Peshtigo Varsity Bowlers Headed to State Tourney

Issue Date: March 3, 2021

This season saw both the boys and girls varsity bowling teams dealt a difficult season with many challenges to reach the State Tournament, highlighting the best Division I and II teams in the state. The State Bowling Tournament is conducted by the Bowling Centers Association of Wisconsin, and will be held this weekend, March 5, 6, and 7 at the Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley.

The boys team overcame a few season losses by defeating a strong Green Bay Preble team in their final match, earning them a playoff with Ashwaubenon and Pulaski. The Bulldog bowlers got hot and rolled to a win in that playoff to earn the final spot in Division II.

The girls team saw a key win in their final match against the Marinette Marines to earn the lone Division II spot from the conference. The team was able to put all the elements together at the end of the season and rolled their best when it mattered. The girls varsity bowling team is coached by Tony Stublic and Matt Kowalski, while the boys are coached by Roby and Tom Lund.

Individually, Travis Lund and Beverly Bloch both were able to qualify with a high strike/spare fill percentage in the conference to earn each a berth in the singles competition at state. Lund, a junior who has also bowled individually last year's tournament qualified by filling 88% of the 152 frames he bowled this season. When asked about going to state this year, Lund had this to say, "I didn't bowl as great as I wanted to"Nobody from Peshtigo has gotten past the first round, so I am looking to be the first." While, Bloch who is a Sophomore, completed filling 82% of her 180 frames bowled. Not only is this her first time competing individually at state, she is also the first girl from the Lady Bulldogs to qualify for singles competition, Bloch had this to say about the upcoming competititon, "Last year I really pulled through, and this year I will just do the best that I can. Definitely nerves setting in, yes, but I feel I can actually overcome them when it comes to bowling at state." Both Lund and Bloch will be bowling Friday, March 5 at 4:00 p.m. at the Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley in Green Bay. If both finish in the top 25% of the of the boys and girls competition following three games of qualifying, they will go on and bowl another three games on Saturday night in order to earn a top five Sunday finals spot.

The boys and girls teams will bowl 15 Baker-style games at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night, for a chance to roll off Saturday night to earn a Sunday finals appearance. Finishing first or second after all qualifying squads are complete would place them automatically into Sunday's final.

The National Federation of State High School Associations defines the Baker Format: this system of scoring involves a lead-off person bowling frames one and six, the second person bowling frames two and seven, and so on. The Baker system emphasizes the idea of performing as a team by capitalizing on each other's strikes and spares for the team count.

Due to COVID-19, the event will limit one family member per bowler along with their coaches, no other spectators will be allowed into the bowling center. The Center Bowl in Peshtigo will be streaming the events, you can also watch on Peshtigo Middle/High School's Facebook page.
