Always Remember - City of Marinette firefighters Jason Lemire and Alex Kurth, took time on Tuesday, Sept. 7 to place 343 American flags in the ground at the Marinette Fire Station. The flags represent the 343 firefighters, police officers and emergency responders who died on Sept. 11, 2001. Firefighter Josh Plansky came up with the idea of the flags to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Pictured left to right; Chief Jay Heckel, firefighters Chris Erickson, Jeff Peterson, Doug VanWinkle, Beau Liebman and assistant chief Shawn Timblin. The flags will remain up at the fire station through the weekend, according to Chief Heckel.

"Never Forget" Walk Honoring Responders Saturday In Peshtigo

Issue Date: September 8, 2021

Plans have been finalized for the 9-11 Memorial Walk that will take place in Peshtigo on Saturday, September 11. The City of Peshtigo, Town of Peshtigo, Grover-Porterfield and Town of Wagner Fire Departments are sponsoring the event.

The walk isn't just for first responders but for anyone who would like to come out and show their support in honoring the 343 firefighters and those who died at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Families are especially welcomed and kids can ride their bikes or scooters in the route. Last year parents pushed young children in strollers, buggies and wagons and just enjoyed the 9.11 kilometer walk.

Those interested, should arrive at the City of Peshtigo Fire Station 2, 800 Pine Street, beginning at 8 a.m. to check in with the walk starting at 9:11 a.m. Ample parking will be available in the parking lot of New Life Church and DNR Building parking lot located just west of the fire department. The course will be the same as it was last year with emergency vehicles leading the way and blocking traffic where necessary. The Peshtigo Police Department will block main roads so walkers can safely pass. Emergency Rescue Squad will also be available if anyone needs any first aid assistance. All walkers will be given a picture of one of the fallen firefighters to carry with them as they walk.

Bottled water will be available to all the walkers' courtesy of Anderson's Culligan of Peshtigo and "Dave the Schwan's Man" will provide ice cream after the walk. Participants will be able to take several breaks during the walk and firefighters will have bottled water with them if anyone needs some. Father Terry LaCombe of Marinette will lead a prayer and have a moment of silence in memory of those that died in the terrorist attack 20 years ago.

Food and refreshments will be available after the walk and proceeds will go to benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. Ladies from Faith Lutheran Church in Marinette will hold a big bake sale and members of the Grover-Porterfield Women's Auxiliary will help with the food preparation. If anyone has questions please contact members of the City of Peshtigo, Town of Peshtigo, Grover-Porterfield or Wagner Fire Departments. Even if you don't want to walk firefighters encourage everyone to come out and support the event.
