Cougars and Panthers Claim Regional TitlesIssue Date: February 3, 2021 Coleman Wins Lena Regional, Advances 13 to Sectional
A total of 13 of 14 Coleman wrestlers are headed to sectionals after Saturday's Division III regional at Lena.
Cameron Kimmell, Ray LeMieux, Brady Gross, Chance Gruber, Will Bieber, Karson Casper, Owen Kinziger, Peter Kuchta, Tyler Blanchard, Cole Klimek, Coby DenRuyter, Brody Zahn and Spencer Karban all took either first or second in their respective weight classes.
"I was very happy with our team's performance on Saturday getting 13 out of 14 to the individual sectionals," Coleman coach Kevin Casper said. "Not only was it great to get 13 individuals but it sets us up nicely to give us a better opportunity to win as a team next Saturday for the right to go to team state on Feb. 20."
Kimmell (106) went 1-1 in live matches, beating Lex Riehl of Shiocton in 35 seconds and winning by no contest in the second-place match and LeMieux (113) won by injury default after two byes to win his weight class.
Brady Gross went 2-1 in live matches, including a pin of Lena's Kevin Chang in the second-place match, to take second at 120.
Chance Gruber (132) received two byes, then lost a narrow 3-1 outcome to Lena's Sam Marquardt in the championship. He pinned Shiocton's Logan Leeman in 1:23 to advance.
Bieber (138) beat Jared Jahnke of Shiocton by 16-8 major decision in the semifinals. After losing in the championship by a single point, he advanced to sectionals after a no contest.
Casper went 2-0 to win the 145-pound weight class. He pinned Carter Whisman of Gillett/Suring in 45 seconds and beat Bonduel's Tyson Bogacz by 6-1 decision.
Kinziger (152) pinned Shiocton's Brad Demerath in 5:24, but was pinned by undefeated Max Sokolski of Bonduel in the first-place match. He advanced on a no contest over Demerath.
Coach Casper said Kinziger got a "huge win" in the semifinals against Demerath, being down by three points with only 30 seconds left in the match before his took Demerath to his back in the final seconds.
Kuchta won the 160-pound weight class by pinning Shiocton's Colten Schuh in 2:29 and winning by injury default in the championship.
Blanchard won at 170 by pin over Lena's Michael Thomas then beat Shiocton's Dion Helser by 17-2 tech fall.
Klimek (182) pinned Lena's Cody Dellise in 2:31, but was beaten by tech fall in the championship. After a pin of TJ Mueller of Crivitz, he advanced to sectionals.
DenRuyter (195) had to wrestle three matches to earn his way to sectionals, but he handled them in style, pinning Jackson Dahin in 33 seconds, Shiocton's Dylan Larsen in two minutes and beating Bonduel's Kaden Bergsbaken by 6-4 decision.
After two byes, Zahn pinned Shiocton's Israel Sanchez in 1:26 to win the 220-pound weight class.
Karban pinned Oconto's Aidan Diaz in 36 seconds and Lena's Frank Desjarles in 47 seconds to advance at 285 in less than a minute and a half.
John Nowak went 1-1. He lost his opening match against Luis Lagunes of Bonduel, and after rebounding with a decision win, he drew Lagunes again, meaning he lost the second-place match by no contest to take third at 126.
For Lena, four wrestlers are headed to sectionals. Lena took fourth as a team of seven teams.
Dylan Comins (106) won his only live match by 11-0 major decision over Coleman's Kimmell to take first place in his class. Sam Marquardt (132) went 2-0 with a tech fall win over Shiocton's Logan Leeman and a 3-1 decision over Coleman's Gruber to win his weight class.
Jayden Belongia (113) went 1-1 with a loss by injury default in the first-place match. He then won by no contest over Skyler Johnson of Crivitz, who he pinned in his opener, to take second. Frank Desjarles (285) also went 1-1 with a pin victory over Shiocton's Sheldon Anday. After a pin loss to Coleman's Karban, a no contest sent him to sectionals.
Kevin Chang (120) went 1-2 with a pin victory over Bonduel's Cooper Salerno before a loss to Coleman's Gross in the second-place match.
Ayden Decoursin (126) was 0-2 to take fourth, Michael Thomas (170) and Cody Dellise (182) were fourth with two losses apiece, Jackson Dahin (195) took fourth with an 0-1 record and two byes, Josh Kristoff (160) was 0-1 with two byes to take fifth and Franky Umentum was 0-2 to take sixth at 145.
Crivitz did not have any wrestlers advance to sectionals, taking fifth as a team. Skyler Johnson went 1-1 in live matches to take third at 113 and TJ Mueller was 1-2 in live matches including a pin to take third place at 182.
Karson Bins (160) was 0-2, taking fourth at 160, while Kyle Guy (195) was also fourth after a pair of pin losses.
Mitch Vanderpoel (145) was 1-1 with a pin victory to take fifth and Domenic Thoreson (152) was 1-1 with a pin victory in the fifth-place match.

For Oconto, Dominic Caylor took sixth at 152 after two losses on the day, while Aidan Diaz was fourth at 285 with two losses.
Oconto Falls Wins D2 Regional, Advances Nine to Sectional
Nine Oconto Falls wrestlers, five Marinette wrestlers and three Peshtigo wrestlers advanced to sectionals from Saturday's Division II regional in Oconto Falls.
For the hosts from Oconto Falls, five wrestlers won their weight classes and four were second to advance to sectionals. The Panthers were the top-finishing team of the six at the regional, edging second-place Seymour.
Garrett Ganter won his only match of the day over Peshtigo's Cole Sherman by pin win the 106-pound weight class, Graeson Pankratz (113) beat Seymour's Noah Gorecki by 7-1 decision to top his weight class, Trevor Schindel (160) beat Seymour's Lucas Leisgang by 6-1 decision and Marinette's Domenic Paradiso by pin in 3:59 and Clayton Whiting pinned Dakota Cuff of Marinette for his only match to win the 182-pound weight class.
Landon Budz (120) went 1-1 with a win over Peshtigo's Reese Yunke by 7-5 decision. After a pin loss in the championship, he won by no contest to advance to sectionals.
Luke Trepanier was 1-1 with a pin of Peshtigo's Brenden Conn. He narrowly lost in the championship by 7-5 sudden victory against Marinette's Isaiah Walker before a no contest in the second-place match.
Jeremy Caldwell was one of the Panthers' busier wrestlers, as the 152-pound wrestler competed in four matches, winning three. He beat Peshtigo's Kyle Rupert by 11-3 major decision and got two pins over Seymour's Colin Leisgang in 1:23 and Clintonville/Marion's Ethan Masiarchin in 2:35. He took second at 152.
"It's kind of been our goal all year. It's kind of been a crazy year. The kids haven't gotten much competition, some of the kids are maybe only five matches into the season, but we keep talking, "regionals is coming, regionals is coming,' so their goal has been to come in here, show that we're a good team, show that we can win our regional and that's exactly what they did today," Oconto Falls wrestling coach Cody Nielsen said. "In a normal year, we'd be 40 matches in, the kids would have some success and be able to keep them motivated throughout the year."
Nielsen said it was about two and a half weeks since the team last wrestled, so motivation has been a challenge, but the Oconto Falls wrestlers came out looking motivated to accomplish their goal of winning regionals. Now, it's onto sectionals.
"It's a lot of self-motivation. These kids, they come in knowing every day that they only got to wrestle eight to 10 matches this year and that's not easy for some of these kids. We've got to keep them motivated. These kids are young, a lot of them have only been wrestling for a couple of years, so we've just been lacking in the mat time normally these kids would have by now."
Zach Fonder went 0-2 to finish third at 220, Dylan Thomson (138) was 1-1 in live matches with a tech fall and Anthony Trevor was fourth at 145 with a 1-2 record.
Five Marinette wrestlers advanced to sectionals with either first or second-place finishes. The Marines were third as a team on the day.
Isaiah Walker (132) went 3-0 with two pins and a sudden victory to win his weight class, beating Seymour's Walker Kaczrowski in 1:33, Casey Plederl in 1:48 and defeating Luke Trepanier of Oconto Falls by 7-5 sudden victory.
Owen Suennen (138) pinned Clintonville/Marion's Eli Kendl in 1:28 and defeated Samuel Dudley of Seymour in a 6-3 decision.
Jonny Bieber (152) pinned Clintonville/Marion's Ethan Masiarchin in 2:35 and defeated Oconto Falls' Jeremy Caldwell by 16-9 decision.
Dakota Cuff (182) went 1-1 with a pin victory and pin loss to take second at his weight class. He won by no contest in the second-place match.
"They far exceeded my expectations for the season so far. They keep surprising me every time we go and wrestle, we get better and better," Marinette coach Matt Marotz said.
Katelyn Lewis (170) went 0-2 to take third, Domenic Paradiso was 1-2 to take third at 160, Cole Vargo (120) took fourth after an 0-2 day and Shayla Diaz went 0-2 to also take fourth.
For Peshtigo, Cole Sherman went 0-1, but won by either bye or no contest three times to take second at 106. Kody Klimek followed a similar path at 285. After two byes, he lost the championship match to Oconto Falls' Mitch Kallies by 3-2 decision, but was uncontested in the next match to take second.
Connor Thomas (195) pinned Clintonville/Marion's Owen Hertel in 1:23 for his only live match to win the 195-pound weight class.
Reese Yunke (120), Ethan Brissette (126) and Brenden Conn (132) each went 1-1 in live matches with a pin victory to take third in their respective weight classes.
Kyle Rupert (152) was fifth after two byes and a major decision loss.
"I wish we could have done a little better. We ended up pushing three kids through. We caught some tough breaks at the end of the day with some of the lighter weights, unfortunately weren't able to get a wrestleback and try to go back for second place, but we told the kids all week, the only way to guarantee it, you've got to win, unfortunately we saw the brunt end of that," Peshtigo coach Kory Weed said, adding that his team will build off of Saturday as it looks to the future.
For Florence/Goodman/Niagara/Pembine, Andar Olson was fifth at 145 with a pin loss and two byes to end the day.
