Cougars/Panthers Claim Regional TitlesIssue Date: February 16, 2022Area Wrestling Coleman Wins D3 Regional,
13 Grapplers Advance
Coleman saw 13 of 14 wrestlers advance to individual sectionals from regionals on Saturday.
Eight Cougars won their weight classes over wrestlers from Crandon, Crivitz, Elcho, Florence/Niagara, and Wabeno/Laona/Three Lakes.
Coleman captured the regional crown with a score of 305.5. Crandon was second with 203 followed by Wabeno/Laona (146), Crivitz (56), Niagara/Florence (25) and Elcho (12).
A couple Cougars wrestled just one match to win their weight classes. Brady Gross (126) had his only match in the championship, beating Crandon's Ty Dennee by 15-0 tech fall to win his weight class.
Chance Gruber won the 132-pound weight class with a pin of Crandon's Renn Marvin in 3:58, Karson Casper (145) beat Crandon's Cole Shepherd in an 8-2 decision, and Brody Zahn (285) pinned Crandon's Connor Lawrence in 3:17.
Ray LeMieux did not have to wrestle a match to pick up a weight class win at 113.
Peter Kuchta pinned two opponents in less than a minute to win the 182-pound weight class, Will Bieber (152) picked up a pin and a major decision to win his weight class, and Micah Kuchta was 2-0 with a pin and decision to claim victory at 138.
Connor Markiewicz was 1-1 in live matches, with a win over Evan Kaufman of Crivitz in the semifinal. He took second at 106. John Nowak pinned W/L/TL's Noah Kincaid in 36 seconds and went 1-1 to take second at 120, Isaiah Nowak (160) went 2-1 with two decision wins to take second, Cole Klimek was 1-1 with a pin of Crandon's Caden Palubicki to take second, and Dameon Burke pinned Ethan Thorbahn of Crandon in 5:33 to take second at 220 after a 1-1 day.
Sawyer Seefeldt went 1-1 as well, but ended up third at 195.
"I'm extremely proud and happy for our 13 wrestlers that made it through the regionals with the opportunity to have a chance to fulfill their dreams of going to individual state next weekend," Coleman coach Kevin Casper said. "The kids wrestled fantastic and I was very proud of them. Getting 13 out of 14 wrestlers to sectionals is a great accomplishment, but I know all of them have higher goals and hopefully they will get to fulfill those next week."
Crivitz saw two wrestlers advance to sectionals. Kyle Guy went 1-1 with a decision win over Seefeldt at 195 to take second, and TJ Mueller picked up two quick pin wins at 182 after a loss to Peter Kuchta to start his day. He finished second.
Evan Kaufman was 0-1 at 106 to take third and Dominic Thoresen (152) was 1-1 to place third.
Florence/Niagara's Breyson Kelley moved on with a 1-1 record and second-place finish at 152. He started with a pin of Thoresen before a loss to Bieber.
Jacob Smith (160) was fifth.
Panthers Win D2 Regional, Bulldogs/
Marines Wrestlers Advance to Sectional
Oconto Falls, Peshtigo, and Marinette are all sending wrestlers through to sectional competition after Saturday's Division 2 regional in Oconto Falls.
The Panthers won their home regional finishing with 269 points. Tomahawk was second with 204.5. Marinette came in third with 133 followed by Antigo (108.5), Peshtigo (108) and Menominee Indian (63).
Wrestlers needed to place in the top two of their individual weight classes to move on to sectionals. Peshtigo is sending four wrestlers on, all on second-place finishes.
Ethan Suennen (106) went 1-1 with a major decision win over Oconto Falls' Garrett Ganter to take second, Reese Yunke (126) went 1-1 in live action with a major over Tomahawk's Blake Felser, Ethan Brissette beat Falls' Jaden Ganter and went 1-1 at 132, and Connor Thomas (220) pinned Antigo's Hunter Cordova to take a 1-1 record and second place.
All four won by no contest in the second-place match after the wrestlers they beat earlier in the day were their would-be opponents.
Peshtigo is going to have some work to do to get ready for a tough sectional weekend, but even sending four is a big step in the right direction for the Bulldogs. Last year, the Bulldogs sent only Thomas, who ended up taking fourth at sectionals.
"We did a lot better than last year. We managed to get four through today, so that's a really nice thing to see. I would have liked to see a few more firsts, but we're making it to sectionals, so it's an improvement from last year. That's the main thing," Peshtigo coach Kory Weed said. "We've got to get a lot better. We didn't get anybody through with a first place, so we're going to be running up against first-place finishers right away. We need to be ready, otherwise it's going to be a really quick day for us."
Also competing for Peshtigo, Brenden Conn was 0-1 and took third at 120, Levi Nemec (138) was 0-1 to take third at 138, Jess Haynes was 0-1 and took fifth at 145, and Caleb Klimek went 1-1 but placed fifth at 152.
Marinette is sending four wrestlers through, three with first-place titles.
Isaiah Walker (132), Josh Walker (138), and Jonny Bieber (152) all took first, and Logan Paris (195) was second.
Isaiah Walker pinned Tomahawk's Ryan Larson in 2:39 and beat Peshtigo's Brissette by 9-2 decision. Josh Walker wrestled just one match, a 1:51 pin of Falls' Parker Peterson.
Bieber pinned Tomahawk's Brayden Jones in 1:28 and Antigo's Nolan Kielcheski in 2:59 to win his weight class. Paris went 2-1. After a 34-second pin over Antigo's Wyat Beaber, he was pinned by Falls' Nick Trepanier before a bounce-back pin over Ethan Trayes of Tomahawk in the second-place match.
Cole Vargo was 0-2 and took fourth at 126, Dalton Heimerman (160) went 0-1 and took third, Jaxon Smith was 1-1 but took third at 182, and John Boyce was 1-1 but ended up fifth at 220.
Marinette coach Matthew Marotz has his sights set high after an impressive regional performance.
"We did pretty good," he said. "I'm really hoping we can get at least two through sectionals. That would be a pretty awesome wrestling season for us."
Oconto Falls is sending nine wrestlers on to sectional competition, with six having placed first in their individual weight classes. Five of the Panthers moving on are freshmen.
Hunter Bozile (113), Graeson Pankratz (120), Cole Bozile (126), Luke Trepanier (145), Clayton Whiting (182), and Nick Trepanier (195) each won their class.
Hunter Bozile's only match was a 10-1 major decision over Tomahawk's Andrew Tollefson. Pankratz's only match was also a major decision win, his over Tomahawk's Addison Peissig by a 10-2 score.
Cole Bozile pinned Marinette's Cole Vargo and beat Peshtigo's Yunke by a 6-2 score. Luke Trepanier pinned Tomahawk's Hudson Mattke in 2:54 and Menominee Indian's Gregory Turney in 3:38. Nick Trepanier pinned Tomahawk's Ethan Trayes in 1:56 and Marinette's Paris in 4:56. Whiting didn't even need a minute to beat either of his opponents, beating Menominee Indian's Jaycee Braddock-Madosh in 21 seconds aand Tomahawk's Micah Arnott in 51 seconds.
Mitchell Kallies (285), Quinton McDonald (160), and Parker Peterson (138) were each second.
Kallies was 1-1 in live matches with a win over Menominee Indian's Asenex Turney by 5-1 decision. McDonald pinned Marinette's Heimerman and finished 1-1, and Peterson pinned Peshtigo's Nemec before a loss in the first-place match. All three won by no contest in the second-place match.
"I think they wrestled really well. We look forward to this part of the season all year long. We talk about each tournament, each practice is preparing us for now, and we talk about coming in, we're zero and zero, and we don't care about records, we don't care about seeds. We know what we put in, we know the work we do, so I thought they came and wrestled pretty well," Oconto Falls coach Cody Nielsen said. "We have a young group of guys, and you never know how they're going to do in their first regional tournament. We had a lot of freshmen wrestling their first regional tournament and I think they stepped up and did really well. I believe we pushed five freshmen through, so that's pretty tough."
Garrett Ganter (106) went 1-1 with a loss to Peshtigo's Suennen and a pin victory but took third, Jaden Ganter (132) was third with one pin victory and a loss to Peshtigo's Brissette, Weston Borkovec (152) was 1-1 with a pin victory and pin loss, and Brayden Kozlowski was 1-2 with a pin sandwiched between two losses at 170. Luke Gilbertson (220) was 1-2 and took fourth.
Four Wildcats to
Wrestle at Sectionals
Four Lena Wildcats won their individual weight classes at their home regional on Saturday to advance to sectionals.
Dylan Comins (106), Sam Marquardt (138), Josh Kristoff (170), and Franky Umentum (195) each won their weight classes to move on. The top two wrestlers from each weight class moved on to sectional competition.
Comins tech-falled his only opponent, Bonduel's Jaxon Bogacz, 17-2. Marquardt pinned Oconto's Miguel Vargas in 51 seconds and beat Wittenberg-Birnamwood's Max Kersten 7-0. Kristoff (170) pinned Oconto's Kyle Bowman in 1:31 and W-B's Cain Schiller in 3:04, and Umentum (195) pinned W-B's Coye Brillowski in 5:20 and Oconto's Owen Hansen in 1:20.
Lena's Dylan Urbanek (285) did not advance after a 1-2 record and third-place finish.
Three Oconto wrestlers moved on. Tyler Meekman (120) and Dominic Caylor (160) each went 1-1 with a pin victory, and Conner Christensen (285) won his weight class.
Christensen pinned Lena's Urbanek in 1:51 and W-B's Dominic Weso in 1:32.
Owen Hansen (195) took third with a 1-2 record. After starting with a win, he lost his next two matches by pin.
Jaymison Markham (126), Ethan Wusterbarth, and Devon Bostwick were 0-1 and placed third. Miguel Vargas (138) and Kyle Bowman (170) were fourth after 0-2 days.
Three of Gillett/Suring's four wrestlers moved on. Riley Denowski (113) pinned W-B's Treyton Bierman in 1:45 to win his weight class, Keegan Rattin (145) went 1-1 to take second, and Trent Van Den Elzen (152) beat W-B's Owen Schultz by 6-4 decision in his only match of the day to win his class.
Carter Whisman (160) was fourth with an 0-2 record.
Wittenberg-Birnamwood took the team title with a score of 260.5. Bonduel was second with 160, followed by Oconto (124), Lena (113.5), Gillett/Suring (77) and Oneida Nation (12).
Menominee Grapplers
Drop Match to Kingsford
Menominee was beaten 48-0 in District 165 team competition on Wednesday.
The only live matchup was a Josh Peterson pin of the Maroons' Cameran Gauthier in a minute and 26 seconds at 189.
The Flivvers won via forfeit at 103, 125, 140, 152, 160, 215, and 285.
Gladstone went on to win the district, beating Kingsford 57-24. They face Cheboygan in the regional semifinal on Wednesday, Feb. 16. A win would see them face either Kingsley or Ogemaw Heights in the regional final later that night.
Menominee Wrestlers
