Athelstane Board Rejects Firefighter Pay Increase
Issue Date: January 31, 2019
It was incorrectly reported in the Jan. 23 issue of the Peshtigo Times that members of Athelstane Fire Department would be getting a raise from $10 to $15 per hour for time spent at fire scenes. That proposal was in fact rejected by the town board at its meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 8.
At their last meeting, members of the Athelstane Fire Department had voted to change their by-laws to increase the on-scene pay to $15 per hour. However, to become effective, that bi-law change would have to be approved by Athelstane Town Board, and it was not.
When the subject came up at the Jan. 8 Town Board meeting Supervisor Harold Tesch said he had checked with other fire departments in the area. He found that two departments are paid $10 per hour and one department gets paid minimum wage for on-scene calls. Tesch moved to not accept the Fire Department's proposed by-law change to increase the on-scene pay to $15 per hour and instead keep the on-scene pay at $10 per hour. That motion was seconded by David Jose and all board members voted aye, so the proposed by-law change that would have brought a pay raise for firefighters will not take place.
