Mullard Honored As Legionnaire Of Year

Issue Date: May 29, 2019

Elmer Mullard, an active and involved member of Loomis American Legion Post 476 for more than half a century, has been chosen as it's 2019 Legionnaire of the Year by Marinette County Council of the American Legion.

He will be honored at the annual Commander's Dinner at Newingham's Supper Club in Wausaukee on Saturday, June 15. County Commander Rodger French, of Pembine, expressed hope that there will be at least one member present from each of Marinette County's 11 American Legion posts. He said either the state Legion Commander or one of the four state vice commanders will be on hand as a guest speaker.

Mullard, who turned 78 in January, spent much of his life living and working on the family farm between Crivitz and Loomis. He joined the Loomis Legion post in 1967, two years after being discharged from the Army in 1965. He has remained an active member there despite moving to Wallace, Mich. in 2001, after marrying Janet, who now has been his wife for 17 years.

Mullard has held one or more post officer positions as either commander, chaplain or adjutant for 39 of the 52 years that he has served with Loomis Legion Post 476, and laughs that one year he held all three of those positions at the same time and was Finance Officer besides. He also served for a time as vice commander of the Marinette County Council of the American Legion and is a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).

He is pleased about a number of Legion projects he helped accomplish over the years. Among those that quickly came to mind were getting their post involved in fund raising to support Badger Boys State, getting a memorial built at the Town of Lake Town Hall in Loomis, and getting an honor guard established, complete with M1 rifles, to conduct honor guard ceremonies at funerals and Memorial Day and other civic events.

Despite living in Wallace now, he attends Loomis Legion meetings regularly and participates in their events. For the past seven years he has been volunteering at least once a week at the Oscar G. Johnson Veterans Hospital in Iron Mountain, Mich.

Mullard said Memorial Day weekend was particularly busy for him. On Sunday, May 26, he and the other Loomis Post honor guard members started their day at 9 .m. with a Memorial Service at Walsh. They went from there to McAllister Lutheran Church, then on to Tabor Cemetery, St. Edward's Cemetery, Winesville Cemetery, and Porterfield Lutheran Church and then to the Town of Lake Hall for a Memorial Service at 11:50 a.m. followed by a luncheon put on by the American Legion Auxiliary.

On Monday, May 27 he was at the VA Hospital in Iron Mountain for his regular volunteer duty, and on Tuesday, May 28 he was back there to play bingo. As to the VA hospital, he said everyone he talks to there has good things to say about the facility.

Mullard graduated from Crivitz High School in 1959, and then worked on the family farm until he was drafted in October of 1963.

He had his basic training for the Army at Fort Hood, Ga., and then was assigned to Fort Eustace, Va. where worked as a "rigger," splicing cables for shipping and serving as the company carpenter.

The war was just getting started when he was sent to Vietnam in May of 1965. He was stationed at Cam Rahn Bay (late known as Cameron Bay) in Vietnam, working with a crew that spent most of its time unloading ships that were bringing in war supplies. Mullard said he was a "short timer" with only 6 months left to go in the Army when he was sent to Vietnam. Unlike many others a few months or even weeks later, his time in active duty was not extended. He was discharged on schedule, in October of 1965.

He then went back to work on the farm until 1978, when some back problems forced him to switch duties. From 1981 to 1990 he worked as a secure van driver with Betley Carrier Service of Amberg, which later became Lanter Carrier Systems, delivering checks and other items to destinations in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.

He next worked at Witt's Auto in Crivitz until 1997, followed by a three-year stint as a restaurant cook in Coleman and then at Frank Porth in Crivitz until he retired in 2006. Now, he said, he is so busy with everything else that he wouldn't have time for a job anyway. He and Janet are members of Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Wallace.

Marinette County Council officers in addition to French are Adjutant Gene Tessmer of Beecher and Chaplain Ron Kaempf of Peshtigo. The vice commander post is currently vacant.

French said all veterans and their spouses are invited to Commander's Dinner on June 15, whether members of the American Legion or not, but advance tickets are needed. Anyone wanting a ticket should contact a Legionnaire in their area.
