Jennifer Granholm christens the USS Marinette

Future USS Marinette Christened On Nov. 20

Issue Date: November 24, 2021

At a private ceremony on a frosty Saturday, Nov. 20, with a small group of well-wishers looking on, Ship Sponsor Jennifer Granholm, former Governor of Michigan and current US Secretary of Energy, broke a bottle of sparkling wine over the bow of LCS 25 - to christen the vessel that is destined to become the USS Marinette.

The Lockheed Martin-led team had launched the ship into the waters of the Menominee River at the Fincantieri Marinette Marine shipyard in Marinette on Oct. 31, 2020. LCS 25 is slated to begin acceptance trials next year. Some gear repairs will likely be done before those trials begin.

"Today's christening of Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) 25, the future USS Marinette, marks the next critical milestone in the life of this warship. It's an honor to celebrate this moment with the many hardworking men and women who both built the Marinette and call this great city home. The Lockheed Martin team is proud of our continued partnership with the U.S. Navy to support enhanced war fighting capabilities to this highly capable class of Freedom-variant Littoral Combat Ships," Steve Allen, Lockheed Martin Vice President, Small Combatants and Ship Systems, declared at the christening ceremonies.

"Building LCS 25 and sister ships for the U.S. Navy is an honor and we are proud to be the nation's shipyard in the heartland. It is especially memorable to have this ship be named for the great town it's built in. This christening is a testament to the hard work of more than 2,500 shipbuilders who pass through our gates and build American warships," Fincantieri Marinette Marine CEO Mark Vandroff remarked.

Unique among combat ships, LCS is designed to complete close-to-shore missions and is a growing and relevant part of the Navy's fleet. The LCS vessels built at marinette are flexible, with 40 percent of the hull easily reconfigurable. They can be modified to integrate capabilities including over-the-horizon missiles, advanced electronic warfare systems (SEWIP) and decoys (Nulka), and in future, vertical launching systems or laser weapon systems. The vessels are reported to be fast, capable of speeds in excess of 40 knots; automated, with the most efficient staffing of any combat ship, and lethal??standard equipped with Rolling Airframe Missiles (RAM) and a Mark 110 gun, capable of firing 220 rounds per minute.

Ship sponsor, the Honorable Jennifer Granholm, was sworn in as the 16th United States Secretary of Energy on February 25, 2021, becoming just the second woman to lead the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Prior to her nomination as Secretary of Energy, Jennifer Granholm was the first woman elected Governor of Michigan, serving two terms from 2003 to 2011.

The christening celebrates a major milestone in the life of the future USS Marinette (LCS 25) and marks a significant event in the history of the nation's 25th Littoral Combat Ship. The future USS Marinette will be the first commissioned U.S. Navy combatant ship to bear the name. The ship's name honors the city's significant contribution to Navy shipbuilding. Shipbuilding has been part of the fabric of the Marinette community since 1942. Since that time, more than 1,500 vessels have been produced in the city. Marinette is also home to the Freedom-Variant Littoral Combat Ship.

There have been problems reported with combining gears on the LCS manufactured at Marinette Marine and eventually this issue will need to be repaired.

Meanwhile, five LCS remain under construction in various stages at Marinette Marine: the Cooperstown, Marinette, Nantucket, Beloit and Cleveland.

The Navy and Marinette Marine are already moving forward with work on frigates instead of the LCS at Marinette. The frigates will be more heavily armored and weaponized ships. Building of the frigates will begin in spring 2022, with the first ship ready to turn over to the Navy in spring, 2026.
