M&M Area In Top 10 For Small Business Revolution

Issue Date: December 13, 2018

Members of the group spearheading the My Marinette/ Menominee Small Business Revolution Challenge received the exciting news on Tuesday, Dec. 11 that they are in the top 10 in a nationwide challenge to win $500,000 to help make over and revitalize the Main Street business areas of the M&M Twin Cities of Marinette and Menominee. There were over 112,000 entries nationwide. Announcement that the M&M area had been included in the Top 20 nationwide was made by Small Business Revolution producers a month ago.

Being selected for the top 10 means that directors of the Hulu Small Business Revolution Show on Hulu will be visiting the area in January to meet community leaders and business owners in person and view the areas being considered for the top award. In addition to the cash, which could equate to $250,000 for each city's downtown, the show's producers would provide some significant technical advice on the most effective use for the money.

The show's producers advise that throughout January they will be calling on communities in the Top 10 and urged them to rally and get active on social media, " sharing all the things you love about your town!"

Immediately after being notified that they had made the exclusive top 10 list, leaders of the local challenge group set up a meeting for 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 12 in the UWGB-Marinette Campus cafeteria.

They have invited all M&M area businesses and organizations to participate, but stressed that anyone planning to attend the meeting must first watch at least at least one of the dozen episodes of the Small Business Revolution-Main Street program on Hulu. By typing "Small Business Revolution" into the search engine, episodes can be watched on any device at any time.

A Marinette Menominee Area Chamber of Commerce news release issued Tuesday, Dec. 11 declared, "We have no time to waste, and everyone needs to get up to speed. We must be ready and knowledgeable when the advance team visits."

Small business owners are urged to inform all staff members about the program, progress of the local communities, and what is at stake.

"Our team will be on the road all month long, coming to meet all of you and learning more about each town and its small businesses, and how they would benefit from our Main Street revitalization," a news release from the show's producers said. "This is the phase where we'll be calling on your communities to rally and get active on social media, sharing all the things you love about your town!

In mid-February they plan to announce the Top Five finalists. Those communities will be up for a week long public vote to see which should be featured in Season Four.

The public's choice is to be announced at the end of February. The producers say that's when the real work begins for the winning community. Small businesses will be invited to apply to be featured on the show and producers will begin that selection process. Filming for the series will run from March through August of 2019.

Contact people for the local Small Business Revolution group are Kim Brooks, of Rusty Wolfe Studios (kkbrooks@bellsouth.net), 615-804-9653, representing the Marinette Downtown Action Group of the M&M Area Chamber of Commerce, and Keith Killen, of Mighty Pet, (k-killen@new.rr.com), 715-587-2870, representing, Small Business Rising of the Menominee Downtown Business Association. The Small Business Revolution is a TV show on Hulu that goes into small towns and revitalizes their main streets.

Melissa Ebsch, Tourism Director for the City and County of Marinette, has been working with the group. She urged anyone who wants to help to "...share your story online, take a picture of a business place with yourself on it, and tell what you love about the community, what you look forward to or what you enjoy, and post it with the hash tag " #mymarinettemenominee."

She added that anyone who wants to help could also visit the website "https://www.deluxe.com/small-business-revolution," and/or connect with them on Facebook @smallbizrev, Instagram smallbusinessrevolution or seek them on Twitter and LinkedIn.
