Cougars & Patriots Bow Out in Sectional Semis

Cougars Quick Start Isn't Enough to Hang With Hot Shooting Crusaders

Coleman boys basketball coach Tim Forner knew that his team was going to be facing tough opponents as it progressed into the sectional rounds of the Division 4 WIAA basketball tournament.

It doesn't get much tougher than the hot-shooting Jonah Jurss and the rest of the Sheboygan Area Lutheran Crusaders, who beat Coleman 90-55 on Thursday.

Jurss hit 11 of his 14 attempts from 3-point range to finish with 33 points in the game. At one point, Forner guessed he hit eight or nine in a row.

"He's still hot," Forner said with the game over and teams in the locker rooms.

Coleman actually led 14-5 just under six minutes into the game, with Noah Nosgovitz scoring seven of the team's first 14 points to put the Cougars ahead.

Coleman hung onto a lead until the score was 18-16, right about the time that Jurss started to get hot.

Down 16-7, he hit his first triple of the game. He cut the lead to three with another one. After a Coleman basket, Casey Verhagen hit a triple to tie the game at 19.

Then, the Crusaders took a 29-19 lead on a 10-0 run, with Jurss hitting two more threes. In a 12-minute span, he made six 3-pointers, helping his team to a 41-25 lead at the half.

The wheels really fell off the bus for Coleman in the second half, with the Crusaders coming out of the break on a 26-6 run to take a 67-32 lead with less than 10 to play. By that point, it was all but over.

"It's really hard to lock down on one guy. They have numerous guys that can hit," Forner said of the Crusaders. "You have 24, Verhagen's really the catalyst of everything they do and is tough as nails once he gets in the lane, which is what he strives to do. If he gets in there and you close down, he's going to find that open guy rolling, he's going to find somebody, and he did a heck of a job of that and the rest of the team did a heck of a job getting 21 the ball."

Jurss, a senior, will be playing basketball at Concordia University next season, according to an interview with the Sheboygan Sun. Verhagen, a junior, has an offer from Northern Michigan University, which competes in NCAA Division II for basketball.

Verhagen, who averaged more than 27 points per game this season, would finish the game with 21 points, while 6-foot-6 Jackson Holzheimer had 12 and Robby Michael scored 11.

Sheboygan Lutheran is, of course, the alma mater of Wisconsin basketball legend Sam Dekker, and a perennial powerhouse in Division 4.

"They're bigger than us and more athletic than us," Forner said. "It's a sectional, what do you expect to get? You expect to get the best of the best of the state now and it's going to keep getting more and more deep as it goes."

Another problem for Coleman on the night was difficulty finishing in the paint. Forner estimated that his team missed about 20 "bunnies" over the course of the game.

"You can't win games if you're missing those. You just can't," he said. "We were getting those looks and we just weren't finishing. Again, if you leave 20 total shots for about 40 points on the floor, you're not going to come close to beating a team like this."

Simon Maedke, a 6-foot-5 senior, led Coleman with 10 points. Nosgovitz and Joe Olsen each had nine points with Cayden Bintz and Logan Zeitler adding eight each.

Coleman will lose several seniors: Bintz, Dylan Marquardt, Zach Zablocki, Zeitler and Maedke.

"I'm so proud of these guys. We're going to miss these seniors. They meant so much to so many wins for this program," Forner said. "There's guys that are coming back right now and the juniors that are coming back, some sophomores that are coming back, there's still some ballplayers there, but we're going to miss these seniors. They've done a great job for us over four years, and I am very proud to have coached them."

Coleman will bring five juniors and three sophomores from this year's roster back into the fold in 2021-22.

Sheboygan Lutheran would fall in the next round at the hands of superstar guard Preston Ruedinger and Lourdes Academy.

Patriots Fall to Bigger More Experienced Blazers

When you get late into the WIAA boys' basketball playoffs, sometimes you just run into a team that's a little bit bigger, stronger and oftentimes older than you are.

That was the case for the Goodman-Pembine boys against the Green Bay NEW Lutheran co-op on Thursday.

NEW Lutheran beat Goodman-Pembine by a 88-46 tally to end the Patriots' season.

While Goodman-Pembine has only two seniors, NEW Lutheran boasts a roster of four seniors, along with seven players 6-foot-2 or bigger, including 6-foot-6 sophomore Tristian Lynch.

Lynch stuffed the first-half stat sheet for the Blazers, scoring 12 of his 18 points in the period.

His team had the lead early. After a 9-8 Goodman-Pembine lead, the Blazers scored 14 straight to take the lead of 22-9. The closest the game would get after that was an 11-point margin, as the Blazers built up a 48-23 halftime lead, closing the half on a 10-2 run, with 6-foot-3 senior Marshal Bukowski scoring six of the final eight points of the half.

Bukowski was another one to show off his skills in the first half, dumping in 17 of his 24 points prior to the first-half buzzer. He would lead all scorers for the game.

On a team full of size, 5-foot-8 Elijah Lange also put up some good numbers, scoring 15 points in the game for NEW.

The Patriots faced a lot of jitters in the first half, struggling with turnovers against a large defensive presence. Things didn't get much better in the second half, with the Blazers opening the half on a 25-11 run to break open a 29-point lead.

The Patriots continued to push themselves until the end, but it just wasn't in the cards against the sectional's top seed, an eventual state qualifier.

"This season, I've been working on just getting them not to give up when they fall behind, just to give it everything they have, leave everything on the court and just try to play up to their competition," G-P coach Joseph Nutt said of his team. "Tonight was a rough night for our guys. I don't know if it was nerves or jitters or the size of the team. They worked hard, it's a tough way to end the season."

It was a season that didn't allow the Patriots onto the court until about a week before the regular season tipped off due to the uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic. Nutt is looking forward to a full offseason of work with his young team going into next year.

Nutt will lose seniors Lamarr Lewis, a starting forward, and guard Tyler Schnell to graduation, but the rest of the team is set to return next year. Nutt said it's an exciting opportunity for a good group of players.

"They are a great team, they're a great group of boys. I've been with them since they were in seventh grade, almost all of them, so I know them very well, they know me very well and the sky's the limit for this group of guys," Nutt said. "Hopefully they put in the work in the offseason and remember this feeling, remember what it was like to get to this point so we can go farther next year."

Boone Larison led G-P with 13 points on the night. Lewis scored eight of his final 10 points in the second half and Bryson McVay scored 10 as well with Ryan Erickson adding eight.

Just minutes after the sun had set on the Patriots' 2020-21 season, Nutt was already looking ahead to 2021-22.

"I'm already ready to get going for next year," he said.

Menominee Loses Shootout with Escanaba

The Menominee Maroon boys traveled to Escanaba Thursday evening to take on the Eskimos in what turned out to be quite a shootout. After the dust settled from the high scoring action the Eskimos were the victors 86-79.

Escanaba was tough in their first half and was able to fight its way to a 30-19 lead by the first buzzer. That was held over the second frame by Escanaba with an additional 19 points to the Maroons' 17. At the intermission the Eskimos led 49-36.

The third quarter saw the Maroons even the playing field just a bit as they held the Eskimos to 24 points while also scoring 24 points of their own.

The fourth quarter is where the Maroons made up some ground scoring 19 points to the Eskimos' 14. During that frame the Maroons cut the lead to 75-71 with less than five minutes left to play. It was the closest they would get to overturning the Eskimo lead.

Leading the way for the Maroons was Aiden Bellisle with 25 points and Brady Schultz with 23 points. Cooper Conway followed up with 19 while Staryznski posted six on the night.

Escanaba was led by Colin Hudson with 24 points and Frazer with 16 points. Smale and Hanson both posted 13 points each for the Eskimos.
