Dennis Chartier

Issue Date: April 27, 2022

Dennis (Sam) Chartier, 88, passed away Tuesday, April 19, 2022, surrounded by family.

Born Sept. 3, 1933, at his parents' home in Niagara, where he lived since, except for the time serving in the United States Army. After service, he married the love of his life, Lois Hallgren, on Aug. 23, 1958 and his happiest times were were spent with his wife, three kids, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He loved people and people were drawn to him. He enjoyed meeting new people and catching up with old friends. His love for people and his community was evident in his 32 years as the Director of The City of Niagara Park and Recreation program, 50 years of service in the Niagara Volunteer Fire Department, many years of service on the Red Cross Disaster Relief Team and as a bell ringer for the Salvation Army.

Very proud of his 43 year career at the Niagara Mill, he even continued as a tour guide after retiring. He also served on the Niagara Bank Board of Directors for over 20 years.

An avid sports fan, he watched many Packer and Cub games throughout the years. He also enjoyed playing football, softball, ski jumping and baseball. His passion for sports led him to establish the Niagara Youth Flag Football League, which was later renamed in his honor. Together they loved to travel, enjoying many trips with his wife and good friends, he still liked fishing and staying at his cottage on Sand Lake the most.

Survivors include his wife, Lois; a brother, Richard (Elly) Chartier and a brother-in-law, Jim (Anne) Hallgren, all of Niagara; a sister-in-law, Rita Parrotta of Gladstone; three children, Dan (Julie) Chartier of Niagara, Sheryl (Kelly) Curran of Greenville and Jim (Monica) Chartier of Iron Mountain, Mi.; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and many beloved nieces; nephews and cousins.

Along with his parents, James and Mary Chartier, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene Chartier and Jim Chartier; two sisters-in-law, Mabel Chartier and Vern Chartier and two brothers-in-law, Wayne Hallgren and John Parotta.

Visitation will be held at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain, Mi. on Saturday, April 30 from 9:30 a.m. until time of the funeral service at 11:30 a.m., with Rev. Paul Strom officiating. Burial will be in the Niagara Cemetery. Jacobs Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Niagara Chapel is assisting the family. Condolences and tributes can be made online at www.jacobsfuneralhomes.com
