Oconto Locks Up Packerland Championship

Softball

The Oconto Blue Devils softball squad claimed the Packerland softball conference championship Tuesday night when they defeated the Southern Door Eagles in game one of a double header 10-4. Oconto did drop the second match 5-12 but had already secured the championship.

Both team started with a strong opening game push as the score was knotted up at 3-3 after one frame.

The Eagles posted one run in the fourth before the Blue Devils crossed the plate with four runners in the bottom of the fourth.

Another three runs by Oconto in the sixth was plenty to end the game with the win.

Oconto's A. Schleuter posted the win in game one by allowing eight hits, four runs (two earned) and three walks. She struck out one in her seven innings.

The Oconto Blue Devils touched up Bethany Ahrens for five runs in the sixth inning to secure a massive 5-0 Packerland Conference win and hand Peshtigo its first loss of the season on Friday.

The teams were knotted at zero entering the bottom of the sixth, when Oconto exploded for all five of its runs.

With one out, Juliana Sieber singled on a ground ball to third. After a walk, Maggie Sohrweide reached on a bunt single, with Sieber scoring on the throw.

McKenna Seidl hit a sacrifice fly, and Lauren McDowell doubled home two to make it 4-0. Hannah Thomson doubled to left to score McDowell to give the Blue Devils a lead.

Annika Schleuter shut things down in the seventh as she did all game as Oconto held on.

Schleuter threw seven scoreless innings. She allowed seven hits and two walks, but the only time a runner advanced past second was in the sixth. She struck out four.

As she usually is, Ahrens was nearly untouchable until that sixth inning. Four of Oconto's six hits and both of the team's walks came in the sixth frame. She had 10 strikeouts.

Sohrweide was 2-3 with a run and an RBI and McDowell was 2-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Peshtigo's Allison Peters reached base four times, going 3-3 with a walk and a double, and Akira Smalls was 2-3, but the Bulldogs couldn't string together enough hits to bring any runs across.

in Shutout Win

Over Coleman

Peshtigo stacked up the runs early in a 15-0 win over Coleman on Monday.

The Bulldogs pounced on Courtney Den Ruyter in the first inning, scoring nine runs.

On the other side, Bethany Ahrens was untouchable. She threw a perfect five innings, striking out 12 without allowing a baserunner.

Sydney Lund hit an inside-the-park home run for Peshtigo on a 1-3 day. She had two RBIs and two runs scored.

Sam Kodric scored three runs and had an RBI. She was 1-3. Allison Peters was 3-4 with a double, two runs scored and two batted in. Rylie Ellie and Sam LaCoursiere each scored twice.



Badgers Bury

Patriots 19-4

Niagara piled up the runs in a 19-4 win over Goodman-Pembine on Monday.

Niagara had nine hits in the game, with seven from the top four hitters in the order. Four walks, six hit batters, and five Patriot errors helped push the 19 runs across.

Abigail Richtig went 3-3 with four runs scored and an RBI, Lillian Loukus was 2-4 with three runs and four RBIs, and Abby Wells was 2-4 with three runs scored.

Malory Sanicki went 1-4 with two runs scored and Beau Anderson was 1-3 with two RBIs. Josie Learned, Emma Broullire, and Aiva Champeau each scored twice.

Wells got the win in the circle, throwing all four innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on one hit.

For G-P, Rebekah Strietzel had two RBIs. She was the losing pitcher, though just six of the 19 runs were earned.



Blue Devils Sweep

Algoma in DH

Oconto won a pair of one-run ball games over Algoma on Thursday, 1-0 and 6-5.

In game one, the conference game, Oconto's Juliana Sieber homered to left to lead off the first inning. It was the only run either team would score, as both pitchers were dealing.

After the home run, Algoma pitcher Rylee Fenendal would lock in and go on to strike out the next four batters. She finished with 11 strikeouts in the game. Oconto had four hits and no walks off Fenendal.

Annika Schleuter was every bit as good, striking out seven over seven innings and allowing four hits. She also did not walk a batter, and she needed just 74 pitches to get through seven scoreless frames.

After being shut out in game one, Algoma's offense came out hot in the second game. The Wolves scored four runs in the top of the first and one in the top of the second to take a 5-0 lead early.

The game started with an error, so four of the five runs were unearned on Oconto pitcher Sophie Moody's statline. She allowed seven hits and four walks in three innings of work. Addisyn Viestenz finished off the game with two scoreless frames.

Trailing 5-0, Oconto started to chip away almost immediately. Two two-out singles by Moody and McDowell and an RBI single to center by Savannah Brill got Oconto on the board in the second.

In the third, Kadynn Bostwick singled home Alyse Viestenz, and Moody scored on a passed ball in the fourth.

With the teams playing just five innings in the non-conference tilt, the Blue Devils needed two to tie it in the bottom of the fifth.

After a flyout started the inning, Maggie Sohrweide singled to center to start things off. Bostwick was hit by a pitch and Seidl walked to load the bases.

Sohrweide brought Oconto to within a run after scoring on a passed ball, which also brought the other two runners into scoring position. McDowell brought them both home on a single to right to walk it off for the Blue Devils.

Bostwick was 2-2 with a run and an RBI and McDowell was 2-3 with a run and two RBIs.



Cougars Take Two

From STAA in DH

Coleman beat Saint Thomas Aquinas Academy in a doubleheader on Thursday by a combined 37-5 score.

Game one ended 20-3, while game two wrapped up at 17-2.

In game one, Coleman scored nine over the first two innings combined, then added seven in the fourth and four in the fifth. The Cougars had 22 hits to STAA's two.

Four Cougars had three-hit games and one had a four-hit night. Annabelle Markiewicz was 4-5 with two runs scored and three batted in.

Courtney Den Ruyter was 3-4 with three RBIs and four runs, Christina Ermis was 3-4 with four runs and three RBIs, Cameron Zeitler went 3-5 with two runs and four RBIs, and Paige Fischer was 3-4 with two runs and an RBI.

Alyssa Hoida was 2-5 with two runs and an RBI, Chloe Halford went 2-3 with two runs and an RBI, and Ava Podoski went 1-2 with two runs and an RBI. Chloe Dufeck was 1-4 with an RBI.

Den Ruyter got the win. She allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits and seven walks. She struck out nine.

For STAA, Chaela Rabas was 1-2 with two runs scored. Lily Neta took the loss in the circle.

Game two ended in three innings, with Coleman scoring eight in the first, five in the second, and four in the third.

The Cougars had 13 hits. Halford went 3-3 with three runs and three RBIs, Den Ruyter was 2-2 with two runs and three RBIs, Christina Ermis was 2-3 with two runs and two batted in, and Hoida was 2-2 with a run and three RBIs.

Fischer was 1-3 with two runs, Zeitler went 1-2 with two runs, and Markiewicz was 1-1 with two runs. Hailey Ermis scored twice and Podoski scored once.

Dufeck got the win, allowing two runs on four hits. She struck out four over the course of three innings.

For STAA, Rabas was 1-2 with a run and Rose Krammer was 1-2 with two RBIs. Bree Ruech took the loss.



Errors Sink Wolverines

in Loss to Badgers

Niagara took advantage of nine Crivitz errors to pick up a 13-3 win on Friday.

The Badgers had just three hits, but seven walks, five hit batters, and the nine errors were enough to propel the Badgers to a win. They scored four in the first, two in the third, and seven in the sixth.

Abby Wells was the winning pitcher, striking out 11 and allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks.

Rachel Walker went 1-3 with a run scored and three batted in. Aiva Champeau, Abigail Richtig, Emma Broullire, and Mallory Sanicki scored two runs apiece on no hits between them.

On the Crivitz, side, Nilea Guns was 2-3 with two runs scored and Raegan Nelsen was 1-2 with a home run and two RBIs.

Isabelle Danielczak took the loss for 5.2 innings of work. Of her 13 runs allowed, just two were earned. She struck out nine.



Marines Come Up

Just Short Against State

Ranked Irish

Marinette went toe-to-toe with one of the top-ranked teams in the state on Friday and came up just short in a pair of games.

Freedom is ranked second in Division 2 in the latest state coaches poll.

Freedom ended up winning the games 5-2 and 4-0. Naleyah Bork and Peyton VandeLoo each threw seven innings to stifle the Marine bats.

In game one, it was Bork as Marinette fell 5-2. Freedom got on the board first, with their two top hitters singling before a sacrifice fly. The game sat at 1-0, with Marinette's Wynn Erdman also putting on a strong performance.

The Marines struggled with strikeouts against the Irish pitching tandem. In game one, Bork struck out 13 batters, including striking out the side in innings four and five.

Marinette got some offense going in the seventh, trailing 5-0. After Cienna Grawey reached, Peyton Berman slugged a two-run home run to cut the deficit to 5-2.

Bork settled down after the long ball, striking out the next batter before groundouts to first and third.

Three of Erdman's five runs allowed were earned. She struck out three in seven innings. She was back in the circle for game two.

The two teams were knotted at zero for the first three innings, with Erdman and VandeLoo both keeping their opponents off the bases.

VandeLoo was dealing throughout the entire game. She allowed just one baserunner, the leadoff hitter in the second, in the first four innings.

She finally got some run support in the sixth, with three hits and an error producing three runs and giving the Irish a 4-0 lead.

Marinette loaded the bases in the seventh, but alternating with successful at-bats were strikeouts. VandeLoo struck out 16 batters in the game, never allowing Marinette to really get anything started.

Jada Diaz was one player to have a hit in that seventh inning. She finished the game 2-3.

Erdman was battling an illness all week, but she still put in a solid 13-inning shift in the circle for Marinette.

"Wynn's been sick all week, so I didn't even know if she was going to be here. It's hard to come and pitch a two-game gem," Marinette coach Scott Mcintyre said.

Ultimately, Marinette was just a couple of plays short.

"They're ranked number one in the state for a reason. When they put baserunners on, they just put pressure on us. It was an all-around fun night," Mcintyre said. "We didn't have many hits, but our defense, when the ball was hit, we made some plays. It's the situations that we got ourselves in some trouble in the first game."

He won't have much to complain about from his team's performance.

"All in all, I told the girls I don't necessarily believe in moral victories, but that's two moral victories tonight," Mcintyre said. "We want to be a different team in May, and we're taking those steps in the right direction."



Marines Take Shutout

Win Over Mustangs

Marinette shut out Little Chute 12-0 in five innings on Monday night.

The Marines scored six in the second inning. Kylie Sauve provided the biggest hit of the inning, with a three-RBI single from the nine spot in the order that scored Jada Diaz, Shayla Diaz, and Savannah Boivin. Sauve would also come around to score, as would Kaya Bodam and Allison Kacalo.

The Marines put six more on the board in the third, with Boivin contributing a big two-RBI single and Jada Diaz singling home one as well. Both players would also score runs in the frame. Shayla Diaz slapped a hit to score two in the inning as well.

Cienna Grawey went 2-4 with a run scored and a double, Peyton Berman was 3-4 with a run scored and an RBI, Sauve was 1-1 with three RBIs and a run, Shayla Diaz was 2-3 with a run and two RBIs, Jada Diaz was 2-3 with two runs and an RBI, and Boivin was 1-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Destiny Walker went 1-2 with a run and two RBIs.

Wynn Erdman got the win in the circle for Marinette. She struck out 11 batters.



Oconto Routs

Sturgeon Bay 16-1

Oconto stacked up the runs in a 16-1 win over Sturgeon Bay on Monday.

The Blue Devils had 13 hits and took advantage of 11 Clipper errors. Juliana Sieber was 3-4 with a double, three runs, and two RBIs. Kadynn Bostwick was 3-4 with a home run, three runs, and three RBIs.

McKenna Seidl was 2-4 with two runs and two RBIs, and Maggie Sohrweide went 2-3 with three runs and three RBIs. Lauren McDowell had a solo home run on a 1-4 day.

Annika Schleuter got the win. She struck out eight and allowed one run on five hits and one walk.



Schlies and Schaal

Both Hit Inside the

Park Home Runs

in Win Over Crivitz

Wausaukee beat Crivitz 14-4 on Monday behind two inside-the-park home runs.

Rachel Schlies and Melody Schaal both had inside-the-parkers. Schaal scored three runs on a 2-3 day, adding three RBIs, while Schlies was 3-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs.

Lydia Schaal was 1-3 with a run and two RBIs on a double in the second inning.

Wausaukee scored four runs in the first inning and six in the second. The Rangers added two in both the third and the fourth.

Schlies was also the winning pitcher, striking out six batters and allowing four runs (three earned) on one hit and seven walks.

For Crivitz, Megan Pusick took the loss, allowing 14 runs (eight earned) on 10 hits and two walks. She struck out two.

Conference Play

Peshtigo swept a pair against Oconto Falls in a softball doubleheader on Monday.

The Bulldogs won game one 12-1 and took game two by a 7-4 score.

In game one, Peshtigo got on the board in the third when Emma Gilligan singled and scored. She would go 3-4 with an RBI and two runs in the game.

Allison Peters was 3=5 with three runs and an RBI and Rylie Ellie went 3-4 with two runs scored and two batted in. Bethany Ahrens and Tori Jandt were each 2-4 with a run scored.

Ahrens was Peshtigo's starting pitcher, going seven innings and striking out 12. She allowed one run on four hits.

Peters pitched game two, picking up the win for seven innings of four-run softball. She struck out seven and walked seven. At the plate, she was 2-4 with a run scored.

Ahrens went 2-3 with two runs scored, Jandt was 2-3 with a run and an RBI, and Sydney Lund was 2-4 with a run scored and two RBIs.
