Lena Has 30 Applicants To Replace Principal Torzala

Issue Date: March 10, 2021

A month ago, Lena Board of Education was informed that Middle School/High School Principal James Torzala will retire on June 30. The job vacancy was posted promptly. District Administrator/Elementary Principal Ben Pytleski advised the School Board at its monthly meeting meeting on Monday, March 1 that they had already received 30 applications for the job.

â€This is good,†Pytleski declared, and added that now they can begin narrowing down the candidate list. The position will be either vacant or filled by a new person on Thursday, July 1.

On Tuesday, April 6, voters of the district are being asked to authorize tax levies that exceed state-established revenue limits for each of the next five years, but approval should result in little or no increase in tax rates, and Pytleski has been delivering the message throughout the district to explain the funding referendum and encourage people to vote for it.

He told the board he had recently attended meetings of Lena and Little River town boards, will be attending Oconto and Stiles town board meetings next, and on Tuesday, March 23 there is to be an informational meeting in the school cafeteria.

Pytleski has been informing the public that according to Baird financial advisers, tax rates should decrease for the first two years of the referendum-authorized spending and then go up just seven cents per $1,000 for the remaining three years. The drop would be from $10.41 this year to $10.33 next year and $9.59 for the year after that, and then rise to $9.79 and $10.39 and then stay at about $10.46 over the final three years of the referendum period. There's a possibility the impact could be even less.

The big decrease in the second year is the result of paying off the debt from a 2003 building project. Pytleski has said that the tax rate projections used â€fairly conservative†estimates of state equalization aid, which is expected to decline. If state aid stays the same or increases, there would most likely be a continued drop in the mill rate.

Board members present for the 6:30 p.m. meeting on March 1 were Charles Imig, Timothy A. Goldschmidt, Ed Huberty and President Lori Dufek. David McNurlen was absent. Without dissent, they approved a number of new and amended board policies, accepted the CESA-8 contract for the 2021-2022 school year, and approved early release dates for for on-site Vaccination Clinics on Friday, March 12, and Friday, April 9.

Student Representative Kevin Chang was absent.

Torzala reported that on Friday, Feb. 26 they had held the PBIS event for middle school and high school students. The high school had 97% of the students eligible and the middle school had 90% of the students eligible.

Honors letters were out for the first semester. At the high school level, 58% of the students received some form of honors due to their grades and 62% of the middle school students received some form of honors due to their grades.

Torzala noted the ACT test time is fast approaching, starting with â€pretest bubbling on Friday, March 5. The tests were to be on Friday, March 9 at St. Anne's, after which juniors were free to go home for the remainder of the afternoon, with parental permission.

Scheduling the underclassmen has been completed for next year.

Pytleski reported they are â€bumping†prom plans to May. The Spaghetti Supper is to be held on Thursday, March 18 from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., but it will be a drive through, with pick up behind the cafeteria. Tickets are available in the District Office for $7 in advance and $8 at the door.

Parent/Teacher Conf erences are to be held virtually from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 31.
