Five County Board Members Will Not Seek Re-Election

Issue Date: December 30, 2021

All 30 Supervisor seats on Marinette County Board expire in April of 2022 and will be filled at the Spring elections on Tuesday, April 5, 2022. As of Wednesday, Dec. 29, only five incumbent supervisors have filed declarations of non-candidacy giving official notice of their intention to not seek return to office. Marinette County Clerk Kathy Brandt reported the remaining 25 incumbent supervisors have either already filed nomination papers or informed her that they plan to do so.

Incumbent supervisors who have filed Declarations of Non- Candidacy announcing that they are not seeking re-election are Tricia Grebin, Dunbar/Goodman, District 3 (formerly District 5, Dunbar/Athelstane); Penny Chaikowski, Porterfield /Lake, District 13; Jillian Schutte, 491 N. Lake Street, Peshtigo, District 19; Mike Behnke, 345 S. Ellis Ave., Peshtigo, District 20, and Ted Sauve, 3341 Carney Ave., Marinette, District 27.

Currently there are no announced candidates for District 13, which includes parts of Porterfield/Lake; District 19 and District 20 in the City of Peshtigo , and District 27 in the City of Marinette.

Redistricting after the 2020 census put both Grebin and Incumbent Supervisor Bill Stankevich of Goodman in District 3, but Grebin had previously said she would not be running again in any case. Stankevich has filed for return as supervisor for District 3. District 5, formerly represented by Grebin, was left with no incumbent after the redistricting, and Christopher Norton, of W16355 Finch Lane, so far is the only candidate seeking to fill the vacancy.

So far, competition is scarce. The only challenges are in District 6, where incumbent George Kloppenburg, of Deer Trail Road, Amberg, faces a challenge from Christopher Norton of Old 38 Road, Town of Wausaukee, and in City of Marinette District 30, where veteran Supervisor Al Mans is being challenged by Denise Oleszak, a first-time contender for the position.

Decision of long-time Supervisor Ted Sauve to not be on the 2022 ballot means that in April he will end a career of service on County Board that has spanned decades, and included several terms as County Board Chair.

Persons wanting have their name on the ballot as a candidate for any of the local, county or school board positions to be filled in the April 5 elections have until the deadline at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, to get their properly signed nomination papers and other legal documents filed, Brandt said. The courthouse will be closed at noon on Friday, Dec. 31, and all day on Monday, Jan. 3. Anyone who decides to seek office after the filing deadline may do so as a write-in candidate. There is a week-long extension to allow other candidates to file if an incumbent failed to file a declaration of non-candidacy and then also did not file nomination papers and become a candidate.

Brandt noted that maps showing new boundaries of the 30 Marinette County Supervisory Districts are posted on the county website. She advised candidates and potential candidates to check those maps to be sure they have the correct district number. Candidates must live in the district they are seeking to represent. If a primary is required for any of the County Supervisor districts, municipal or school district elections to be held in April, it will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 15.
