Beyer Leads Lena Past STAA in Double OT

Lena Battles STAA in Double Overtime Shootout

The Lena Wildcats and the St. Thomas Aquinas Cavaliers put on quite a show for the fans last Friday evening. After the dust settled on a game that was close throughout, and included a two extra frames, the Wildcats were the victors 69-66.

"It was an entertaining basketball game thats for sure," said Lena head coach Fritz Weidner. "Max Beyer really helped to win this one. he played well and so did the whole team "

It was an exciting matchup from the get go and the pace didn't slow till the final buzzer. Lena's Max Beyer went absolutely wild on the Lena hardwood, finishing the night with 40 points to his name.

It was a tight first half as the Wildcats trailed by one 24-23. STAA's shooting success had everything to do with a well balanced attack led by Alex Powers, Ethan Bradley and Griffen Knox. The three along with Ethan Russell kept St. Thomas in the mix.

"STAA is a good team that is consistently improving," said Weidner. "They were not the same team as they were the game before. Rick does a great job with those boys. I though Jake Belongia made some troubles for us out there tonight."

Over the closing frame Lena was able to meet the Cavvies with a 27 point readout. STAA finished with 26 points. With the time expired and the scored knotted up 50-50.

"I've been telling the boys that as soon as we could get away from that Christmas stretch that we could make some improvements," said STAA head coach Ric Powers. "We just had too many games in a row early on and no time to practice. Since then we have been having some great practices and they show."

But one overtime wasn't enough to decide this one as both teams scored 11 points to send the game into a second overtime. During that overtime the Wildcats finally were able to get the lead and hold it, scoring nine points to the Cavvies five.

Max Beyer took top scoring honors with 40 points. Logan Shallow and Sidney Sylvester both added one seven to the final tally. Jacob Belongia got seven.

"Overall this was a great team effort," said Weidner. "It was the first double overtime game I've coached. So it was a new experience. I'm so proud of the team with this win."

The Cavvies were led by Powers with 19 points, Bradley with 17 points and Knox with 14. Russell added up 11 on the night.

"Beyer had a great game," said Powers. "I just wish we could have stopped him on some threes. I was happy tonight to see Alex get things rolling. He has been improving this past week."



Cougars Break Open Tight Game, Pull Away from Marines

The Coleman Cougars took a little while to settle in against Marinette on Saturday, but once the Cougars found their way, they blasted off to an 82-51 win over their North Eastern Conference opponents.

The two teams went back and forth for the first seven minutes of the game, with Marinette holding a 20-18 lead with 11:25 to go in the half. That's when Coleman turned on the jets a bit and went on an 20-0 run to make it 38-20. By halftime, the score was 45-28 and things wouldn't get much better for Marinette in the second half, as Coleman opened up a 65-38 lead in the second half and never looked back.

"Basically, at the beginning of this game was us playing a conference team from the North Eastern Conference vs. playing one of ours, and making that adjustment to play that intense immediately instead of feeling it out," Coleman coach Tim Forner said. "That's their Achilles' heel at times, they can feel somebody out and then adjust. In this game, it took a little adjustment, little tweaks defensively and then we started doing what we do."

When Coleman started to do what it does, that meant taking the ball hard to the hoop and running a dribble-drive offense, something Marinette coach Matt Joost said his team hadn't really dealt with this season.

"They run dribble drive which we're not used to. It's a good look to get, them doing that to us, because we don't get that look in our league," Joost said.

Forner was able to get his bench playing time across the board, and said everyone that entered the game did good things.

"They all played well, they either had great defensive stops, rebounds, great passes, assists on penetration, just hit some shots maybe," he said. "Everything all around, as a team there was great team effort and they played really well, they really did."

Noah Nosgovitz led Coleman with a 7-for-11 night for 22 points, while Logan Zeitler scored 20 points on an 10-for-11 shooting night. Cayden Bintz scored 18 points.

For Marinette, Asaia Polazzo scored 16 points on a 7-for-17 night. Jake Sommerfeldt scored 15 points on 5-of-13 shooting, making five of his 10 3-point attempts.

Despite the 31-point loss, Joost said he saw some positive signs from his offense.

"Our offense is starting to finally look where it should, we're moving the ball. We're scoring because we're doing the things we're supposed to be doing, not just making 1-on-1 plays. At the beginning of the year, that was more how our scoring was happening," Joost said. "We can still do those things, and obviously there's room in our offense for that to happen, but now, we're not over-dribbling offensively. When we dribble, we're going to the basket hard, the ball is swinging side to side, we're looking weak side when we drive to get shooters, and that's what we did in the first half really, really well. We just got cold at some points, which is going to happen, so offensively, I really have no complaints after this game. I think both the last two games, it's been really good."



Oconto Overcomes Crivitz 65-44

The Oconto Blue Devils were the victors in last Thursday's competition with the Crivitz Wolverines 65-44.

Oconto was hard to stop offensively as the Wolverines saw the Devils oshot their way to a early lead, holding that edge till the intermission 27-16.

Over the second half the Wolverines scored 28 points, a considerable improvement from the 16 first half points. But the Devils kept hitting their shots, taking the win with an additional 38 points.

Josh Woller led the way for the Blue Devils with a game leading 19 points. Luke Krueger pitched in 13 points while Caleb Moe ended the night with 12 points.

Crivitz was led by Alec Grandaw with eight. Teammates Sean Christiansen, Eian Baumann and Brady Tadisch all posted seven points apiece.



Coleman Comes Up with Win Over Wausaukee

The Coleman Cougar boys were able to pounce on the Wausaukee Rangers last week, defeating the Rangers by way of a 75-22 final readout.

The blow out win saw the Coleman boys post a hefty volume of points over the first half. After the first buzzer it wasn't much of a game with the Cougars scoring 41 points to the Rangers six.

After the first half onslaught the Cougars refused to call off the dogs, firing in a merciless 34 points to the Rangers 16.

The Cougars saw Cayden Bintz lead the way with 18 points. Noah Nosgovitz piled on 15 points while Simon Meadke finished with 10.

Wausaukee was led by Danny Suennen with nine points and Peyton Betts with five points. Layne Rowley added four.



Oneida Nation Takes Down Crivitz

The Oneida Nation Thunderhawks, who have just recently taken to the court after Covid cancellations, trailed to Crivitz Monday night to take on the Wolverines who they defeated 54-44.

Oneida Nation created a little wiggle room over the first half, posting 30 points to the Wolverines' 21.

That edge was held in the second half where Oneida posted 24 to the Crivitz boys' 23.

Leading the way for the Thunderhawks was Javon Webster with 19 points Alex VanSteel added 13 points while Peyton Ponfel got nine.

Crivitz was led by Tegan Werner with 14 points and Eian Baumann with 10 points. Sean Christiansen got nine points.



Big Second Half Pushes Peshtigo Past Sevastopol

A big second half propelled Peshtigo to a 74-53 win over Sevastopol on Thursday.

The two teams were tied at 31 at halftime, but Peshtigo would go on to outscore Sevastopol by a 43-22 tally in the second half to win 74-53.

Sevastopol struggled from the free throw line (7-for-24) and shot 33% from the field (19-for-57).

Peshtigo wasn't much better from the field at 37%, but the Bulldogs took 10 more shots and made 16 of their 24 free throws.

Peshtigo's Adam Bauman led all scorers with 19 points, while Landon Lemke added 12. Christian Boyle and Mason Doberstein each scored eight and Collin Engman scored six.

For Sevastopol, Logan Beyer had 12 points and Jack de Young scored 10.



Blue Devils Blow Out Bulldogs in Conference Re-Match

"Out-hustled, out-manned, out-everything," was how Peshtigo coach Jason Boucher described Oconto's win over the Bulldogs on Monday.

Oconto came out and put Peshtigo to the sword early, taking its first double-digit lead with just under 10 minutes to play in the first half, 15-5.

With the score at 15-6, Logan Allan made a pair of 3-point shots to bring the lead to 21-6.

With the score at 24-8, Josh Delzer made Peshtigo pay for more lackluster perimeter defense, hitting three triples in a short period to take the lead to 34-10.

"He's probably one of our most pure shooters and the biggest thing is to get him going and get him some confidence. He doesn't always want to pull the trigger," Oconto coach John Moe said of Delzer. Once he hit the first one, that helped with his confidence and he was able to show what he can do, Moe said.

Peshtigo defeated Oconto on the Blue Devils' senior night last week, so this game was personal for Oconto.

The Blue Devils kept the foot on the gas and finished the game with a 62-38 win.

"That's what they're capable of and I've been waiting for it. We had a few of those games early and we've been on a bit of a lull, so it felt good to really play well," Moe said.

Oconto held Peshtigo to 15-of-55 shooting (27%). The Bulldogs made only one of their 12 shots from downtown, while Oconto made six of 10.

It was an all-around disappointment for Peshtigo.

"I told them before the game it's the biggest game of the year for us," Boucher said. "They're still steaming from us beating them the first time and I told them straight up, "if you don't come out to play, it's going to be an uphill battle all night,' and the proof's in the putting. Just from the start, we didn't have the energy to even compete and to be honest, it's embarrassing. It really is."

So now, just like Oconto had some good bulletin-board material for this rematch against Peshtigo, the Bulldogs will have all the motivation they need the next time the two teams meet, which could come in the playoffs.

"Peshtigo's a good team, and they got us the first time," Moe said. "I'm sure we're probably going to meet them again, the way it sets up in the playoffs, we're probably going to meet them again, and I'm sure they're marking this one just like we marked the first one, so I'm sure the third one is going to be nip and tuck."

Delzer's 11 and Caleb Moe's 11 led Oconto, while Josh Woller had 10 and Allan scored nine. Kadin Baxter chipped in seven.

Adam Bauman was Peshtigo's only scorer in double figures with 11 on 4-of-12 shooting.

Collin Engman had seven points with a game-high 16 rebounds for the Bulldogs.



Peshtigo Wins Non-Conference Match-Up With Green Bay West

Peshtigo bounced back from a frustrating loss to Oconto with a 64-46 win over Green Bay West on Tuesday night.

Peshtigo took a 31-22 lead into the halftime break and kept things going in the second half.

Free throws were a problem for Peshtigo, as the Bulldogs made just 11 of 23 free throws (47%). The Bulldogs out-rebounded Green Bay West by a 40-24 margin, with Collin Engman leading the way with 12 boards.

Engman also scored 11 points on 4-of-10 shooting. Adam Bauman had 14 points and Koby Cuyler made three of his five shots to finish with 10 points.

Mason Doberstein had nine points on a 3-of-5 night and Landon Lemke added eight on 2-of-10 shooting.

Peshtigo's bench was a big factor, as non-starters scored 24 points for the Bulldogs. On the flip side, G.B. West got just four points from its bench players.

For G.B. West, Jefferson Cooper-Holmes scored 17 points to lead all scorers.



Slow Start Hurts Marinette in Loss to Wrightstown

The Marinette Marines couldn't overcome a 44-point first half by Wrightstown on Friday as they fell 82-69 at home.

Marinette fell behind 44-28 at the half, which negated a strong second half in which the Marines outscored Wrightstown by a 41-38 score.

Marinette had three players in double figures: Asaia Polazzo scored 18 on 8-for-14 shooting, Jake Sommerfeldt scored 14 points on 5-for-7 shooting (3-for-5 from three) and Sam Sommerfeldt had 12 points, making four of his six attempts, all from three-point range.

Wrighstown out-rebounded Marinette 31-21 and committed just four turnovers to Marinette's 14.
