Wausaukee/Gillett Win Regional Titles; Face off Thursday in Sectional Semis

Issue Date: February 28, 2019

Wasuakee Fights Back Niagara in Close Regional Final Victory

The Wausaukee Ranger girls had a battle on their hands Saturday afternoon as they faced off with conference rival Niagara in a Regional Final game, which saw the hard fighting Rangers victorious on their home court 40-31.

It certainly wasn't a scoring festival but the Rangers made due with what they could muster, employing great defense to hold back the threatening Badgers.

Niagara kept the scores coming but found themselves behind at the intermission 20-15.

Another 16 points by the Badgers over the second would leave therm still in the dust due to a second 20 point half by the Rangers.

Taking the lead for the Rangers and all other scorers was Wausaukee's Courtney Messar who posted a game leading 14 points. Kalyn Schlies followed her up with 13 points while Madelyn Schlies rounded off the top scorers with six points.

Niagara was led by a combined effort from Jessica Oratch and Cassandra Gill who both got eight points each.

Gillett Defeats Oneida Nation

The Gillett Tigers secured a Regional Final victory over the Oneida Nation Thunderhawks Monday night, 58-46 in Oneida.

Sidney Young led the way for the Tigers with 15 points while Aubrey DeBauch added 10 points. Grace Wicvkman got 10 points.

Wolverines Lose Grip in Second Half of Regional Final

The Crivitz Wolverines took on the Crandon Cardinals Monday night in Crandon and found themselves on the wrong end of the final verdict 53-44.

Though they were saddled with the loss the game started out close and remained that way till the half. At the intermission the Cardinals and Wolverines were locked up at 22-22.

During the Wolverines first half Sianna Guns and Chloe Gruszynski were both on target, combining for 16 points.

The Cardinals saw their lead develop over the second half thanks to some great shooting by Micasslyn Crawford who fired in a triple helping of treys. Teammate Lindsay Littleton added nine second half points.

The Wolverines were led by the efforts of Gruszynski who posted 16 on the night and Guns who added on 13 points. Emalee Johnsen posted 10 points.

Crandon's Littleton took top scoring honors with 18 points while Tabitha Rakas got 14. Crawford chipped in 13.

Peshtigo's Season Ends With Loss to No. 2-Seed Amherst

The Peshtigo Bulldogs' season came to an end with a 56-29 loss to sectional No. 2 seed Amherst on Saturday.

The Bulldogs didn't start the way they would have liked, falling behind 33-5 by the time the clock hit triple zeroes in the first half.

"The two things that we struggled all year with, shooting and rebounding, were big factors in the first half. They were a very good team, but in order to stay with them, we were probably going to have to be at our best in both and we struggled in both," Peshtigo coach Bruce Parkovich said. "The first half was a half that we certainly didn't want to foresee, but they started a 6-3 and a couple 5-11 girls. It just seemed like every shot they missed, they got that second shot and put it up. We just struggled shooting against them."

Amherst played a tough brand of defense, using its height in a man-to-man defense to stymie the Peshtigo offense.

"They do it very well. They force you to the baseline and when we dribble down there, the girls are waiting for you down there," Parkovich said. We probably for the first time saw a different type of defense we hadn't seen before."

Peshtigo was much better in the second half, scoring 24 points.

"We regrouped at halftime and said let's give this our best foot forward and I thought we really played well in the second half," Parkovich said. Freshman Lianna Baxter had all five Peshtigo points in the first half and 11 in the second.

"As a freshman, you don't know how she's going to react and going to compete but she certainly brought her A-game for many games at both ends of the floor," Parkovich said. "We grew from that to having other people help contribute to our success."

Grace Wickman had four to be the second-leading scorer for Peshtigo.

Eight players scored for Amherst, though none had more than 10.

Wausaukee Gets Post-Season Rolling With Win

The Wausaukee Ranger girls started their 2019 post season much with a solid 68-40 win over the visiting Florence Bobcats.

It didn't take long for one of the Rangers to find a considerable opening in the defense, Kaelyn Schlies was the Ranger and she exploited the mismatch she had found for an overwhelming 17 first half points.

Her effort helped the Rangers build a massive 41-20 lead at the half. The Bobcats would struggle to make it to forty.

By games end K. Schlies was the games leading scorer with 25 points. Madelyn Schlies who followed up K. Schlies amassed 13 points during the game. Courtney Messar help gave her team the push they needed to stay way out ahead with 11 points.

Jordyn Springer led the way for the Bobcats with 14 points while Madison Neuens pitched in 10 points. Cassie Larson added nine on the night.

Gillett Keeps On Tournament Trail With Win Over Laona/Wabeno

The Laona/Wabeno Rabels were unable to quell the Gillett Tigers Friday night when they fell to the Tigers 54-47.

Karissa Schaal led all scorers in the Gillett victory with 15 points while Aubrey DeBauch added 11 to the total. Gillett's Franti also chipped in 11 points.

Laona/Wabeno was led by Higgins with 13 points and Tinsman with 11. Harris added 10 to the final total.

Wolverines Post Hard Fought Regional Win Over Manawa

The Manama Wolves were a match for the Wolverines of Crivitz as they faced off in the 2019 regional round of the WIAA playoffs.

It turns out that Crivitz is the better team, as the hard fighting Wolverines came away with a 63-55 victory over the visiting Wolves.

Chloe Gruszynski made sure her Wolverines wouldn't be denied a victory with a superlative effort on the night. She started the game with 14 first half points before firing off an additional 15 second half points. She was the games top scorer with 29 points.

Following Gruszynski on the score sheets was Emalee Johnsen with 12 points and Sianna Guns with 10. Bailey Bemis, Kieren Gribben and Morgan VanLanen all added four points each.

Manawa was led by Laynie Bessette with 24 points and Kellyn Kaczorwski with eight points.

Niagara Wins First Round Regional Match

The Niagara Badgers advanced themselves to the Regional finals in Wausaukee with a home court win over the Elcho Hornets Friday night 46-40.

The close victory was highlighted by a great effort by Niagara's Jessica Oratch who fired in 15 points to lead her Badgers. Cailin Hagerty also did her part in the victory with 10 points. Cassie Gill and Jaida Maki both chipped in six points each.

Elcho's Slowik was the games top performer with 22 points. Teammate Ansbach got six.

Maroons Give Back Early Lead, Fall to Marquette

Menominee's trip up to Lake Superior didn't end as planned on Thursday.

The Maroons fell to Marquette 55-44 despite taking an early lead. The Maroons led 15-8 after one quarter and 24-21 at the half, but Marquette overcame the deficit in the second half with a hot-shooting fourth quarter.

By the end of the third quarter, the hosts had taken a 36-35 lead, which they extended in the fourth.

Marquette's Avery Ledy topped all scorers with 22 points. Marquette is undefeated in conference play.

Menominee got 16 from Emma Anderson, 11 from Erin Barrette and nine courtesy of Jenna Nolde.
