Wolverines' Chloe Gruszynski is M&O MVP; Rangers' Madelyn Schlies is Best on Defense

Issue Date: April 8, 2020

Most Teams Represented In M&O All-Conference Picks

The Marinette & Oconto All-Conference selections have been made for the girls, and eight of the nine teams were represented. There are a total of three teams, the first and second team each have 5 nominees, while the honorable mention team has 6 spots. Crivitz and the Oneida Nation each grabbed 3 spots on the roster. Gillett, Niagara, Wausaukee and Coleman followed suit with 2 spots each. While STAA and Suring rounded out the selections with one each.

Oneida Nation who was undefeated in conference play had 3 girls recognized, M'Kenzey Ackley (junior-1st team), Malia Jacobs (senior-2nd team), and Sadie Schuman (senior-2nd team).

Crivitz, 13-3 tied for second in the M&O Conference this season also had 3 girls recognized for their effort this year: Chloe Gruzynski (senior-1st team/most outstanding player), Sianna Guns (senior-honorable mention), and Emalee Johnsen (senior-honorable mention). Gruzynski led the Wolverines with 20.5 points per game with Johnsen averaging 9.8 and Guns following closely with 8.6. Guns led Crivitz in rebounds per game with 8.5, Johnsen grabbed 6.8, and Gruzynski was not far behind with 6.3. Gruzynski also lead the team with 4.2 assists per game and 5.6 steals per game. Head Coach Brett Meyers said during the playoff run that, "Sianna Guns is such a dynamic player we need her, when she's on the floor she does the work of three or four people." Gruszynski became Crivitz's High School highest scorer ever this year ending with a total of 1734 career points. Chloe also had highest points scored in the conference this season with 37, ending her career with 1734 points, 589 rebounds, 397 steals, and 371 assists. Gruszynski will be going on to play for St. Norbert College Women's basketball team.

Gillett, who tied with Crivitz for 2nd place in the M&O conference this year, had two juniors Aubrey DeBauch (junior-1st team) and Karissa Schaal (junior-1st team) picked to the 1st team this year. Shaal and DeBauch were aslo 4th and 5th in the M&O Conference scoring 17.8 (Schaal) and 15.1 (DeBauch). DeBauch also reached the 1,000 point mark this season. Head Coach Justin Daul said, "...when we spaced the floor and give Aubrey the space to work she's the most dominating player in the conference in my mind, making a double double in almost every game this year." Daul also went on to say this about Schaal, "at the end of the game, we want the ball in her hands, she will make those clutch free throws for us."

Niagara, who made a strong run towards the end of the season, was taken out of the playoffs by M&O Conference Champions Onieda Nation Thunderhawks, garnered two all-conference spots with Jessica Oratch (senior-2nd team) and Alyssa Cretton (junior-honorable mention). Jessica Oratch led the Lady Badgers in scoring about 13 points per game with Cretton not far behind with an average of 11 points per game. Oratch also managed to wrangle around 9.5 rebounds per game while Allysa Cretton passed an average of 2.2 assists per game.

Wausaukee senior stars Madelyn Schlies and Kaelyn Schlies both made 2nd team honors. Madelyn Schlies who was chosen as the league's best defensive player averaged 12.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 5.6 steals per game. While teammate and cousin, averaged 12.8 points, 12.5 rebounds, 5.1 steals, 1.1 blocks, and 2 assists per game this season.

Coleman Cougars Cameron Compe, and Hailey Ziemer both recieved spots on the honorable mention team. Compe led the Cougars in scoring this year with an average of 10.8 points per game and also was able to average 7.4 rebounds per game. While Hailey Ziemer was next in line on the team scoring an average of 9.3 points per game.

St. Thomas Aquinas Academy's Lianna Baxter (sophomore-1st team) led the conference and her team in scoring this year with an average of 21.9 points per game. She also led the Lady Cavaliers in rebounds per game with 11.0, and assists per game with 2.5. Defensively Baxter was able to wrangle 2.9 steals per game and 6.4 blocks per game. Making her a player to watch in the next year. Her coach, who is also her father, Patrick Baxter had this to say about her, "Lianna is a very difficult matchup for opponents with her size and athletic ability. Lianna excels at driving to the basket and is very hard to guard in the post. Playing on a team with mostly freshman and facing many double teams and special defenses, she still managed to average nearly 22 points a game. Lianna is also a big difference maker on defense as the leading shot blocker in the state at 6.4 per game. Averaging double figures in rebounds was a big goal of hers this season and she really improved that aspect of her game. Her goal next year is to become a better three point shooter and part of that is getting stronger. Coaching her was an absolute pleasure as she was a very positive leader for our young team. Lianna is a hard worker who has committed to improving her skills in the off season and it shows."

Suring Eagle, girls basketball head coach Mitchell Woulf had this to say about his player Kylee Stelzer this year, "She's a tremendous leader, she comes in early and puts in the work. In a game against Lena after being in foul trouble early in the 2nd half was able to come in and make 2 clutch three pointers to help us get the win." Stelzer (junior-honorable mention) was able to grab a honorable mention from the coaches this year. Stelzer led the Eagles with an average 14.2 points per game and 2.5 assists per game.
