Marinette Win Second M&M Showdown of the Season

Issue Date: July 12, 2018

Marinette Lights Up Scoreboard in M&M Showdown

The Marinette Post 39 Legion boys took on cross town rival Menominee Post 146 on July fourth in Marinette and showed the fans a little fireworks before the big show later that evening, taking the win 7-1.

Were it not for the efforts of Marinette mound ace Matt Eldredge the game may not have been such a run away. Eldredge's day was highlighted by a one hit performance. He gave up a mere one earned run while walking just two on his way to a seven inning win. He also struck out seven.

But it wasn't just Eldregde out there, he had some excellent defense backing him up. Minus one run posted by the Red Wave in the seven by Andrew Schroder the Menominee found there was a wall at second base that would allow no pass.

Marinette wasted no time in getting way ahead in this match up as a six run first inning helped to build the momentum needed to cruise to a victory.

Trevor Bloch led off the opening effort for Marinette by reaching off an error. Adam Wahl was hit by a pitch and Matt Osterberg loaded the bases with a walk. Nick Daye hit a single for the first RBI while Wahl went home on a wild pitch during Rylie Nelson's at bat.

Jack Farley swatted a single to right field for another run while Riley Reif posted an RBI off a single to right field.

Marinette posted a single run over the second inning when Wahl singled and later scored off a Nelson sacrifice fly to right field, giving Marinette the 7-0 lead.

The seventh inning gave the Red Wave a moment to shine and they found a way to make sure they wouldn't get shut out of making a score board appearance thanks to Schroeder's walk and Alex Hansen's RBI single to right field.

At the plate Marinette was led by Reif with a two for three showing with an RBI. Wahl was one for two with two runs whelk Bloch went one for two with one run.

Matthew Delfosse took the loss allowing three hits, one earned run and one walk while striking out five over his five innings.

Marinette Battles Sheboygan For Narrow Victories

The Marinette Legion Post 39 boys traveled to Sheboygan Tuesday July 3rd for a double header showdown that saw them win game one 15-14 and game two 9-8.

Both games turned into shootouts with scores closer to a football game than a diamond match up.

Sheboygan got things started in game one by securing a first inning run off a Brent Widder double to right field. They improved that mark over the third inning when Nick Akstulewicz singled to lead off. Ben Souik followed with a bunt and base while Sal Parra reached on a fielders choice. Trey Klessing knocked a run in over the third when he single to left while Anthony Cull-Alverez walked for another RBI. Nathen Hendrikse bunted for a run to wrap up the third inning.

Marinette responded over the third inning with a five run push to help narrow the lead.

Adam Wahl led off with a base off an error followed by Osterberg who also made it to first off an error. Nick Daye loaded the bases after he was struck by a Sheboygan pitch. With a prime opportunity in front of him Marinette's Jack Farley took advantage of the situation, slamming a two RBI double to right field. Before the inning could be wrapped up by Sheboygan Trevor Bloch drummed up a little magic as well sending a shot to center field to bring home two Marinette runners bringing the score to 6-5 with Sheboygan at the head.

Sheboygan posted one run over the fourth off a Parra RBI double and increased the lead over the fifth thanks to a Widder RBI single to left field.

But Marinette wasn't ready to just lay down and let the status quo sit. Their fifth inning turned the game right on its head as the bats finally found their stride.

Nick Daye led off with a walk while Nelson followed with another. Jack Farley walked to load the bases. Reif recorded an RBI while Bloch followed with a another RBI. Both Wahl and Osterberg batted in a runner each. Daye returned to the plate in the fifth for a two RBI single while Farley continued his success at the plate with a two RBI single to center field. The big inning gave Marinette the lead 13-8.

Sheboygan posted four more runs in the sixth to threaten but a seventh inning Home run off the bat of Wahl would prove to be the back breaker along with the game winning run off Reif's RBI single that brought home Daye.

Trey Bretl took the mound win for Marinette allowing nine hits, eight earned runs, and seven walks while striking out four.

Ethan Schreg was saddled with the loss giving up four hits, seven runs (three earned) and five walks while striking out two.

Farley led the way at the plate for Marinette with a three for four showing with two runs and four RBIs. Nelson was two for four with one run while Reif was one for three with one run and two RBIs.

Widder led the Sheboygan guys with a three for four showing with two RBIs.

Game two wasn't all that different. Sure the score, which ended at 9-8 in favor of Marinette, wasn't nearly as high as game one but the bats that warmed up in game one seem to have found their way into the second match up.

Sheboygan got a good start in the second game as Harry Feinberg led off with a single. Dylan Lindow followed with a double and the two skirted home off a Widder double to deep center.

Souik knocked in one more over the first thanks to a deep hit ball to left field that allowed Widder to make his way to the plate off the tag up for the 3-0 lead.

Marinette wasn't going to let Sheboygan start to pull away in this one as Bretl walked for a base and went home off a Wall single to left field. Wahl made it to the plate thanks to a Daye single to left for the 3-2 early readout.

Marinette tied up during the second off a Kyler Kruse run which was reigned in by a Wall single.

Sheboygan's Akstulewicz slammed a two RBI double over the third and went home for the third run of the inning thanks to a Parra single to right field. After one run during the top of the fourth Sheboygan held the lead 7-2.

Marinette's Fayta scored a run during the fourth inning when he reached after being hit by a pitch and went home when Wahl slugged a single to left.

Jack Farley chipped away at the lead during the fifth scoring off his single thanks to an error. After the Farley run Marinette trailed 8-5.

It all boiled down to the seventh as Marinette needed four runs to post the win. They did just that as Rylie Nelson led off with a walk to get things started. Farley singled next followed by Fayta with an RBI double. Bretl single for two more RBIs while Bloch went home off an error for the winning run.

At the plate Marinette was led by Wall who was three for four with three RBIs. Farley was two for four at the plate with two runs while Fayta was one for two with two runs and an RBI.

Sheboygan's Widder was three for four with two runs and two RBIs.

Fayta took the mound win for Marinette striking out one while allowing five hits, two earned runs and one walk.

Souik took the loss allowing three hits, four earned runs and five walks while striking out two.

Marinette Splits DH with Wausau; Osterberg Throws No-Hitter

The Marinette Legion Baseball team split a double header with home field Wausau Saturday evening winning the first match up 11-0 and falling in the second 8-7.

The first game was all about what was coming off the mound. That being a gem of a game by mound ace Matt Osterberg who held the Wausau boys away from the plate in the no-hitter shutout. Osterberg ended the game with 13 strikeouts.

Trevor Bloch got things going in the third by doubling. Bretl followed up with an RBI double while Daye slapped a RBI single.

After a three run third and a two run second the Marinette boys posted three final runs in sixth to wrap things up.

Carter Trey took the loss allowing four hits, three earned runs and three walks while striking out three.

At the plate Marinette's Bloch was three for three while Daye was two for three. Bretl was two for four.

Game two saw Marinette slip as the Wausau boys overcame a bad start in the first game to win 8-7.

Wausau was first on the board with a two run first inning but Marinette was quick to respond taking two in the second and one more in the third..

Marinette improved the lead to 5-2 during the fifth inning but Was returned fire scoring three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings for the win.

Taking the loss on the mound for the Marinette boys was Kyler Kruse who allowed two hits, three earned runs and two walks.

At the plate Marinette's Rylie Nelson and Osterberg were both two for three while Bretl, Farley and Daye were all two for four.

Menominee and Negaunee Split DH

The Menominee Red Wave hosted the Negaunee Legion team last Tuesday night for a double header that saw Menominee win the first game 3-2 before falling in the second game 5-2.

During Game one Menominee looked to post some early runs which they did, going up 3-0 after the second inning. Negaunee got two in the seventh, ending the game with the win in the Red Waves' hands.

Bryce Tharp took the win on the mound for Menominee allowing seven hits, two runs, two walks and six strikeouts.

Tanner Peterson took the loss giving up two hits, three runs and five walks while striking out three.

At the plate Menominee's Keagan Monroe was two for two.

Game two saw Negaunee pick up the slack and post a hard fought 5-2 win.

During the second match up Negaunee slammed the plate with four first inning runs while holding Menominee to one run in the fourth and one in the sixth.

Jason Janquardt took the loss allowing six hits, five runs and no walks while striking out five.

James Bender took the win giving up three hits, two runs and five walks while handing out seven strike outs.

Marinette Falls to Powerful GB Southwest

The Marinette Legion Post 39 boys had their hands full with the Green Bay SouthWest Legion team Tuesday night as the visiting GB boys held the lead throughout for the 9-5 victory.

GB's J.T Bolssen got thing started with a single and came home off an Ian Way RBI double. Southwest scored a second run in the third inning when Cole Milton hit a single to right to bring in Blossen for the 2-0 lead.

But it was the top of the fourth that would be an absolute back breaker for the Marinette boys as seven Southwest runs came flying across the plate.

Marinette did get the gears churning in the later goings of the game as one run crossed in the fifth as Mason Risner went home off a Nick Date sacrifice fly. Four more crossed in during the sixth but that was it as the Marinette boys fell short of capturing the lead.

Matt Eldredge who battled through a tough night took the loss on the mound for Marinette. He allowed six hits, nine runs (five earned) and three walks while striking out five.

Ian Way took the win with six strikeouts to his name. He gave up five hits, three runs (two earned) and three walks.

At the plate Marinette's Riley Reid was two for two while Daye wad one for three with four RBIs.

Menominee Red Wave Competes in Tough Antigo Tournament

The Menominee Red Wave dropped its first game of the Antigo tournament to Ashwaubenon.

After going ahead 1-0 in the top of the first, Menominee allowed three runs in the bottom half of the inning and one in the second. They got within two in the top of the sixth, but Ashwaubenon countered with four of its own.

Jason Janquart took the loss for his seven-hit, six-walk five innings. He struck out four.

Kyle Struve and Matthew Delfosse were each 2-for-3 for the Wave. Against Kewaunee County, Menominee got back on track, but it took 10 innings to do so. Kewaunee County took a 4-0 lead after five innings, but the Wave hadn't gotten going on offense yet. After three runs in the sixth to get within one, the Wave tied it up in the seventh. It took an extra frame, but Menominee won it in the 10th.

Delfosse's two scoreless innings in relief earned him the win. He struck out three and allowed two baserunners.

Alex Hanson had a 3-for-5 night at the plate with a run and an RBI.

The final two games of the tournament did not go Menominee's way.

Against Antigo, Delfosse took the loss. In five innings, he allowed five runs on nine hits, as Antigo scored three in the third and two in the fifth to get the 5-2 win.

Hanson and Keagan Monroe each had two hits in the game. Hanson scored a run and batted in the other Menominee run.

Wisconsin Rapids scored 10 runs in the second inning of the Wave's next game, winning 12-2.

Kyle Struve never found his groove in the game, allowing all 12 runs on 12 hits and five walks in four innings.

The Wave couldn't create the offense to match the Rapids bats.
