From Our ReadersIssue Date: April 13, 2022 Dear Editor
It has come to my attention from several city residents that certain individuals have been spreading false truths about the City of Peshtigo and myself. I know this to be a fact because I have read many of them myself. There is one difference, I know the truth. I am not going to list any names of the individuals but you know who you are. Whether it was in person, on Facebook or the Citizen Discussion Group I know who you are. I also know that before the election these falsehoods were meant to hurt me, but truth prevailed and I was successful in winning another two year term as Mayor. When people approached me some of them actually believed what they were being told about their water bills doubling and on one of the sites it stated water bills would rise 47%. I could sense their misery and see the anxiety and fear in their faces as to where their additional funds would come from.
Why, would you want to hurt someone by spreading falsehoods? There is no excuse to cause mental anguish to our citizens. Be honest, tell the truth of what actually is going on Peshtigo. I would like to encourage anyone who has a question or hears something that is upsetting them to call city hall, stop in or send an email. The city hall staff is more than happy to assist you in addressing your concerns. If they don't know the answer they will help find it for you. The phone number to city hall is 715-582-3041.
I wanted to provide some information that may hopefully put people at rest about their water bills. On January 1, 2021, sewer charges, not water charges went up to $4.19 per 1,000 gallons. Water volume usage and the base rate stayed the same. Fire protection stayed the same. I am currently working on an article that will show how the city, decades ago, ran in the red and did not raise rates to meet expenses, we are now, unfortunately, paying for some of the past decisions not to raise rates.
I hope this information offers some comfort to those who were mislead by the many falsehoods out there. Moving forward, let's work together to make our city second to none.
Cathi Malke, Mayor
Dear Editor:
Our world is helping Ukraine as Ukraine is helping us define our new shared democracy as we stand up to the bullies and their supporters; share with those "in need'; stop those who speak dangerous nonsense (conspiracy theories) that confuses us; find our circle of friends' and support them as they support us; defend the future of our children and seniors.
We can do this while assisting new democracies in resisting brutal autocracies such as Russia (formerly U.S.S.R. or Soviet Union). Russia has been invading, annexing and insurrecting nations since 1938 when, as the U.S.S.R., they invaded Poland with Nazi approval. Now Poland is sheltering Ukrainian refugees.
Take a trip with me back to 1938 when the Nazi invasion of Europe was continuing and the Soviet Union had joined them by invading Poland. The Soviet Union was an apt pupil. Notice as we move forward in time to 1940 when the Soviet Union invaded Finland, Norway, Netherlands, Belgium, France, and annexed Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. This ended when the Nazis attacked the Soviet Union and failed in the winter of 1941. That year Pearl harbor was bombed and the Soviet Union joined England and America to form the Allies and defeated the Nazi expansion in Europe. The Soviet Union began interfering in Korea in 1950, Hungary in 1956, Cuba in 1961, Czechoslovakia in 1968, Afghanistan in 1979, and in 2012 sponsored chemical weapons use in Syria. Pause for a moment in 2016 when Russian interference in our American presidential election caused a "corruption' that resulted in an attack on our capital in 2021 which almost stopped the confirmation of our current president and is still twisting our democracy out of shape today. The U.S.S.R.-Soviet Union-Russia has been confusing and harassing us since 1938.
In 2022 Putin is bombing Ukrainian children, pregnant women, and grandparents with artillery and aerial weapons. He is insisting that the world stand back and let his military brutalize non-combatants into submission as Russia has done for 84 years. The Russian expansionist game plan hasn't changed during the last century while the world has evolved towards humanistic democracy.
Our world has resisted this invasion of Ukraine with gifts of money, humanitarian supplies, military equipment and intelligence. We are initiating war crimes investigations and will expose all who have committed crimes against humanity. Most importantly other autocracies are seeing that our world will stand up to these humanitarian crimes with sanctions and exclusion from the world economic market.
Our world is evolving towards a future where brutal expansionism by greedy autocrats doesn't exist except in history books, where our children can learn and never forget the price and profit of democracy shared by all.

"Easter in Brief"
What an awful, dreadful, Fearful Day,
Our Lord was crucified.
But
What a wondrous, glorious, Easter morn,
When His tomb was open wide.
For
Because he died and arose again,
We
Too shall arise like Him.
Our
Bodies changed forever,
Free from sickness, pain and sin.
So
If you ask this precious Lord,
To come and dwell within,
You'll
Find such perfect quiet peace,
And spend eternity with Him

"Happy Easter"
This Sunday is Easter
What a glorious thrill
The resurrection of Our Savior
Who died on Calvary's Hill.
He's no longer dead,
He's the Savior of Man.
Because He arose,
We too shall rise again.
So if you want this Savior
And eternal life today,
Just open up your hearts door,
He's the Life, the Truth, the Way.
"Not Only at Easter"
Not only at Easter
But all the year through,
May Christ's Resurrection
Encourage and bless you.
For because He arose,
We also shall rise,
To meet Him in glory,
Someday in the skies.
