The Truth About The Wetlands Permit:
Although the media will undoubtedly be utilized by Aquila to fuel the fire of anxiety and foster the appearance that they have been granted all the necessary permits to begin construction of the proposed metallic sulfide mine on the banks of the Menominee River in Michigan, there is nothing that could be farther from the truth.
The Wetlands Permit has been "issued" with a myriad of accompanying conditions. In other words, there are many hoops that Aquila will have to jump through before the permit is considered "effective" and mining could actually begin. There are numerous issues that were not addressed during the application process that will materialize in the future.
The Coalition to SAVE the Menominee River, Inc. was formed in opposition to the proposed mine, and it has been in preparation for this day since its charter was formed. Legal strategies have already been developed that could take years to unfold.
People who love our land and water"including our indigenous brothers and sisters"and those who have raised their children here and want to see their grandchildren grow up in this area, are the same people who will stand firm in total opposition to the proposed Aquila mine.
This certainly is not the end of our opposition; it is the resurrection of government "of the people, for the people, and by the people." We stand united with organizations all across the State of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan, and we are in it for the long haul.
