Bulldogs Take Down Blue Devils in Packerland Finale; Honor Coach Warren Howard

It wasn't the closest wrestling match ever, but Thursday was as perfect a night as the Peshtigo Bulldogs could have asked for.

The Bulldogs beat Oconto 30-0, won both live matches by pin and honored longtime head coach Warren Howard in an eventful evening.

The wrestling that did happen was as good a tribute to Howard's 21 years at the helm of Bulldog wrestling as possible, with 145-pounder Kyle Rupert pinning Owen Hansen in 3 minutes, 52 seconds and Kody Klimek pinning Aiden Diaz in 23 seconds at 285 to end the day with a 30-0 team win.

Klimek's win also ensured that he will finish the season undefeated in the Packerland Conference and top his weight class as an all-conference wrestler. With a win, Diaz would have earned the spot.

"He knew this win was all-conference," Peshtigo coach Josh Greetan said of Klimek. "He's beaten everybody in the conference and for a wrestler coming a long way in his career, it's a big accomplishment to win all-conference and it was nice to see that."

The other match was on the other end of the spectrum, with two relatively inexperienced wrestlers on the mat.

"It was an even match, but I feel that our guy just comes in every day and practices hard. First-year wrestler, their guy's a first-year wrestler, so it was good to see us come away with a victory," Greetan said, adding that Rupert knowing his opponent might have played into some early-match jitters. "They all look on the computer now and they see the other kids' records, so I think that got into his head where it's "I can't lose this one.' Once he got the nerves out, then he opened up and was looking good."

Peshtigo also got forfeit wins on the day from Jon LaForce (106), Radwa Farghali (132) and Mitchel Peters (160).

The other big event of the night was the team honoring Warren Howard, who had no idea that he was being honored until he stepped foot in the building.

"Just for them to take some time out of their lives to honor me, and it was a surprise. It truly was, until I started to count people. Usually, this year, we haven't had a lot of people and there were some wrestlers here I hadn't seen all year and I knew something was up," he said. "My wife, nobody said a word to me. I was set aback a little bit, I was a little bit nervous, to be honest with you. I usually don't get nervous because you get a bit of time to think about what you're going to say, but I just kind of winged it and I appreciate everybody showing up and enjoying this moment with me."

All of those wrestlers, many of which were talented wrestlers in their own right, came to honor a coach who has touched a lot of lives over 21 years as head coach in Peshtigo and 14 years as an assistant in Marinette. He continues to help out as a volunteer with Peshtigo's program.

"Warren is one of the best people I've ever met in my whole life," Greetan said. "He's my favorite coach of all time. He's more than just a coach, he's a father figure to me, and I would say anybody that's ever had experience with him, they would say the same words. I've never heard a bad word about Coach Howard and it got me a little bit emotional too, because he's always been there for me since I was a kid, so it was a great moment."
