90-degre weather with a lot of hills, I battled through it to shoot 80 and luckily advanced."

The top two teams from each sectional advance, meaning third-place Coleman was left on the outside looking in with their 359 team score.

Behind Casper and Van Hoff were Ryan Terp with 98, Cameron Zirbel with 101 and Peyton Deering's 116.

Crivitz was seventh of 11 teams with 400. Eli Lawrence finished with 94, Travis Giese had 112 and both Mason Marvin and Abby Barley carded 114s.

Florence shot a 423. Their best score came form Matt Dishaw, who shot a 92. Beyond Dishaw, Tommy Podner had a 100, Evan Beaster shot a 111, Matt Johnson shot a 120 and Logan Doda finished at 151.

St. Thomas Aquinas Academy did not qualify for a team score, but Christian Hornick shot a 95, Tyler Stuart had a 98 and Alex Powers shot a 107.

Wabeno/Laona's Grace Warner's 86 was the best score of any golfer that qualified as an individual for sectionals, but it missed the cut for state. Pembine's Wyatt Marcy shot a 91 and Wausaukee's Cooper Rollo shot a 139.

Escanaba Edges

Menominee for

GNC Golf Title

Menominee was just a stroke short of the Great Northern Conference title on Thursday, as Escanaba lifted the trophy.

The Maroons' 410 team score was barely beaten by Escanaba's 411.

Menominee's Arikah Bellisle shot a 97, Josie Hofer had a 101, Emma Hofer shot a 105 and Olivia Badker finished with 108.

Conrad Berger shot a 157 on the boys' side, which was also won by Escanaba.
