Lena School To Seek Added Funding in April 6 Referendum

After a presentation from representatives of the financial advisor firm Quarles and Brady, Lena School Board on Wednesday, Jan. 13 voted unanimously in favor of resolutions authorizing them to ask voters to allow the the district to exceed revenue limits for five years "for non-recurring purposes" that are connected mainly with various repairs and upgrades for technology and buildings. The funding referendum ballot is to go to voters at the Spring election on Tuesday, April 6.

Administrator/Elementary Principal Ben Pytleski explained to the board that no expansion is planned. Wording of the referendum allows the board to use the money to maintain district facilities and fund general operations and maintenance, rather than asking taxpayers to fund specific individual facility project needs.

He said there are continued HVAC upgrades to consider, continued technology upgrades, repairs and upgrades for two outdoor facilities, and he expects to spend part of the funds for the much needed remodeling of locker rooms.

In the referendum resolution, voters are being asked to allow the board to adopt budgets that exceed the revenue limit specified in Wisconsin Statutes by $750,000 for the 2021-2022 school year; $800,000 for the 2022-2023 school year; $850,000 for the 2023-2024 school year; $900,000 for the 2024-2025 school year, $950,000 for the 2025-2026 school year, "for non-recurring purposes consisting of ongoing educational expenses and maintaining facilities."

Pytleski said he will be scheduling several informational meetings prior to the referendum.

In other matters, Pytleski said with students back in school for two weeks after Christmas vacation, Pytleski said numbers for Covid-19 remain low.

He reported CESA #8 had asked about any issues going on at the PAC meeting and stated that the substitute shortage is bad.

Pytleski had presented on the WOCO radio station on Tuesday, Jan. 12.

He told the board the traditional Spaghetti Supper will take place, but in a drive through format, and more information will be coming on that.

Board members present for the 6:30 p.m. meeting were Charles Imig, Timothy A. Goldschmidt, Ed Huberty, David McNurlen, and President Lori Dufek. Also on hand were Pytleski and High School Principal James Torzala.

A Financial Audit Summary by Kerber Rose had been on the agenda but was re-scheduled.

There was a referendum presentation by Quarles and Brady which included guidelines and ways the board can promote information for the referendum.

After the presentation the board unanimously approved resolutions authorizing the school district budget to exceed revenue limits for five years for non-recurring purposes and providing for a referendum election on the question of the approval of a resolution authorizing the school district budget to exceed revenue limit for five years for non-recurring purposes as presented.

The 2021-2022 School Calendar was approved as presented.

Open Enrollment spaces in the district were also approved as presented.

Junior High Girls Basketball coaching contracts for the 2020-2021 school year were approved as presented for William Whiting and Jeff Heimke.

Dufek completed the swearing in of Kevin Chang as the Student Representative for the Lena School Board.

Chang started his report by stating students are thankful that they still have sports at this time, and ended it by saying students seem to be adapting to wearing the masks.

He also reported on an upcoming ice cream sundae bar for Middle and High School students, with ice cream donated by a few parents.

-Star testing happened on Monday, Jan. 11 and Tuesday, Jan. 12.

On Monday, Jan. 11 there was a blood drive in the small gym. Goal was to receive 42 units, and it ended up with 44 units collected.

Chang declared, there was a new meal on the lunch menu - ""�Baked Ziti, and it was delicious!"

The Student Teacher in Mr. Weidner's class has completed his session.

He also listed dates for some upcoming athletic events.

Torzala told the board they are starting to plan for the Middle School/High School PBIS activities to be held in February, and commented that they have to come up with more activities and limit numbers at each so they can social distance.

He said there were only a few students on quarantine due to close contact with a positive COVID-19 case since the Holiday break.

There are two in-service days coming up in February. The first one, on Friday, Feb. 5, was to be for multiple schools to join, but now will be an in-service day. The second one, on Monday, Feb. 15, will be used for teachers to finalize First Semester grades.
