Niagara is Regional Champ; Drops Sectional Semi

Issue Date: June 6, 2019

Niagara Blanks

Laona/Wabeno in

Regional Final

The Niagara Badgers were not going to be denied a berth in the sectional finals last Wednesday when they took on the Laona/Wabeno Rebels who they defeated 12-0.

The Badgers got the wheels rolling on their hitting juggernaut during the second inning then Anthony Hansen walked to lead off. Ethan Sweig walked next. During Tistian DeJardin's at bat an error occurred and Hansen cut his way to the plate. Elliot Peterson swatted a single to bring in Sweig for the 2-0 second inning lead.

The Badger defense and bullpen were on point nearly all game long as only three Rebels were able to get Hansen's pitches past the defense.

The fourth inning saw the biggest hit of the game. DeJardin was the Badger at bat and he sent a shot over the left field fence for the home run.

After the home run the Rebels seem to have let loose on the slack as Niagara clubbed its way to a nine point lead.

Starting off the fifth inning scoring run was Landon Kaldor with a single. Dawson Lincoln brought him in on his single while Josh Weber reached base with a single. Hansen recorded an RBI with a single while Sweig hit home another run with a single to left field. To cap off the inning Niagara's Peterson swatted a two run double to give them eight runs. Peterson crossed home off an error.

The final inning of the game saw Niagara's Lincoln and Hansen cross home off of errors while Josh Weber made it home off a Sweig single.

The evening's winning pitcher was Niagara's Hansen who pitched his way to the win allowing only three hits and striking out four.

Bob Bauer took the loss for the Rebels allowing five hits and six runs while walking two. He struck out two over his four innings.

At the plate Niagara's Sweig was two of three with two runs and two RBIs. Peterson was two of four with one run and three RBIs while Weber finished the night two of four with two runs.

The Rebels' Carson Kalata was one of two while Conor Monnot and Serek Moravec were both one of three.

Niagara Sends Carousel

Of Vikings to Plate

in Sectional Loss

The Niagara Badgers just couldn't find a rhythm last Tuesday evening in Crivitz when they faced the Gibraltar/Washington Island Vikings for a sectional semi-final that saw the Vikings advance with a 9-2 final verdict.

All the action happened in the second inning in this WIAA playoff showdown with the Vikings taking the the big lead early thanks to a cartel moment that saw three bases loaded runs off walks and one run scored off a player hit by a pitch.

Starting the second inning for the Vikings was Brandon Stillman who walked. Griffen Reinhardt walked next while Luke Steebs reached first with a perfectly placed bunt down the first base line.

With bases loaded Spencer Krause watched as a fourth ball crossed the plate scoring the games first run off a walk. Dominic Krauel walked next for the 2-0 lead while Alex Laughlin made it three runs with another walk. Andrew Szakala was struck by a wild pitch for another run while Trevor Reinhardt hit a deep fly ball, giving Krauel and Laughlin time to tag up and get home.

G. Reinhardt singled for an RBI while Steebs made it a 9-0 game with his RBI single.

Niagara responded with a two run bottom half of the inning. Anthony Hansen doubled to lead off the inning while Tristan DeJardin also doubled to place two runner on base. Elliot Peterson sent a shot to deep left field, scoring both runners. Unfortunately for the Badgers it would be their only runs of the evening.

After the seance the Badgers figured out a rhythm on the mound as only one more walk occurred over the remaining innings, but it was too late to make much of a difference.

During the third the Badgers saw Landon Kaldor reach first on a single to shallow left while the fourth saw the last Badger hit of the season come off the bat of Ethan Sweig who clubbed a single to right field.

Steebs took the win for the Vikings over his seven innings pitched, giving up five hits, two earned runs and one walk while striking out four.

Hansen was saddled with the loss giving up one hit, five earned runs and six walks while striking out three over his three and a third innings. Landon Kaldor pitched three and two thirds innings in relief for the Badgers as he allowed four hits, four earned runs and two walks while striking out one.

At the plate the Badgers' Peterson was one of two with two RBIs. DeJardin was one of three with a run while Kaldor finished the evening one of two.

The Vikings' Steebs was two of four with one run and one RBI. Spencer Krause was one of three with one run and one RBI while Laughlin was one of three with one run and one RBI.
