Marines Claim NEC and D2 Regional TitlesIssue Date: May 26, 2022 Marines Win
NEC Conference
Championship
Marinette's golf dynasty continues. The Marines locked up a third straight North Eastern Conference title at Brown County Country Club last Wednesday.
The Marines shot a 331 to win the conference championship meet, beating every team by 15 or more strokes. The Marines lost just one conference match this season, a Wrightstown win in Denmark on May 16 where the Marines shot a 349.
The Marines were not to be denied at the conference meet, with Trey Kretz shooting a 78, tied for medalist with Wrightstown's Grant Delsart.
Kelten Hermanson also broke 80, shooting a 79. Keegan Polomis and Brady Eastman recorded 86 and 88 strokes, respectively, and Owen Hansen's 96 was dropped.
Marinette coach Pete Kretz said his team shot about as well as he expected.
"Kelten and Trey held up and shot in the 70s, which really gave us the fortification to make it happen today and hold off Wrightstown," coach Kretz said. "Keegan and Brady held their own, and it's what we've been doing all year, so it's pretty solid."
Trey Kretz earned conference player of the year honors. It was his third season playing full-time at the varsity level and third conference championship.
"I'm ecstatic. I'm proud of my team and everything they've done - every single one of them," he said. "I'm playing good. I need some fine-tuning on some things, but it's getting better. I feel like I can go lower, of course, but I feel like I'm at a good spot."
Kretz, Hermanson, and Polomis are all seniors on the team. All three made the NEC first team. Eastman was a second-teamer as a freshman.
"It's just been fun with this group of guys. I've grown up with Trey and Kelten, playing every day, and seeing it come to fruition is great to see," Polomis said. "We didn't play as well as we wanted to all year, but we're ending on a high note going into the postseason."
So, is it fair to call the Marinette boys golf team a local golf dynasty?
蔴 percent, we started something. I feel that we carried on something that players before us had going," Hermanson said.
Oconto Falls ended the season on a high note as well, taking third of nine teams with a 356. The Panthers were fourth for the cumulative season total.
The highlight of the Panthers' day was Rease Hodkiewicz, who shot an 82, which included a hole-in-one on the seventh hole. It was his best round of the season.
"It's a nice end to the season. It's always good when kids play well, but it's always good to see growth and development, and just positive memories for the kids and the team in general," Falls coach Scott Schroeder said. "Everybody kind of gets to celebrate when others do well and that's what we look for in a team in any sport, especially when you're in sports where you're as close as a golf team."
Beyond Hodkiewicz, four Panthers shot in the 90s. Kadyn Riel shot a 90, Thomas Carmody and Caden Leonhardt each shot 92s, and Trevor Metzler scored a 94.
Hodkiewicz was an NEC honorable mention and Riel made the NEC second team.
"We've had our ups and downs as far as the season goes, as far as players taking turns playing better, which is kind of nice. There's a friendly competition in the group of five, and it's nice to have five golfers that are all contributing to our scores at the end," Schroeder said. "We'd like to be peaking going into regionals and then sectionals. Just the accumulation of the positive energy at the end of the year moving to next year and so on."
Marinette and Oconto Falls will be joined by Peshtigo at the Clintonville regional at Riverside. Marinette will host the sectional at Riverside.
Despite their strong season and high postseason hopes, the Marines won't go into regionals too high or too low.
"They realize that they can get beat, which is good. They have to stay focused and it can happen anytime. That's the way golf is," coach Kretz said. "Some days, the ball hits a tree and goes on the green, other days it hits it and goes in the water. It's real simple."
Marinette Wins
Regional Title;
Peshtigo's Bauman
is Medalist
Marinette, Peshtigo, and Oconto Falls all clinched sectional qualification in Clintonville on Monday.
Playing at Riverside Golf Course, Marinette won the regional with a 326 score.
Peshtigo was second with a 350, two strokes ahead of Mosinee and four in front of Oconto Falls. The Panthers carded a 354, seven strokes better than Wittenberg-Birnamwood, the first team on the outside looking in.
Marinette seniors Keegan Polomis and Trey Kretz each shot 79s and tied for fourth in the field.
"The two seniors knew that they just needed to play their game and not let the pressure of postseason play get to them," Marinette coach Pete Kretz said.
Freshman Brady Eastman and senior Kelten Hermanson tied for eighth with 84s. Owen Hansen carded a 96, 28th of 51 in the field.
"The team played well today. Nothing really special but a consistent performance from a team that defended its regional championship," coach Kretz said.
Marinette hosts next week's sectional at Riverside Golf Club.
Peshtigo's Grant Bauman shot a medalist round of 72, just one stroke above par and six strokes better than any other golfer on the day.
Bauman started off with bogeys on three of his first four holes, but he bounced back and played the final 14 holes at two-under par.
"It's common to have difficult stretches during a round, but he never lets it get away from him," Peshtigo coach Jim Dufrane said. "He shows great discipline and that is what makes him so consistent."
Logan Smith was 17th with an 88, Christian Boyle tied for 23rd with a 93, Alex Raygo carded a 97 and tied for 30th, and Travis Lund's 100 was dropped. He was 32nd.
"We are very excited as a team to be moving on to the sectional round next week," Dufrane said. "Everyone contributed in their own way, and it truly was a team effort to finish second in this Regional tournament."
For Oconto Falls, Kadyn Riel tied for 10th with an 85 in the freshman's first career postseason contest.
Rease Hodkiewicz carded an 87 and tied for 16th, Trevor Metzler tied for 18th at 90, Caden Leonhardt recorded a 92 to tie for 22nd, and Thomas Carmody was 30th with a 97.
Coleman/Crivitz
Advance To
D3 Sectionals
Coleman and Crivitz are headed to sectionals from Tuesday's Division 3 regional.
Playing at Lakewood's McCauslin Brook, the Cougars were third and Crivitz was fourth, with teams needing a fourth-place finish to secure sectional qualification.
Coleman shot a 379 as a team. Karson Casper was fourth in the field of 41 golfers after shooting an 84. Liam Zeitler carded a 94 to take ninth, Kamron Kostrova tied for 10th with a 97, and Lincoln Henry finished with a 104 to take 18th.
Crivitz recorded a 389 team score to join Coleman, Crandon, and first-place Wabeno/Laona at sectionals.
Kaden Klaver was eighth with a 91, Jack Bauer tied for 10th at 97, Joey Pickett was 15th with a 100, and TJ Mueller shot a 101 to tie for 16th. Jake Kosmecki tied for 21st with 108.
Pembine/Goodman was sixth with a 546, bringing the Patriots' season to an end. Josh Knutson shot a 118, Chase Kozellek carded a 129, senior Erik Kalkofen's high school career ended with a 135, and Josh Wysocki shot 164.
Florence and Niagara didn't have full team scores, with less than four golfers each. Niagara's Nate Olsen shot a 109 and tied for 23rd. Florence senior Dom Axley was 29th with a 112 and Gavin Holdaway took 30th with a 114.
Oconto/Lena Advance
Teams to Sectionals,
STAA's Bailey Moves On
Oconto and Lena are headed to sectionals after finishing in the top four of eight teams at the Iola-Scandinavia regional on Monday.
The Blue Devils were second with a team score of 384, 17 strokes back from first-place Bonduel and 20 strokes ahead of third place Lena.
Christian Koch was seventh with a 91 and Josh Maynard tied for ninth with 96 strokes. Drew Reinhardt was 12th at 89, and Carter Koch shot a 99, tying for 13th. David Westenberg carded a 109 and tied for 25th.
Lena took third with a 404. Iola-Scandinavia was fourth with a 411, and the first team out was Oneida Nation with a 440.
For the Wildcats, Braden McVane's eighth-place 95 led the way, followed by 96 from Drake Dionne, 100 by Mason Simonson for 15th, a 113 for Evan VanderZanden to put him 28th, and K.C. Miller's 117, good for 30th.
Saint Thomas Aquinas Academy came up short as a team, shooting a 485, but Kaden Bailey qualified as an individual, taking second of 46 golfers in the field with a 79. Bonduel's Cooper Uelmen's 77 was the only score better.
Theron Thayer tied for 20th with a 105, Tayen Schwartz was 38th with a 130, and Matthew Mushynski shot a 171.
