Peshtigo Athletes Picked For Post-Season Honors

Issue Date: June 20, 2019

Peshtigo's Nielson and Eick Picked as Packerland 1st Teamers Peshtigo's baseball season ended in sectionals, and the Bulldogs' strong season culminated in a handful of all-conference selections.

Nick Nielson was picked as a first-team pitcher.

"Nick is an absolute competitor," Peshtigo coach Neal Henrigillis said.

Nielson finished with an ERA of 1.51 and a .428 average at the plate. Henrigillis said if Nielson wasn't a first-team pitcher, he would've been a first-team outfielder.

Brandon Eick was selected as a first-team infielder. Eick hit .351 for the conference season batting in the four-hole.

"Brandon was back-to-back years first-team all-conference and one of the most highly regarded players in the conference," Henrigillis said. "He was an anchor in the middle of the order and delivered big hits while being one of the best hustle players I've ever coached. He epitomized what it meant to be a Peshtigo Bulldog baseball player."

Beyond that, Darren Dionne took a second-team pitcher spot and Travis Plym made a second-team infield spot.

Dionne was the Bulldogs' closer this season after a first-team season as a junior.

"Unfortunately, there can only be three first-team pitchers because I believe Darren and Nick were both worthy of the award but it's tough to get two pitchers from the same team on first team," Henrigillis said. "When it was time to go in, Darren came in and delivered, time after time."

Plym hit leadoff for the Bulldogs and "battled every at bat and set the table for the middle of the order and was a leader for our team," Henrigillis said. He hit .319 on the year.

Nolan Lemke was also a second-team utility man. He pitched and played the field on the season, covering five of nine positions for the Bulldogs. Henrigillis called him a "fantastic asset to the team."

Of the five, Nielson is the only one to return next season for the Bulldogs.

Oconto senior Bennett Frazer was a first team infielder and senior Zach Sherman was a first-team utility man. Sherman hit .398 in conference play this season.

Oconto junior Sean Durand was a second-team pitcher and senior Hayden Honish was a second-team infielder.

Bulldogs Dominate

Packerland GolfTeam:

Carriveau Claims

Top Spot

Peshtigo's boys' golf team may have missed out on state, but the Bulldogs dominated the Packerland Conference, taking four of the six spots on the all-conference first-team.

Trent Carriveau finished his senior year with Packerland player of the year honors.

"We are very proud of Trent this season," Peshtigo coach Jim Dufrane said of himself and co-coach Kyle Cheney. "He had a difficult stretch of golf in the middle of the season, but his hard work in practice showed our team how to work though difficult days and become an even stronger player when it mattered most at the end of the season."

Senior Ty Davis made the all-conference team to wrap up his career as well.

"He continued his season putting great effort into his golf game and it paid off with a first team selection this year," Dufrane said. "Ty is a good teammate and another of our positive influences on this team."

Sophomores Adam Bauman and Jordan Carvenough will return to lead the Bulldogs next year, returning as all-conference golfers.

On Carvenough, Dufrane shared a similar sentiment to that of Davis.

"Jordan is great for our team chemistry and is always around with a positive comment to his teammates when they need it," he said.

Along with Bauman, the Bulldogs should be back ready to defend their title next year. Of course, there's always JV players ready and waiting in the wings, like Bauman was a year ago.

"Adam was a JV player for Peshtigo last year and showed what hard work over the summer can do to help a golf game," Dufrane said. "Adam is a golfer who can't wait to learn more each and every practice. We can't wait to see how his game progresses by the 2020 season."

Oconto's Andrew Westphal was an all-Packerland first-teamer as well.

Peshtigo Softball Players

Claim Six All

Conference Spots

Peshtigo had four second-team softball players and two honorable mentions. Grace Wickman, Kennedy Chmela, Mattie LaCoursiere and McKenna Evancheck were all second-teamers.

Honorable mention Karli Cahill led the team with the bat, however. She finished the year with a .487 average, best on the team. Coach Tom Christensen called her the most improved player on the team.

"She was a great add to our ball team this year as a sophomore," Christensen said.

She wasn't alone in squaring up the ball.

Chmela, a junior, offered a surge of power in the middle of the Peshtigo lineup, hitting for a .416 average on the year.

"Kennedy came through with the bat," Christensen said. "Good defensive player, well-deserved for sure."

Junior Grace Meyers was also an honorable mention, serving as the team's main pitcher in her first year in the role.

Sophomore Grace Wickman, who Christensen said filled in well on the mound and contributed in other areas as well, was a second-teamer.

LaCoursiere led off as a junior and was a "nice surprise for the Bulldogs," with Evancheck, a junior, an improved player as well, Christensen said.

Oconto's Morgan Durand was a unanimous first-team infielder, Maggie Sohrweide was a first-teamer in the infield as a freshman and Ellen Sohrweide was first-team in the outfield. Durand and Ellen Sohrweide were seniors.

The senior duo hit .545 and .417 on the season, respectively. Durand's average led the conference by .23 points.

On the second team for Oconto were Kalista Susa, a sophomore pitcher, sophomore catcher Hallie Wusterbarth and junior infielder Hannah Wusterbarth.

Hallie Wusterbarth hit .415 on the season to finish in the top 15 of the conference.

Various area athletes also received academic and other awards. Oconto's Andrew Ramage and Mara Allen received outstanding achievement awards for maintaining a 3.9 GPA, earning at least seven athletic letters and competing as a three-sport athlete in their senior year.

Oconto's Bennett Frazer, Hayden Honish, Morgan Durand and Ellen Sohrweide were each scholar athletes for compiling a 3.0 GPA and earning four varsity athletes over their four years in school.

Reid Marquardt, Max Rauch, Sidney Gullicksen and Gabby Perry were named Packerland Conference scholar athletes for Peshtigo.
