Lay Beams-Wooden beams from Sentinel Structures were set in place Monday and Tuesday for the foundation of the new Fish Viewing platform in Peshtigo. The wooden beams are slated to last over 50 years according to Andreas Rhude, president of Sentinel Structures. Sentinel Structures Beams Installed On Peshtigo Fish Viewing Walkway

Issue Date: September 23, 2020

The City of Peshtigo new fish viewing project is well under way according to acting Peshtigo Mayor Michael Behnke.

On Monday and Tuesday Sept. 21 and 22 workers were installing the wooden beams made by Sentinel Structures of Peshtigo. The structural glued laminated timber girders were lifted into place by several cranes that were brought in for the project.

The walkway over the river, just downstream of the dam, is using Peshtigo made materials. Sentinel Structures, Inc. manufactured laminated timber girders, deck panels, blocking, and rail posts for the 10 feet wide by 160 feet long walkway. The platform will be about 10 feet above the water level.

The first span of girders from the land were installed from the east bank of the river. The remaining two spans are being installed from the river bed itself. Overhead wires and reach from shore precluded installing them from the land.

The longest glued laminated girder is 60 feet and weighs nearly 4,000 pounds. Sentinel Structures uses suitably selected and kiln-dried Southern Pine lumber which is bonded with waterproof adhesive to make the large "shop grown" timbers. In all, 80,000 pounds of timber is utilized for the structure, nearly two semi-truckloads. The platform uses the existing concrete piers in the river which once supported a tunnel utilized by Badger Paper Mills.

Sentinel Structures designed the timber members and steel connections and obtained the steel from G & G Midwest of Coleman. The steel shapes were hot-dipped galvanized in Milwaukee by Acme Galvanizing.

UP Engineers and Architects of Marinette are designers and Immel Construction of Green Bay is the general contractor with Kevin Sobieck as foreman. BPM (Badger Paper) has been instrumental in the success of the project.

Former Peshtigo mayor Al Krizenesky, began the campaign for the platform many years ago. A committee was set up several years ago with elected officials and community members to help aid in the planning and sourcing grants to make the dream a reality. Mayor Cathi Malke continued the push for the platform and with her help the project became a reality. The project is slated to cost approximately $500,000, grants and donations have been used to pay for the project.

Acting Mayor Michael Behnke, reported that there is still time to purchase a brick tile for the fish viewing platform.

The donor wall portion of the project gives the community at large the opportunity to help complete the project by donating the brick tiles. Pricing for the brick tiles is $1,000 for an 18x24 tile, $500 for a 12x12 tile and $200 for a 4x6 tile. If anyone is interested call Peshtigo City Hall at 715 582 3041. Deadline for ordering the brick tiles is Friday Oct. 30.
