
Duane E. Philipps Issue Date: January 13, 2021 Duane E. Philipps "Dewey", 91, of Wallace, Mi., passed away Monday, Jan. 4, 2021 at Menominee Health Center.
Born Sept. 4, 1929 in Wagner, to the late Theodore and Irene (Wagner) Philipps, he attended school in Wagner until his family moved to Wallace, Mi. when he attended the Bethel School in Mellen Township and graduated from Stephenson High School in 1947. Upon graduation, he and his brother Gene worked together as Philipps' Brothers Forest Products and then began constructing homes. In 1959, they purchased Wallace Building Supply, where he worked as a master carpenter constructing many homes until his retirement. On Oct. 8, 1949, he married Lenore Salewsky at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Menominee, Mi. and they lived all their life in Wallace.
Active in community affairs, he was a charter member of Mellen Township Fire Department and served over 20 years including a term as fire chief. He also served on the Parish Council and Building and Grounds Committee of Precious Blood Church in Stephenson, Mi.
An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, including hunting trips to Wyoming, Colorado and North Dakota. He also loved time spent with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren along with large family gatherings, time at the family camp and gardening.
He is survived by his wife, Lenore of Wallace; four daughters, Linda (Steve) Crossman of Menominee, Susan (Bob) Gearhart of Powers, Mi., Laurie Philipps of Wallace and Mary (Wayne) Mills of Marinette; seven sons, Duane (Carol) Philipps of Deerbrook, Wi., Mathew Philipps of Vista, Ca. and Timothy (Jean) Philipps, Mark (Bonnie) Philipps, David Philipps, Thomas (Holly) Philipps and Christopher Philipps, all of Wallace; 15 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Joan (Ken) Kraus of Plymouth, Mi. and Gale Gadda of Wallace; three brothers, Pat Philipps and Dennis (Sue) Philipps, both of Wallace and Tony (Colleen) Philipps of Rives Junction, Mi.; a sister-in-law, Joy Salewsky of Menominee and many nieces and nephews.
Including his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Philipps; a son-in-law, Carl Theuerkauf, Jr.; a grandson, Daniel Theuerkauf; a granddaughter, Tammy Philipps; a great-granddaughter, Audrey Theuerkauf and two brothers, Gene and Ted "Curly" Philipps.
